How much abuse are we ready to take from insurance companies and their big deductibles and hospitals that way overcharge for the services they provide? My recent visit with an orthopedist at Sutter Health Daly City, was beyond disappointing. The doctor spent less then 10 minutes talking to me (and that too, because I insisted that he explains and shows me on a model what exactly my injuries are) and he just went to the computer and printed instructions for PT work and a suggestion that I take Ibuprofen for the rest of my life -never mind the damage that can cause to your kidneys. Did I mention he strongly dismissed any of the alternative options I enquired about such as Prolotherapy, (which is very common in Europe), platelet-rich plasma or shock wave therapies claiming that "doctors who offer those "unproven therapies" are just after your money" -to which I responded "it's not like this consultation is given to me for free". Cost of the "visit": 590$! I could have totally bypassed the orthopedist and taken my MRI report to the PT or the Ostheopath and saved myself 600$. To close this up, I did go to an out of network doctor who practices Prolotherapy, and during a consultation that lasted over an hour, not only did I get my Prolotherapy injections but he also enquired about other aspects of my health, physical and emotional. A few days later I was walking without a limp -first time in 6 months! I hope the new HHS brings some decency to our health care system. read more

Family practice in Daly City is exemplifies by a lack of communication, uncooperative attitude, lack of problem solving, cold lack of concern for patient needs, no coordination of care between physicians and PAs, calllous disregard for the full picture, absence of quality care, and more. I am instructed to call 911 or go to the emergency room or urgent care for the most simple requests. I have been denied treatment is "misunderstandings" that caused personal harm. There is zero response on weekends and holidaysor after hours. There is ONE real professional in multiple experiences during the past 6 months since I moved to Pacifica. Nadia on the Burlingame/Daly City team liatens, problem solves, actually reads my chart, and calls back, then follows through. Do not need any real medical attention. This is not the place. Daly City and Pacifica have few doctors and fewer specialists and no real urgent care centers either. If you don't want to drive 15-20 miles, you're in for a bad experience. read more

If you're looking for a new GP - run away from anything to do with this flim flam outfit. Did have a good doc at Sutter but he retired. Got switched over to a "new" doc. Went in for a physical but some idiot coded it as another type of visit for which the doc was out of the insurance network - gotta pay full price. After super human efforts nothing could be changed about the billing. Physically tracked down the admin for the doc - they move around from clinic to clinic - promised - literally - she'd take care of it. Never heard from her again. Then talked to the doc directly - nothing she could do - was advised to find another GP because she could not guarantee how a visit would be coded or billed - seriously - in the middle of a pandemic. I was really surprised to find such a low review of Sutter Health. This is a relatively new location so they are not too busy; I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for an appointment. The staff (front desk, nurses, doctors) have always very professional, polite, and friendly. Sutter also has an app that I downloaded (this is a rare thing! I find any excuse NOT to download an app, but the Sutter one has proved extremely helpful). You can login via fingerprint (yay! No more remembering passwords!), you can message your doctors, I can flip between my account and my daughter's account, I can view EOB's, bills, appointment summaries, etc. Before each appointment, I get a questionnaire that I can fill out easily over the app, so there's no paperwork to fill out at the office. My doctor gets all my questions beforehand and is ready to answer all of them at the appointment. The only limitation to the app is you cannot view some detailed bills; I have to login on my computer to do view those. My daughter sees Dr. Tejeda for pediatrics, and my general practitioner is Dr. Manaku. Both are incredibly friendly. The staff are also very responsive on email. And for after-hour emergencies, there is a 24-hour nurse line (they do triage your calls). Parking can be a little tough - I basically wouldn't rely on getting a free spot right away (sometimes I find a spot right outside the building, other times I've circled for 15 minutes. Contrary to the negative reviews of my fellow Yelpers, I had a good experience at this location: I had suffered from a poison oak rash for over 10 days now and all of the over-the-counter drugs or the folk medicine -like oatmeal spread- hadn't helped. I was in quite a distress as the rash was spreading and the itching kept me up at night. I called my regular doctor, but - as expected - he wasn't available at such a last-minute notice but the friendly lady on the other line must've felt my distress through the phone and looked if there was someone else that could see me right away. She asked if I would be willing to go to the 350 Rhode Island Sutter clinic, where there'd be a nurse practitioner to see me. I gladly accepted. When I got to the clinic, I checked in and waited only a short while until Vanessa (the NP) was ready to see me. Vanessa was very nice and I felt very much in good hands with her. She listened to my story, looked at my rash and then together we decided on the best treatment option. Thank you! read more

Public Service Announcement: do NOT visit this clinic if you have a high deductible plan. Even the negotiated rate with Cigna insurance, for a 20 minute visit with an NP (not a doctor) was surprise billed at $237. (Health care blue book prices such a visit in SF at $166 or so.) Someday post-service medical billing will be illegal (and my experience with Sutter Health actually prompted me to contact my Califnornia assemblyperson), but expect Sutter Health to exploit this loophole until then. You've been warned. Research shows surprise billing creates stress, and that stress kills you. Congrats on helping to kill people, Sutter Health. When I moved to the city 2+ years ago, I found a doctor in this clinic using Cigna's search tool. I scheduled a physical, and my doctor recommended some blood tests. When I went to the lab in the clinic to have the tests, the tech said something like "I should probably ask you if you know whether your insurance covers this clinic's lab." I expected it to, because it covered the doctors there, but called my insurance company to check. I learned that no, it didn't cover the blood work, and that it would cost over $100 out of pocket here. So I ran on foot over to the mission, and got the same test for $5. And then waited. And waited. And waited. Finally two weeks later the doc emailed me the unexciting not-worth-$100 test results. The physical was included as "preventive care" under my insurance so that was "free." (Plus a sweaty run to the mission!) Months later I had a pretty bad cold, scheduled a visit, and was billed $175. High but at least the negotiated rate. I paid it out of my HSA. So far so fine? A few months ago, I had a really nasty cough that would come on at night and not go away, so I scheduled a visit. My doctor wasn't available for an appointment that week and the scheduler asked if I would see a Nurse Practitioner instead. "Sure," I said, naively assuming there would be a similar or lower cost as for an actual doctor. I saw her for about 20 minutes, asked a bunch of questions, and got a prescription for some special cough syrup, plus a recommendation for an OTC allergy drug. When I got the bill, it was for $237. Two hundred thirty-seven and 00/100 United States Dollars. With the indecipherable billing description "Ov Est Lev 3." I called the billing department to ask what happened. I feared that this NP might not have been in network. They didn't even know, told me (exact quote) "It is patient responsibility to contact insurance to make sure provider is in network." Which is a bummer because when I first chose this clinic, I'm pretty sure they said every provider on staff was covered by Cigna. She couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me what the billing code meant. "You need to contact your insurance" was how that call ended. So I dutifully called my insurance company and to my simultaneous horror and delight, learned that I had in fact seen an in-network provider. For $237! Apparently the code meant a "level 3 office visit for an established patient." I asked what might have happened such that I triggered a level 3 visit. The prescription? Was it that I asked questions? The duration? The insurance company rep told me... to call someone else - the clinic. Which I did - the 3rd phone call now, They said that they couldn't tell me what triggered the level 3 visit, but that they would connect me to someone in billing. Which they did. Even though that's where I started with phone call number one. Anyway, the person in billing offered to launch a code review to see if I was billed correctly. She said it would take up to 4-6 weeks but probably only 2-3, and that my bill wouldn't be sent to collection for another 7 weeks or so. (Great, thanks!) She also said she could not tell me what triggered the "level 3 visit." The woman on the phone offered to have someone from another customer service department call my cell phone. Several weeks went by. Nothing. Then I got a late notice. I called them, and the billing department offered to set up a payment plan while my request was reviewed. Which I did. Then I finally got a call a couple months later. To explain my code review results? To apologize for overbilling vs the health care blue book? No. To tell me I was late on my payment plan. I was apoplectic. They sounded confused about why no one had done anything and said they needed another 30 days. I gave them another 30 hours instead. They failed to meet the deadline. I paid the balance. There is some good news. Over the past 9 years, I've written hundreds of Yelp reviews about great businesses (and the occasional scam). This has made my profile credible to Yelp's algorithms, which mean you, dear consumer, are likely to be reading this. Which means you can avoid this clinic. I wish you the best. AS A FORMER ER PATIENT at Sutter Health Mills I am writing this review. I am a former COVID victim and uninsured frontline healthcare worker who has been sent to collections recently even though I was making monthly payments. The fees, charges I was billed were consistent with State charges of over-billing by Sutter. Sutter Healthcare says they are non-profit but they are all about profits. The proof is the State of California has fined Sutter healthcare to the tune of $ 575 MILLION dollars for anti-competitive, anti- trust criminal behavior. These people buy up any competition in any local market(s) then jack prices thru the roof. Also do not expect any help, sympathy, financial aide as a frontline healthcare worker. The manager Amanda is just as defensive and insensitive as her staff so I guess I can't expect much from lack of leadership. She also was talking about my sdi that include the date i became injured and hospitalized in front of patients in the waiting room out loud yelling until I asked to talk seperately in a room. They refused to adjust it. However, she finally heard my story of what happened. She was extremely rude defensive and unprofessional to become loud with me in the waiting room area. She should've initially gave me the space to hear my concerns and said "step into the office so we can discuss your concerns in private." She did not we argued as if we were in market. I can't blame her staff if they are under such poor leadership. No wonder her staff is the same way due to lack of training!My life and my privacy was not important to her due to her becoming upset! The doctors here are great overall. What I have a problem with is the incompetent and rude administrative staff and nurses. Apparently, there was some switch regarding the relationship between Brown & Toland and Sutter Health at the beginning of the year. My doctor has officially switched to Sutter Health in my insurance plan automatically so there shouldn't be an issue. However, because I hadn't been to Sutter Health this year, the information in the system still identifies Brown & Toland. In the electronic age, I'm not sure why you can't look up my insurance using my ID since that hasn't changed in decades. Do I actually have to give you guys a photocopy of my insurance card before you can acknowledge my insurance coverage? I have had multiple staff/nurses sending me rude messages regarding this issue stating that they can't give a referral because the information shows Brown & Toland. When one person looks it up and confirms, why aren't you guys updating your electronic records? That's not my fault - it's yours. It's exhausting. Completely illogical and lazy. Also, I've been having some health issues and asked for referral(s) and have been reprimanded via electronic message - "they aren't going to see you now because of Coronavirus" or condescendingly telling me I should wait until later to have tests done due to Coronavirus. Do you think people are idiots? Also, some practitioners are, in fact, currently scheduling appointments for May and beyond - or virtual appointments. Many of them are already booked through June. Why would I wait an extra month to get an appointment? Teach your administrative staff and nurses some common sense. There are also some serious issues with their health records. My lab results from the last two labs that were taken are impossible to find in the system. When I spoke with a provider over the phone, it turns out they were looking at labs from a decade ago. Other doctors have difficulty finding any lab results in my records. They need to work on a reliable system for updating the electronic records and ensuring that they can actually be accessed by patients and providers. read more

My husband and I use this laboratory to get routine bloodwork done often (since we both have health issues) and it is never a professional or pleasant experience. It says the clinic opens at 8 am but no one has EVER been there at 8am when I arrive. The clinic is slow to open and the phlebotomist is late every single time - sometimes up to 45 minutes. He usually rolls in late and then it takes him another 20 minutes or so to set up. He always looks tired or hung over or something. There is only one phlebotomist so being late should not be an option. I can't believe the person in charge there is tolerating this lack of professionalism with their employees. This is healthcare (not retail) and being on time or early is the standard for physicians, nurses and all medical staff. The front desk staff routinely apologizes for him so this must be a routine occurrence, not just a coincidence. One time, I called around 8:15 to see if he was there and whoever answered the phone said to come on in. I got there and then the front desk person said he was out sick that day and the blood lab was closed and that I must have talked to the "wrong person". I called the main number that is given on their website under Laboratory Services. How disorganized! After a night of fasting and needing to get to work, I need to be able to rely on a health lab. I know this is a Sutter owned lab so I'm surprised these practices are tolerated. It's not CPMC (which has amazing customer service at all campuses!) but still, it is Sutter, and this a terrible reflection on Sutter Health. read more

I was a patient at Sutter Health for just under 15 years. I have always been in great health. I was dropped without notification or explanation at the beginning of the pandemic. After I was dropped without notification, I became ill. I made an appointment to see my Dr in Berkeley after I was advised on how to change my insurance. Went to Berkeley on BART (during the height of the Pandemic Twice!) transfer to an Uber and Twice was blown off after calling to clarify directions (And still no word until weeks after that I'd been dropped), my Dr of four years still refusing refills. I still struggle to get a Dr. Hoping to see one before my condition deteriorates further. THEY Just Don't Give A Damn. If want service you can count on please; Stay Away From Them. We have a good Doctor here - giving credit where it's due. However, who cares how good they are if you can't see him/her when you need to? The main idea of having a family pediatrician is to go see them when there is such a need. Instead they are booked to the brim with no wiggle room. Today we came for a scheduled appointment although with another doctor, as ours was booked, and because they did a mistake with the appointment and no doctor was available, they sent me away with my 2yo who was explicitly saying in the lobby "my tummy hurts". read more

We have been going to Dr. Tejada as our pediatrician based on the advice of our delivery nurses. He has been very calm, assuring, and professional. Nurses have been very steady and calm for the many (many, many) shots for our baby. It's like shots every month at first, poor kiddo. The service/experience with the lab was standard. The costs however were not - I would venture to say what they charge borders on criminal. DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU ARE 100% SURE YOUR INSURANCE WILL COVER ALL OF IT. I found Sutter Health through my insurance portal and the doctors were listed as in network, so I assumed the services would be covered. I was sent for some routine blood work that I was told would be covered. Most of it was, however one test was billed as diagnostic instead of preventative and they charged my over $200 FOR THAT ONE TEST. Over $200 for 1 simple blood test is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard - I checked online and the same test in my area is supposed to cost on average $77 and that is without insurance, and the range is $25-$100 max. I was essentially charged almost 10x what I would have paid at the cheapest lab. I can't believe that is allowed! I called to ask and they said the policy was standard across their network.
