Dr. Fronza consulted with me to perform a surgical procedure for an issue that he was not familiar with. Not only were the treatment alternatives scary to me but the fact that he had never treated a case like mine made it even more so. I found Cindy to be rude and abrupt. Most of my interactions with her felt like I was unwelcome to ask questions or learn additional information necessary for the successful conclusion of my treatment. Cindy directed me to email Dr. Fronza with my questions. I faced a stressful week between my scheduled consultation to my scheduled surgery. My questions most of the time were answered briefly. I ended up canceling surgery with Dr. Fronza. I felt that It is critical that anyone facing any surgical procedure have complete confidence in their surgeon. With my surgical date getting closer I decided to seek a second opinion. I found several doctors familiar with cases like mine in another state. I went to consult with a surgical specialist. While their treatment alternatives were similar to Dr. Fronza they were very conservative In their approach. Today I can tell you that my surgery was successful but I chose to have it done by a surgeon very familiar with cases like mine. If you need surgery and your doctor refers you to Dr. Kyle Mueller... find someone else. Sure, when you meet him at your consult he'll come off as cool and reassuring. He'll make you feel at ease, telling you anytime you have questions don't hesitate to call. When you're nervous the morning of the surgery, he will once again be reassuring, and remind you that if I have any questions I can call him anytime. Dr. Mueller is full of crap. Once you're wheeled into the OR and you're put under, that is the last you will see of him. After my surgery, I called Dr. Mueller with 3 separate concerns within 48 hours of my surgery. Two of them I'd say were pretty serious. He never called me back the first time, and even his office manager (Connie, who is wonderful), was like, what the hell. She got another doctor in the practice to answer question #2 for me. I did get a call from Dr. Mueller about an hour after that, which I didn't answer b/c I was sleeping. All his voicemail said was that, "I heard you talked to my colleague" and regurgitated the same thing the other doctor had told me, along with a "don't hesitate to call my answering service if you need anything else!" Right. Later that night the fever that I had been running since surgery got higher, so I called his service. The answering service tells you to call back in 30 minutes if you don't hear from your doc. His answering service paged him for me twice that night, and I never, ever heard back from him. (I called my regular doctor and she prescribed antiobiotics for me.) So, let's see... other issues aside, if you were a patient who is 48 hours post-surgery and you were running a high fever and you were terrified, wouldn't YOU want your surgeon to call you back? If you do, you may not want to hire Dr. Mueller in the first place. He clearly doesn't give a crap about his patients once you are wheeled out of his OR. The following Monday I called his office to basically fire him and get a copy of my records, and was able to get him on the phone. He then proceeded to treat me like I'M the idiot. "I didn't get your pages. Why would I ignore your calls?" Hmm, I don't know, YOU tell ME. Pretty scary that "one of the busiest surgeons at Northwestern" doesn't get his pages. In the meantime? FIRED. He did give me his cell phone number, so I guess I will admit he made an effort to make it right, but it was too late. The patient-doctor trust was broken. Thank god I ended up being ok, but what if I hadn't been? I'm glad I didn't have to find out. read more

I found Dr. Fronza by recommendation of my general practitioner. I was seeing another doctor in a different hospital, and was told I needed to have my spleen removed. Hoping to find another solution, I went to Dr. Fronza for a second opinion. After he reviewed my medical history and spoke with me about my concerns, he proposed a surgery that would get rid of my problems and save my spleen. He fought for me and what was best for my body, and made me feel at ease. Every time I saw him, he thoroughly answered all of my questions and was patient with me. I felt like we made decisions together, not like I was being told what would be done. I had surgery with Dr. Fronza in December 2016 (he was able to schedule surgery right away - a week out) and all went as planned. He was able to save my spleen and get me back to being 100% healthy. I never had to wait more than 5 minutes to see him, and scheduling new appointments with Cindy were very easy to do. read more

The scheduling is horrific. Repeated phone calls, with no one answering, and when someone answers, they say to call back. Finally found an online scheduling option, got approval, showed up and no one was there for Dr. Davila. See someone else, you might actually get to. read more

Dr. Fronza and Cindy are professional, friendly and wonderful to work with. Dr. Fronza and his students & residents are extremely skilled physicians (or soon to be). Each has a friendly and professional bedside manner. They were attuned to my needs and concerns. They dealt with each logically and with a deep knowledge base. I am so glad that I chose Dr. Fronza for my surgeon! I am blessed and beyond grateful! Of important note-- he performed a LARGE ventral hernia operation and partnered with another fabulous surgeon, Dr. Fine, who is a plastic surgeon. read more

Dr Stryker was the absolute best. He was able to identify my issue and recommended a resection. No reason for a 2nd Opinion because Dr. Stryker is "The Guy" for Gastrointestinal Issues. Excellent Bedside manner! He is a private physician which means he is out of network. When it comes to your health, you deserve the best! read more

I had a severe case of diverticulitis that needed surgery. I happen to be in the health field so I know quite a few people to ask their opinions on a surgeon. After speaking with both Dr. friends and nurses and one former student everyone and I mean everyone said Dr. Steven Stryker is your man. As it turned out this was a very good decision because my surgery was quite complicated not a normal run-of-the-mill Bowel resection surgery my bowel had blowing up so huge that all of the neighboring organs were fused to it fortunately with Dr. Stryker's many many years of experience and know how he was able to get me through this crisis with flying colors. My husband told me that after the surgery when he met with Dr. Stryker that he looked visibly shaken from the operation that's how complex it was but I am happy to report that I am now fine and thankful that we had Dr. Stryker. His bedside manner is fabulous such a nice guy Who really cares about his patients. Thank you Dr. Stryker read more

Zero stars!!! Run from this terrible surgical group! Many people, including me, have been seriously maimed by the careless, unethical practices of these surgeons. I had Dr Toyama, and boy does he suck! For an alleged 1.5 cm hernia, he put a 4"x6" piece of plastic mesh inside of me, without my consent, that is known to be "biologically incompatible with human tissue". After 4 incredibly painful and damaging months, I had to have a team of surgeons remove the mesh, and have an abdominal wall reconstruction surgery. So now, I have a 7" vertical, ugly scar in the middle of my stomach and I can't begin to say here, how much I've lost from trusting this absolute idiot. Please do yourself the biggest favor and do not use this group. If you do, well... you've had your warnings.. BEWARE! read more

I highly recommend Dr Fronza who is an amazing surgeon and human being. My GP picked him/ his independent practice to perform my ruptured appendix surgery (laparoscopic). Dr Fronza and the Northwestern Hospital team were very clear on what the surgery steps would be and made me feel very confident that I was in good hands. Pre and post surgery visits covered everything I needed to know and answered questions. My 3 scars are minimal. Dr Fronza is not only a great surgeon, he is also very human, approachable, responsive and excels at simplifying his explanations for patients to fully understand what is going on. I initially thought the world of Dr. Fronza, until I had complications after a large piece of Bard (bad!) mesh was put in me, and I started to bleed horribly internally. I had the surgery in the mid of March, 2016, and ended up spending the better half of 3 months in the hospital due to chronic internal bleeding. I have had a "Code Blue" called for me twice as I lost so much blood, other doctors and the great nurses that helped me were furious that this had happened to me, and all stated I should have been taken back into OR to find what/where the bleeding was coming from, but instead I had a drain placed in me after coming BACK to the hospital after my abdomen opened up at home and I had blood spraying all over my bathroom. To make a very long, painful story shorter, I requested this painful, harmful mesh be removed by Dr. Fronza, and all he said was NO. How can you be willing to put it in, know your patient was bleeding for months, in the hospital for such a long time, yet discard me as if I did something wrong?! It is near the end of Oct. 2018, and I am still bleeding out of my belly button. Something is wrong. I feel awful this has happened, I can't eat regular food any longer as I have a constant upset stomach since this mesh has been put in. I have come to find that this Bard mesh is some of the worst brands out there. I went from going out walking at our local nature preserve almost daily with my other half, to being 'recliner chair bound' as the pain is so bad around where the mesh is (Upper right quadrant) that I wish I had not had the surgery done at all. Then to be dismissed in the manner in which I was is terrible. Dr. Fronza wanted me to go see his buddy, another dr. who he said he was going to call that day. I'm not stupid; I know he told him if I called/came for an appt. to also tell me no to removal. Karma karma karma.... read more

Dr. Fronza is not only a gifted surgeon, but a kind doctor. I have had four abdominal surgeries within the past year at such prestigious institutions as Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins. Unfortunately, I had complications after each surgery, and in each case, the surgeon effectively dismissed my concerns. In each case, my concerns were correct in that I had recurring hernias. Hernias can be difficult to correct. I decided to contact Dr Fronza based on reviews I read online. I was very impressed at my first appointment. He not only extensively reviewed my prior records, but consulted with other doctors about my complicated case. This is quite rare. He spent a great deal of time answering my questions and I decided to schedule surgery. During my hospital stay, he came in daily to check on me. This is very rare. Often at teaching hospitals, a team of residents are the only individuals to see a patient. I was very impressed. He was very kind throughout. I have had questions and concerns since my surgery, and Dr Fronza has always returned calls and emails within hours! For someone who has dealt with numerous doctors and surgeons, I would place Dr Fronza at the top for his expertise and willingness to go above and beyond. I could go on and on, but, in essence, I am glad that I chose him as my surgeon. Oh...and the results of the surgery were fantastic! Oh, and his assistant, Cindy, is the best! She always returns calls and emails ASAP!! read more

Dr. Fronza and his colleagues in the office gave me the all around care that I needed to not only have a successful procedure, but a long term outcome that has changed my life. Saved my life as well. They treated my mind, body and soul. His personality helped make my fear less than it had been and we went over every part of what I could expect from the procedure before and afterwards. Dr. Fronza and I became "friends" unexpectedly in January. I say friends, because Dr. Fronza truly made me feel like he was one of my friends just helping me out. I ended up in the ER and needed emergency surgery and luckily Dr. F was my on-call surgeon. My situation was pretty serious and he was very forthcoming, sensitive and direct in delivering the strategy around my care. More importantly, he spoke to me like a human. Not everyone understands doctor speak! He was also super kind and caring with my dad, which is so key in dealing with these types of situations. Most of the time, the doctor just addresses the patient when they're an adult and leaves the family out of the discussion. This was certainly not the case with Dr. Fronza. My surgery went smoothly and my recovery was quick, considering the circumstances. I rave about my experience (albeit I wish I could've avoided it altogether!) with Dr. F and the team anytime it comes up. My follow-ups were smooth as well and anytime I have any questions for Dr. Fronza, he's quick to reply and help. In Chicago, everyone's "got a guy." If you need a surgical "guy", Dr. Fronza is him. read more

I've known Dr. Fronza for many years, but it was just a few months ago that he performed a laparoscopic RNY gastric bypass on me. Between Dr. Fronza and his assistant Cindy, I knew from day one that I was in good hands. I appreciated both of their precision to detail. Dr Steven Stryker came very highly recommended. He is a colon & rectal surgeon. He is very personable, friendly, does not rush if you have questions, is comprehensive with his explanations, runs on time and excels in his expertise. Dr. Fronza removed my 75 year old mother's gallbladder in 2014. He's a wonderful surgeon with a great bed side manner. Anytime I take her to any of her other appointments at Northwestern she always asks me "Isn't my surgeon, Dr. Fronza in this building"? I left 3 messages over the course of one week for Dr. Stryker's assistant to call me back and set an appointment. Nobody ever called back. I also am in a service business and wouldn't be for long if I did not return my clients' calls. And of course, there are plenty of good doctors out there. read more

Dr. Fronza was great for me. He saw me on a Friday and took out my gall bladder the following Wednesday. He even sent me a photo for my kids and called that night to check on me. He gave thoughtful, complete explanation and actually emailed me--wow, a doctor who emails his patients! He is a rock star in my book--and even even kept my belly button looking good. Dr. Jeffrey Fronza was my surgeon. And outside of the million dollar smile that he has he gave me exceptional care and has been very thorough with me throughout this entire process. Dr. Fronza is one of those few physicians who really listen to every concern I had before surgery. They had great follow up as the time approached to my surgery. He was right there in recovery and asked questions on how I was feeling and even took an extra step to give me a shot right out of surgery to avoid some pain I was having. He went even further and followed up with me after I was home and made sure to do a follow up in his office in a timely manner. He is a kind man who really cares about his patients and I have referred him to several other people I know. Dr. Fronza was amazing. I had a gastric bypass in 1999 in CA. In June of this year I had a complication that placed me in ER. Originally one of the Northwestern Bariatric doctors (not part of this group) reviewed my case and decided I was "ok" to be left alone on pain management meds. Not wanting to live on pain medicine I sought additional opinions (my original surgeon, Dr. Eli, and Dr. Fronza). All of them said my issue needed to be corrected and Dr. Fronza worked with Dr. Dumanian due to hernia mesh issues as well. After originally feeling like Id have to live in pain the rest of my life because no one wanted to touch someone else's work, I was thankful to find a compassionate surgeon who understood I wasn't a drug seeker and that I had a real issue. Dr. Fronza was forthcoming about the risks and did everything in his power to make me feel comfortable with the procedure. I would highly recommend him as a surgeon. read more

Meet the Business Owner: Jeffrey F.

Dr. Fronza grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and graduated from York Community High School. He then graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a BA in Literatures in English. He returned home to Chicago to attend medical school at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. During this time he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society. After completing a five year general surgery residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, Dr. Fronza pursued advanced training in gastrointestinal surgery. This was completed at Oregon Health & Science University under the mentorship of John G Hunter, MD, a pioneer in laparoscopic surgery. He acquired in-depth knowledge and technical expertise in the management of benign and malignant conditions of the foregut through minimally-invasive approaches. They went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and make sure my husband was comfortable. The pre-op rooms are nice and clean with recliner chairs (instead of hospital beds) which was a nice touch. They even give you warm blankets while you wait for the doctor. We've had such amazing customer service from the front desk staff, to the nurses to the doctors. I would highly recommended this place!

Even little St. Mary's in Janesville, Wisconsin can do port draws! The oncologist thought he was much better than he was (so he'll never be a GREAT doctor). I offered to take the day off, but he told me I'd be in and out in 10 minutes. I was there roughly 3.5 hours. Find a REAL cancer center, like Rush or UW.

The grounds are beautifully kept, and the walking trails are lovely. The staff here is very caring and first rate. They really took time to keep us updated on progress and did so much to help our family. Even the chaplain took time to visit my dad regularly. We were able to attend one of the Sunday non-denominational church services, and the music and message were punctuated by the breath-taking chapel and stained glass window. My father's only complaint was the food, but he was on a very restricted diet. It certainly smelled great in the halls during meal times. I highly recommend this place.

I said I have a chiropractor and massage therapist. He said don't see your chiropractor till after the MRI. She might mess it up. the next day my massage therapist worked on the cuboid bone in my foot. That was the cause of the foot problem. I had tight muscles in my thigh which made the leg seem weaker. It was a very odd visit with DR. Pastore. I had the feeling he was trying to push me into medical solutions for things that could be easily remedied by my long time chiropractor and massage therapist. Doctors almost always consider complimentary therapy bad.and useless. . I am left with feeling uneasy about visiting Dr. Pastore in the future.

I mainly went to him as my right foot had gone numb. It was quite debilitating, and I could not drive. After a thorough examination he explained to me it was not my foot and believed the problem to be my back. He immediately ordered physical therapy for me, a lumbar MRI, told me to find a back doctor and I started my journey of healing which does concern my back. I will be forever grateful that he did not order unnecessary tests. Physical Therapy and Acupuncture is actually what is healing the numbness in my foot. I'm sure you can recognize them by their motto: "Always low WAGES....ALWAYS" Anywho, Finally, I convinced my Mother to allow me to pay for a visit to a foot doctor as I couldn't bear to see her work another day on her painful foot. Not only is Dr. Parrilli very knowledgeable and thorough, all with an exceptional bedside manner, but knowing that my Mom did not have insurance, he took care of her extensive issue at a mere fraction of what he normally would charge. You just don't see that kind of unselfish, non-greedy care from any professional anymore nowadays.....it was greatly appreciated and restored my faith in humanity. Also, Dr. Parrilli's "girl friday" is a sweetheart as well!

I am usually a very active male, (a PE teacher) and, at 50 years old, the biggest mistake of my life was to have this doctor operate on me! For a simple 1.5 cm umbilical hernia, this doctor used a 4"x6" plastic mesh without my consent. I ended up with the worst chronic pain, a terrible quality of life, and basically disabled. When I repeatedly brought my issues to his attention, he blew off all of my concerns and just said to hang in there. My stomach became grossly misshapen and after 4 excruciatingly painful months, 3 ER visits, and lots of tests, I had to have a complete mesh removal and an open abdominal wall reconstructive surgery. Now, I have a vertical 7" scar, down my middle, and am going to have a long recovery ahead of me, as 2 solid years of 6x/week exercise has been wiped out by this terrible man - who, claims he's never heard of a mesh product giving anyone any problems? Also, it's been real rough on my relationship, career, and bank account. What should have cost about $7,500 for a simple procedure, a few stitches, and about a week off of work, the results of Dr. Toyama's procedure, cost over $139,450, and lots of time off my first year at a new school, and this man couldn't care less. A quick google search of a bard ventralight st mesh, brings up thousands and thousands of problems people have with them, as the plastic used is believed to be biologically incompatible with human tissue - and the incompatibility or complete rejection by my body of the cheap, non medical grade plastic used has been my experience. Again, the worst decision of my life to date, is to have Dr. Mark Toyama operate on me - please avoid this man and practice at all costs. He is also an outright liar and fudged lots of paperwork. I highly recommend Dr. Jeff Fronza. I needed hemorrhoidectomy surgery to repair a ruptured vein/artery and Dr. Fronza was available to see me immediately (the same day my GP recommended me) and scheduled my surgery for the very next day. Dr. Fronza's fast actions and availability ended up being hugely important because the amount of blood loss (pre- / during surgery) ultimately required a transfusion. I hate to imagine where I would have been had the surgery scheduling been delayed. Dr. Fronza and his team were also invaluable during the recovery process - both in the hospital and in the weeks to follow. Recovery is known to be incredibly difficult for this type of surgery (and even more so given my low blood count). Dr. Fronza was always available to see me and spent considerable time during our appointments discussing the situation, next steps, etc. I never felt rushed (and often our appointments would last 30 mins. or more) and had the freedom to schedule follow-up appointments as often as I wanted (including during his office hours / non-appointment times). He has an excellent bed side manner and helped me through a very difficult recovery. read more

I recently (Oct. '12) had a surgery through Northwestern Surgical Associates. This was my first surgery and the first time I was to be put under. For having to have a surgery, I couldn't have been more pleased. I had a great Doctor (Dr. Jeffery Fronza) who diagnosed and performed the surgery. He was very accessible for questions prior and after my surgery. The team and facility at the Olsen center were great. No hassles or issues. Being nervous for my first time, the staff was pleasant and calming. Followup with Dr. Fronza went well. My recovery has gone better and quicker than I expected. Dr.Fronza answered all my questions and even promptly answered some followup questions via email. I would definitely recommend my doctor (Dr. Fronza) and the folks at Northwestern Surgical Associates. About the only negative experience I can relay came from a comment made by my wife who wasn't thrilled with the person at discharge who wheeled me out of the Olsen center. Though I didn't have an issue, she felt he was a little cold and sort of just dropped me off at the curb and took off without seeing if I needed any help getting in the car. read more

I would highly recommend Dr. Steven J Stryker to my family, friends and anyone looking for a gastrointestinal surgeon. After having a colonoscopy and seeing several surgical specialists, one even telling me to get my affairs in order that I had less than 6 months to live because surgery wouldn't be possible with my current heart condition. My primary doctor recommended I see Dr. Stryker at Northwestern and told me that some other physicians that he'd worked with used Dr. Stryker. From the moment I called his staff and started working with Dr. Stryker they we're very professional, down to earth and knowledgeable. They provided me and my family with answers for our questions and reassured us of all of concerns. They provided detailed explanations throughout the process and made me feel like I was part of the family. Even though others weren't willing to take on my difficult case, Dr. Stryker had the confidence that they would be able to handle my medical condition. Over a year has gone by and I'm now able enjoy my life. read more

I was referred to Dr. Fronza by my local family practice physician for a paraesphageal hernia. We mutually decided that surgery was the best option. Dr. Fronza performed a Nissen Fundoplication this past November. Unfortunately, my body did not react to it the way we had hoped (nor the way it should have!). Dr. Fronza and I were in frequent contact and more testing was ordered. It became apparent that a revision to the original surgery would be necessary (through no fault of Dr. Fronza's surgical capabilities). Dr. Fronza and his office assistant Cindy went above and beyond to get the surgery scheduled nearly immediately. Dr. Fronza and his residents and students were always very thorough, caring and compassionate. They made sure that my questions were answered, my pain was controlled, and that I received exceptional care. Cindy has been such an incredible help with scheduling, insurance, and disability paperwork. I am so very grateful for all they have done for me. read more

I had an extensive abdominal surgery with Dr. Fronza in the recent past. He was extremely attentive both before and after the surgery and worked with me to assure I knew everything i needed to know to make informed decisions regarding my care. As one specific example, I was experiencing a great deal of anxiety because of an unexpected complication that occurred during my surgery. Dr. Fronza took the time to completely explain the entire procedure, what went wrong, and how it was fixed. He did so calmly, simply and understandably. The time that he took in explaining the surgery and the complication completely reassured not only me, but also my family members. Dr. Fronza is exactly what I wanted and needed in a general surgeon, and was expert enough to even bring in other specialists to consult on my case because of specific issues at hand. Dr. Fronza has performed several of my surgeries (due to a condition the causes scar tissue to form easier and faster than it does for others). Not only are his surgical skills above and beyond, but I find his personality helps to comfort me while undergoing each procedure; and I wish more doctors had his approach to medicine. He's my go-to guy for any questions, even answers my questions that are not surgery related or related to his specific field. I've been spoiled by his treatment. After traveling as far away as the Mayo Clinic to treat my condition, I am extremely pleased to find the amazing skills of Dr. Fronza in my own backyard. Would recommend him, his associates, Northwestern Surgical Associates, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital to anyone and everyone. read more

Dr. Jeff Fronza provided outstanding care from my initial office visit through my inguinal hernia surgery and all post-surgery communication and follow up. He possesses superior medical skill and an engaging personality, and exhibits a genuine concern for his patients. This combination of traits is rare, and my wife and I feel very fortunate that we found him for my surgery. In addition to performing my surgery with great precision and providing plenty of pre and post op communication that day, Dr. Fronza phoned me at home the following morning to make certain that all was well. I want to write an honest review of this group. At first I thought they'd be great because my doctor referred me to dr fronza. My appointment with him was brief. His clerical secretary made the appointment for me. This doctor doesn't use a PA or other associates; he sees his own patients. I thought that was good but was highly disappointed after my surgery. My surgery was a complete disaster leaving me in much worse shape than I have ever been in. Mistakes were made and the lack of attention to detail by this doctor was proven over and over again. I am partially disabled due to his surgical performance. I could never recommend this practice to anyone. read more
