Lots of confidence, lots of talk about how they handle cases like mine all the time. I signed that week. That was the last real conversation I had with the attorney. What followed was four months of billing statements I couldn't decode. Entries for "review of file" and "internal conference" and "correspondence" -- correspondence with who? Not me. I asked twice for an itemized explanation and got a call back that explained nothing and, I noticed later, was itself billed. When I asked what the plan was, I was told they were "developing strategy." By February the retainer was gone. Nothing had been filed. The other side had not been contacted as far as I could tell. When I said I wanted to stop, there was no argument and no offer to walk me through where the money went -- just a closing letter and a request for the remaining balance. Maybe every firm works this way and I'm the naive one. But I gave these people money at the worst moment of my life and got a stack of invoices out of it. Ask for a written scope of work before you sign anything. I didn't and it cost me.
