Not So Shabby - Front entrance display! - Antiques Near Me - Holland, Michigan

For those who go here, it never states that everything is genuine antiques. There is a mix of handmade items, new items, antiques and reproductions. There is a booth where you can make your own candles even. The vendors are very friendly (if you catch one there) and the staff is as well. They try very hard to ask everyone if they need help and are willing to walk with you if you are looking for something specific. The store is much bigger than it appears and it takes some time to go and look through everything. read more

The staff at Not So Shabby sold my 6-year-old son a can of tinker toys that turned out to be missing more than half of the pieces, and many of the remainder were broken (also it was not an antique, or even vintage, but that's another matter and not the point of this review). With our son unable to use his new purcase, my wife explaind to him that he would need to take the item back to the counter to return the item. We expected that we would learn a valuable lesson about working with adults and handling store transactions. When he bravely went in to ask for a refund, he was bluntly told that there are no returns. Now I get it about policy and all that, but you literally put a 6-year old in tears over $12. There was no effort to come to any sort of amenable resolution and the poor child ended up dumping the toy in the trash can outside their door. So sad! So yes, he learned a lesson. He learned about rigid polices and uncaring customer service. Thanks for nothing guys - the tears of our child were an awesome end to our afternoon. Please enjoy that $12. In summary I would advise potential buyers to treat this store with caution. If something is misrepresented (and as other reviews have noted, it happens), you will have absolutely no recourse. Based on the actions of the counter staff (all 3 of them!), I am guessing this matter has come up more than once. We have bought things here in the past but will not be back. read more

I was however turned off by the lady at the front counter checking people out who took off her mask while helping another customer who also did not have his mask on. . Excellent selection and variety. Lots of furniture, natural and refinished. I visited 7 antique stores from Saugatuck/Douglas to Muskegon today and this was by far my favorite. Got great deals at a booth that was 50% off/closing. I purchased a runner sled, red lantern and white figure skates for a Christmas porch idea (total was $65). Would definitely go back. read more

Easy to lose a couple of hours in here if you're not careful! The only reason for not giving 5 stars is that it is a bit on the pricey side compared to other antique stores / malls of this nature. Other than that though the store is very well put together the service is friendly the variety of items is crazy :-) will have to go back again to see everything I missed the first couple of times! read more

Walked through Not So Shabby yesterday, for the second time ever. One thing I would warn those who shop here about is to beware of reproductions and if you can't identify them from genuine antiques, this may not be the venue for you. I've been in antiques for over 3 decades and am a serious collector. Just on yesterday's quick walk-through, I saw a reproduction doll marked as a genuine Simon Halbig and priced as if it were. There were other repro pieces here and there in the mall as well. On my previous stop here, there was a booth that had a sampler that looked like a repro to me, yet the frame, nails to the frame, etc were all clearly very old. I took it to the desk and talked to the people working there. I said the sampler, with stitching that included a date in the 1700s, was clearly a reproduction, but asked them to call the seller, because I was curious about everything looking genuine, when I was certain it wasn't. They called the seller, who said she finds antique pieces of plain cloth and genuine antique frames, then she stitches the samplers (new) and frames them in the antique framing so they look to be antiques. What tipped me off was the way the fabric was aged (not correct for an antique sampler, of which I have a collection) and the thread used. When I was in yesterday, I looked to see if this sampler was in the mall - it was gone. I really hate to think someone thought they actually got an 18th century sampler and was duped, if that's the case. Sometimes you have to really know antiques to identify repros/fakes, and shoppers here who can't identify them - and none of them were marked as reproductions or priced accordingly as reproductions. If you just like what you're buying, repro or not, and you're okay with the asking price, then it's no biggie for you. read more
