I think I found the best internist, EVER. Setting up an appointment was a breeze - the receptionist, Angie, is a sweetheart, and she was able to squeeze me in when luckily there was a cancellation. The office is located off of St. Clair in the Northwestern Memorial building (and there is validated parking available); the office is very cute, clean, and modern, and I waited less than 10 minutes after my scheduled time (which is pretty much unheard of; the receptionist also apologized which I thought was ridiculous!). I filled out basic medical history and such on their patient portal beforehand, which I thought was quite convenient and makes things more efficient. I was really excited with all the raving reviews on not only on Yelp, but on other health websites that rated Dr. O'Mara. When the doc walked in, she was extremely nice, very knowledgeable, straightforward, a great listener, gentle, professional, and very informative. She listened to all of my health issues as well as my thoughts and opinions, and basically gave me a plan of action. She took her time with me, asking questions, and the whole time, I was not felt rushed! The best thing is that she was very genuine and I was extremely comfortable, being a new patient with all these high expectations! There is a lab on-site, and the phlebotomist, Lauren P., was so sweet and kind, and drawing blood was not at all uncomfortable (considering I have a very low threshold of pain and am such a pansy!). Dr. O'Mara and everyone on staff seems to be extremely detail-oriented and organized (which I absolutely love). The high ratings on the doc do not do her justice - she really is AWESOME. I wish I could give Dr. O'Mara higher praise than 5 stars. I have recommended friends and coworkers alike, and now I recommend her to you. Dr. O'Mara's office is a clean, modern one-physician practice. She exhibits all of the professionalism and knowledge I have come to expect and appreciate from Northwestern practitioners and affiliates. I was randomly assigned to her through Northwestern's physician referral practice after I suffered a serious medical event and I was shocked by how great my experiences with her have been. My initial consultation was in her office, where she interviewed me about all of my health concerns, family history, and really took the time to get to know both me as a person and my health issues. Despite a relatively complicated health history, Dr. O'Mara has gone above and beyond. She takes the time to research issues about my medicine and listens to my questions, no matter how silly they may seem to me, in a non judgmental environment. She has followed up on problems or before procedures through phone calls about things I, at times, hadn't even thought about. She is always eager to explain these things to me. She truly cares about her patient's well being and happiness -- even following up on what I thought about places she had sent me for a referral. In short, I have never received this level of care with any doctor before. Her assistant, Angie, is also very nice and helpful. To top it off, it's extremely easy to make appointments here, and Dr. O'Mara keeps an electronic portal where you can ask her questions, view your test results quickly, and access other features from your visits. The best decision I made for my mom, who suffered from Alzheimer's, was to have Dr. O'Mara by our side. Having a DNR in place is one thing, being able to talk to Dr. O'Mara when we had an actual emergency was a godsend for us. My mom suffered a stroke and Dr. O'Mara was on the scene at the hospital, helping us through the trauma of the event and overseeing the care, as our point person. She came to my mom's rehab center to administer a flu shot when she found out that the center's shots had been delayed. She made an in home visit when my mom was released from rehab. She helped me get hospice in place and guided me through making staff adjustments that greatly improved our hospice experience. Dr. O'Mara's presence made such a difference as my mom was dying; I will be forever grateful to her. She is an excellent doctor and human being. read more

I have been seeing Dr. O'Mara for a few years now and every time I see her she makes me very uncomfortable. She's not good at listening to what I say and helping me with my medical issues, and she's been openly judgmental about issues I've brought up. Two years ago she told me I had to lose weight, and when I came back last year and I had dropped a few pounds she told me how proud she was without inquiring about how I had lost the weight- which was mainly due to stress from the loss of my father. Recently, she brushed off a complaint I had and made me feel dumb for bringing it up, and it the spiraled into a much larger issue when she should have caught it during our first appointment. I will no longer be seeing Dr. O'Mara and hope she sees this so she has the chance to improve her services for future patients. read more

When I first started seeing Dr. O'Mara, I thought she was nice, but it takes time to get to know a doctor, and after two years of seeing her several times for a variety of issues, she has proven that she lacks basic empathy and listening skills. She even asked me if I thought my diagnosis was fibromyalgia. Isn't SHE supposed to determine what the diagnosis is ? She became very dismissive and rushed (except when she brought in her students to sit in on my exam). I will not be seeing this doctor again and when I asked for a copy of my medical records to get a second opinion she became defensive and outright unprofessional. read more

I was looking for a way to have a Doctor I would get to know, with access to everything Northwestern Memorial Hospital offers. Dr. Rachel O'Mara's innovative practice, Streeterville Internal Medicine, proved to be exactly what I was hoping to find. She is wonderfully thorough with new patients; she truly takes the time to delve through medical issues, while still having a warm and accessible persona that is great as well. The practice is VERY high tech, in a friendly way; through the Patient Web Portal, you can ask questions, make appointments, and request prescription refills- sweet! Don't be intimated about the downtown location; discounted parking and a very user-friendly building makes it all surprisingly simple. I found Streeterville Internal online and had read good reviews so thought I'd give it a try. I arrived to my appointment on time and there was no wait. It was a very efficient process and both the nurse and Dr. O'Mara were friendly and made the whole experience very comfortable. She sent two follow up messages through the Streeterville internal medicine patient portal that were informative and helpful. I'm normally use to getting a phone call from my doctor with results, but the portal message was nice because I could check it on my own time. I first sought out Dr O'Mara following treatment for hodgkins lymphoma. I had been through the ringer and seen so many doctors; I needed someone who could help with holistic care as well as help me with ongoing thyroid issues. I have had nothing but stellar treatment in their office. My visits are always productive, but I am also quite diligent about prep and follow up. In addition to outright solving my thyroid challenges, Dr O'Mara's recommendations and careful evaluation have helped me overcome several issues I had following cancer treatment. She is an excellent physician and one thing I really like about her is that she is always bringing alternatives and new research into her practice and recommendations. That's hard to find. I have been seeing Dr. Rachel O'Mara at Streeterville Internal Medicine for almost four years, and I couldn't be happier with the care I receive there. Everything in this practice--the friendly and professional front desk staff, Lauren, the onsite phlebotomist, the welcoming and tasteful office decor, the online portal, and the biggest plus of all, Dr. O'Mara herself, have made my experiences very positive and beneficial to my overall health. Highly intelligent, thoughtful, and perceptive, Dr. O'Mara is also very kind and compassionate. She clearly cares deeply about her patients and does everything possible to help them succeed in achieving optimal health. Dr. O'Mara has always taken the time to address all of my questions and concerns. I have never felt that she was rushed in any way. When I have been in need of a referral, Dr. O'Mara has given me wonderful referrals to doctors on staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and when I have had tests done, she has gotten back to me with the results within twenty-four hours, either through the portal or with a personal phone call. Another thing I really appreciate about Dr. O'Mara is the holistic approach she takes to medicine, demonstrating a deep understanding of the role that things like stress and anxiety can have on a person's health. I appreciate her willingness to work as part of a team with other specialists you may be seeing in order to ensure consistency and the highest possible quality of care. Dr. O'Mara's staff is always kind, friendly, courteous, and efficient. I love the convenience of being able to use the online portal to leave and receive messages, to make, cancel, and/or reschedule appointments, to review my health history at any time, and even to pay my bill. Insurance claims are filed by Dr. O'Mara's staff quickly and efficiently. There have been several situations in which I needed to be seen right away, and after making a quick call or sending a message through the portal, Dr. O'Mara has always found a way to accommodate me and to squeeze me in either that same day or the very next day. If you need to have blood drawn, there is a phlebotomist (Lauren) right on site to draw your blood. In the past, I have dreaded having my blood drawn because it is difficult to find a good vein on my arm and repeated attempts have often been necessary. However, with Lauren (who is always so warm and sweet), one attempt is all that has ever been needed, and when the needle goes in, the sting is so minimal as to be almost non-existent. And speaking of needles, if you have an aversion to needles (as I do) and yet you need an injection--Dr. O'Mara has the magic touch. I received a flu shot from Dr. O'Mara last fall, and I honestly felt almost no pain at all when the needle went in. Dr. O'Mara truly is a wonderful doctor with all of the qualities one would desire when seeking top-notch medical care. If you want a doctor who is smart, funny, kind, compassionate, and well-informed, Dr. O'Mara is the doctor you want. So bummed Dr OMara is now a medical concierge service. She stands high and above most medical practices. In a time where patients must wait 6 months for an appointment, speak with a call center, receive results over a portal and rushed out of the office it was so wonderful to receive the human touch with regard to your medical fitness. Dr. O'mara is nice. Her bedside was just ok. At first seems personable but then go in again and she doesn't even review your chart before the visit. So she sits there and reads over your chart while there. At the end of every visit I've had with her its awkward. She never wraps up or says it was good to see you or if you have any questions let us know.... She basically detaches her laptop then steps out. Some visits I'm unsure if we are done. This last visit might be the final. I went in with an ongoing issue and have done your basics to treat it, when I went in she hardly asked any questions and agreed with my diagnosis and was left doing the same thing I've been doing. I was not happy with this last visit and sad to say she will probably charge a lot for zero help or advisement. She is just ok at best. Her office is new and nice. It is only her and Angie. You will have to wait awhile, don't think she has ever been on time. Her waiting room is very sterile and awkward. On the other side, Angie is great! Hope this helps read more

I spent a lot of time searching for a new Dr. after moving to Chicago. Dr. O'Mara lived up to all my hopes and expectations. She has a really great bedside manner, is warm and really took her time to get to know me and answer all of my questions during my visit last week. Dr. O'Mara was my first PCP when I moved to Chicago. I picked her because of her strong medical background and convenient office location. Unfortunately, I had an insurance change and was not able to see her again last year. When I had to see another provider, the office visit experience was so different and made me miss having such a caring doctor. I made it a mission to find out if I could see Dr. O'Mara again with my insurance. This brings me back to this year, where I was able to have my routine physical with Dr. O'Mara. I was reminded why I liked seeing her in the first place. Her staff is very efficient and kind. Because I had a wait before I was seen, the medical assistants drew my blood beforehand and gave me a snack afterwards (which was must appreciated because I was fasting all day). Then when it was my turn, I was quickly roomed and seen by Dr. O'Mara promptly. My medication was sent and ready at my local pharmacy and I was able to pick it up that same day (after I stopped by Gino's East for lunch - they are so close to the office and have amazing lunch specials!) Anyways, after having some insurance issues, I messaged the staff on the patient portal and was able to be in contact w/ Alex who addressed it immediately. I am extremely grateful for the patience of Alex and Dr. O'Mara as they helped me w/ everything. I highly recommend this practice! read more

If only all practices were run like this one! The care has been excellent, and the staff is great too. The waiting room is small, and it seems like they schedule it so usually it's just you - i.e. you're not sitting there for 40 minutes being coughed on by strangers. Also - you're not sitting there for 40 minutes at all! My appointments have always run relatively on schedule, give or take 15 minutes. It's also easy to set up appointments and communicate with the staff and doctor, via the patient portal - and responses are prompt & thorough too. Everyone who works there is helpful and nice, as opposed to clueless/coldly disinterested (which has been my experience at previous practices). All areas of the office are spotlessly clean (something you hope for at a doctor's office but sadly don't always get!), yet not cold & sterile feeling - interior & waiting room have design elements in common with a spa - calming. I'm not the type to *not* go somewhere solely due to interior design - but it's a nice cherry on top, especially since medical visits can be kind of stressful! Dr. O'Mara is great - I feel very comfortable, and she listens thoroughly. One time I went in for a lingering sore throat, nothing too major (just a stubborn cold), and was pleasantly surprised to receive a phone call from the doc herself a couple days later checking in and making some recommendations - maybe my expectations were very low given previous practices I went to, but I was very impressed. Also I like that she suggests trying lifestyle changes to improve issues (I used to have wrist/arm pain, and also insomnia) before going right to medications - she targets the cause, not just the symptoms. read more

First off, know this is going to be a stellar review even though I am hesitant to rave about Dr. O'Mara and her solo practice at Northwestern as I don't want her to get so busy that things change. Selfish, I know. I went for six years without having a primary care physician .Luckily, I found Dr O'Mara and have a been a patient of Dr. O'Mara's since January 2013.This has been a bumpy year medically speaking, and I am not sure I could have made it without Dr. O'Mara ! I have a different relationship with Dr. O'Mara than I have ever had with any other doctor. I feel freer in confiding in her than I have any other doctor and I know that feeling is not misplaced. She is warm, approachable, respectful ,very observant, instills confidence ,allows for disagreement ,and is sensitive to LGBT health concerns. I value our doctor/patient relationship with her highly. I have other doctors with whom it is difficult to get a message to. Dr. O'Mara and her staff correspond with via the portal where you can make appointments, leave and receive messages, and view lab work. Dr. O'Mara's solo practice is located in Streeterville. It is a modern ,up to date office. Many tests can be done in the office and there is phlebotomy service in the office. On the web site Dr O'Mara states, "bureaucracy surrounding medical care acts as a hurdle to seeing a doctor. I think a smaller, personal practice environment encourages people to see their doctor in the first place, so a good doctor-patient relationship can take root." This is so very true and I see her following through with that commitment ! We have established a great doctor-patient relationship and I am so appreciative of it. The office runs on time and I have never felt rushed even though, as I said ,I have been a needy patient this year. Dr. O'Mara is the best doctor I have ever worked with. She is amazing. I have asthma issues that have never been addressed with past doctors (it's been 20+ years) other than RXs that had adverse reactions. She has nailed things on the spot that took other doctors a lot of tests to acknowledge, perhaps from a legal perspective, but she's very smart and gets it. Beyond that, her demeanor is that of a girlfriend that you want to go have drinks with vs. a sterile doctor. And her office and staff are peaceful and calming. Can't go wrong. read more

My wife and I moved to Chicago just over 1 year ago. My wife had had some pretty mediocre healthcare on our previous city which had led to complications with our feet. She picked the office from comments online and because it was so close to home. She came back after her first visit pleasantly surprised with the visit and encouraged me to also go for a check-up also. I have seen my fare share of doctors, both good and bad. As a former cancer patient I am very careful when it comes to my health. Dr. Omara and her staff seem to come from somewhere back in time, it is an office where the doctor actually takes the time to listen to you and completely investigate and discuss any of your concerns. It was probably one of the most comprehensive appointments I have ever had, as are all of the visits I have made. I travel frequently and her office has always gone out of their way to get me in when I am in a pinch. They follow up on their online portal super-fast and have encouraged me to continue to improve my health. One night, my wife accidentally lost one of her last steroid pills and we were not sure what to do We called the after-hours number on a Sunday, and the Doctor answered herself and talked to her for several minutes and called in a replacement medication. Their office staff is both friendly and efficient and has always been able to work with my difficult schedule. I researched many, many doctors and decided to book an appointment with Dr. O'Mara based on her outstanding credentials and areas of expertise. I thought I was going to meet with a few doctors before deciding on one, but it didn't take long for me to know that Dr. O'Mara was exactly what I was looking for. On my first visit, she sat down with me for a very long time to get to know me and my entire health history and background. She took a very genuine interest in me and was very thorough in her review. I visited Dr. O'Mara's office for the first time this week and it was the best experience I've had at a doctor's office ever. I found Dr. O'Mara's website and requested an appointment online, and Angie contacted me the next day with an appointment. Once I was on the schedule, I was able to enter all of my patient information online rather that filling out paperwork in the office. As soon as I walked into the office for my appointment I felt comfortable and at-ease because the office is new, beautiful and clean. It was a pleasure meeting with Dr. O'Mara who spent lots of time with me and actually listened and answered my questions (even the lame ones). It was refreshing to actually see the doctor right away and have lots of one-on-one time. Dr. O'Mara ordered bloodwork at my appointment, and I was able to log in to the patient portal the next day to see my results and read a personal message. Wish I could give her more stars. She is very sweet and I think has her heart in the right place BUT if you have a problem that is not mainstream-textbook you will not be happy with her. She could not cubbyhole my symptoms into a nice neat package so she told me it was all in my head. After 9 months, with a more seasoned and creative doctor, I am feeling much better and most of my symptoms are gone. As it turned out my thyroid meds were too low and I was being treated by my TSH numbers alone. Once my thyroid meds were raised my appetite returned, my metabolism returned, and most other symptoms dissipated. My husband did not have any success with her either. She sent him on one wild goose chase after another and, as it turned out, his white blood cell count was elevated due to a tooth infection. Once the tooth was removed (8 months later and after an un-needed torn meniscus surgery) his symptoms went away. His new rheumatologist and new periodontist all agreed that this was the cause of his problems. Need creative problem solving - seek help elsewhere. read more
