I called urgent care first and they explained that based on the severity of the illness and the need for IV fluids I would have to go to an ER. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and Mercy Hospital is in my network. I have a$1000 ER copay which I paid in full by credit card at time of service. The Level of care was pretty good. The nurses and doctors were all very nice. The number of ER patients that arrived in the back of police cars and in handcuffs while I was there was a little scary, but what can you do. I realize I wasn't a medical priority since it was just dehydration. During the 6 hours there I received 2 IV bags of fluid, they drew blood and took a urine and stool sample. Standard care. So I received my fluids began to feel a little better, discharged and sent on my way. Within a few more days I was able to return to work. Overall the treatment was good and I was satisfied. Then the real nightmare began. About 6 weeks after service I received a bill from Mercy. It was a very generic bill which was not itemized. It didn't even show if my $1000 copay was applied. I was shocked to see that the total cost of services was $7313!!!! It stated my insurance paid them $3741 and that I still owed them over $2500. I made a call and found out this is what I owed even after the $1000 copay Was applies. I knew there had to be a mistake. I called Mercy and asked for an itemized bill. I explained there was no way the cost could have been over $7000. They were rude and defensive when I asked and the itemized bill didn't show up. It took 2 additional calls and almost a month to finally receive the itemized bill. Only after I told them I filed a fraud claim with BCBSIL for not receiving an itemized bill did I receive the itemized bill. Upon reviewing the bill I found a typo. A major typo. Each IV was listed as a seperate line item. B/c I had 2 IVs that day the quantity for each should have been listed as one. The 2nd IV listed on the bill had a 0 behind the 1 under quantity which in turn was showing I received 10 IVs to the tune of $446 a piece. Therefore, I was charged for 9 IVs I never received and was being billed $4014 for them. I called Mercy immediately. The billing agent recognized and acknowledged the mistake and confirmed it with a supervisor after putting me on a brief hold. Ok, just issue me a new corrected bill and we're all good right? NOPE! I was told in order for Mercy to correct their mistake which could ultimately negatively impact my finances and credit that I had to write them a letter of dispute and.......wait for it......FAX it to them. Yes! Fax! The cutting edge form of document transmission from 1989. Unbelievable in 2018. So I typed up my letter, printed it out, got in my time machine and headed to a local UPS store with a fax machine and attempted to fax out the letter of dispute. After 4 attempts, the line just rang and rang with no answer. I jumped back into my time machine and headed to Fedex Office (or should I say Kinkos since that was all the rage when we were still faxing in the last century?). Multiple attempts were made again. I called Mercy to confirm the number. I had it correct. They told me they are just busy receiving a lot of dispute letters (shocking? No!) and that I need to just keep trying. I asked if there was any other option, if I could even drop it at the billing office in person. I was told no. I was also told I could not be transferred to a supervisor. Only faxing was allowed. I don't have time to sit at a location with a fax machine to try again and again to fax them a dispute to a mistake they made for over $4000!!! This place is scamming people. I have filed another fraud claim with my insurance company and I have begun a claim with the Illinois Attorney General's Health Bureau for medical billing fraud. If you have no choice but to go to Mercy for Emergency care don't pay them a dime until they send you an itemized bill and you can confirm it is correct. I suspect they are pulling this scam on a lot of people and insurance companies. These are the people to blame for rising medical and health insurance costs!!!!

I was on my way to a gig when my sister called, frantic our other sister, who was visiting for the weekend, had suddenly fallen ill and was taken to Mercy Hospital. I dropped everything and headed there right away. When I arrived, there was confusion about visitors, and my sister was asked to leave so they could treat our patient. When I was finally allowed back, I was alarmed by what I saw: my sister was unconscious, foaming at the mouth, and lying on her back with no doctor or nurse in the room. I immediately turned her on her side so she wouldn't choke. After waiting about 10 minutes with no staff checking in, I went to find help. Nurses in the area couldn't tell me who was assigned to her, and I was given paper towels to manage her condition myself. After about 30 more minutes, I finally found a nurse at the desk who said she was assigned to my sister. When I asked why no one had come to check on her, I was told my sister had been "extra drunk," combative, and had spit on staff so they essentially left her there. Despite this, she had still not received fluids or proper care. The nurse also mentioned her shift was ending soon and that someone else would take over. However, another hour and a half passed with no one checking on my sister. Eventually, a doctor briefly stopped by and said she would wake up in a few hours pending toxicology. When my sister finally regained consciousness, she was disoriented, confused, and not behaving normally. It took multiple attempts just to get assistance for something as basic as helping her to the restroom. At that point, it had been over four hours with little to no care. We requested a toxicology report, especially since her symptoms suggested she may have been drugged. Although blood had apparently been drawn (there were even remnants left in the room), we never received any results. The room itself was also concerning there were gnats and visible lack of cleanliness. When a new nurse came on shift, the attitude was dismissive. We were told we could leave, even though my sister clearly wasn't stable. When asked to collect a urine sample, the nurse refused to assist and said it was only being done to "satisfy" us. We complied anyway, but to this day, we have not received any follow-up or results. This was one of the most neglectful medical experiences I've ever witnessed. My sister could have choked on her own vomit. Over the 4-5 hours we were there, I don't believe her assigned nurse ever once checked on her in the room. Thankfully, we were there to advocate for her but that shouldn't be necessary for someone to receive basic care. I'm sharing this because no family should have to go through something like this. I truly hope Mercy Hospital takes steps to improve patient care and accountability so this doesn't happen to someone else.

Make sure you get your parking validated. -"Sky Lobby" (waiting room on 7th floor) has a nice view, but prepare to be ignored by the rude and lazy desk staff. Also be warned that it's hot and stuffy. Everywhere. -Pharmacy: Everyone at this place calls it "DCAM". Helpful to know ahead of time. Note* You will more than likely be going back & forth to this pharmacy multiple times to wait in line because their staff & doctors do not communicate well. It's down on the 1st floor; a long a trek from the super slow elevators banks behind a stairwell in the noisy lobby where sometimes there's a person playing music and it echoes terribly. - Picking up a patient from surgery is confusing. Getting from the parking lot to the pick up spot which is tight lane of gridlocked drivers. Hard to see any street signs so unless you know the name of every building on the campus have fun. The Center for Care and Discovery (hospital) is a headache. Good luck.

UChicago receptionists routinely lie to the patients, (something like UChicago needs it to bill your insurance or for privacy). If you request a copy of what you are about to sign, you will see that it is 17 pages of legal contract allowing them to charge you, process bills for collections, including legal fees, and distribute your personal confidential information to just about anyone you can imagine (without any limitations). I find it difficult to imagine the government or American Medical Association allow doctors and hospitals to coerce patients needing care. No wonder it is so easy for criminals to steal someone's identity.

Very rude people in emergency, clearly they were expecting trouble makers and treated everyone as if they were one. Waited for hours, the temporary splint was put incorrectly and finally we got to go home. The real "fun" began after that. They misspelled our address so even though we paid the copay and our insurance company paid 90% of the bill, they could not send us any bills because of the wrong address. Two months after, I started getting calls from debt collection agencies ! Not one phone call from the hospital - just straight to collection. When I called the hospital, they said that many different "departments" bill the patient separately and there is no way for them know which those departments are. They rattled off some "possible" numbers and I started calling physicians group, radiology group, emergency group, hospital administration billing and so on. Some numbers worked other simple were wrong. Some said they stopped serving Mercy and its some other group. This went on for 2 more weeks where I paid bills ranging from $24 to $300. Finally, I got the last phone number through the internet and hopefully have paid all of them. In the meantime, in every conversation with the hospital Admin, they kept claiming ignorance or gave wrong information. I think they assume the majority of the clients they serve in that area do not pay their bills so they assume everyone is mooching off them. Bottom line - Do NOT go to this hospital - even (especially) if your life depended on it. If they don't screw up the treatment, they will certainly kill you with their billing and administrative chaos.
