I visited Nu Movement for the first time last night for the soft launch of Pura Yoga. It's a great space for practicing yoga and is also available for dance, pilates, and art. The room itself is on the smaller side, I'd guess there's enough space for a class of 10-15 people. They have a side room with bolsters, blankets, and yoga mats for anyone who needs to borrow equipment. The first thing I noticed upon entering was the scent. They must have had an essential oil diffuser or something, because I immediately smelled a very calming aroma. I'm not sure exactly what the scent was, but it was soothing and not overpowering. They also have art from local artists around the walls, making for a very well-decorated and beautiful space. The Pura Yoga class itself was wonderful! We went through a flow and the instructor was great about allowing everyone to modify any movement to fit their practice. I grabbed a schedule and may check out some of the other yoga classes being offered at Nu Movement. I had a great experience at Nu Movement and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in yoga! read more

I am a newbie when it comes to yoga. NM is an intimate studio filled with beautiful art that's always changing. The studio is bright, well lit, and has 2 large mirrors. The studio fits about 15 people comfortably. The location is tucked away in the back if you are on University. I prefer to take Atlantic, the parking is right there. If you get there a little early, you will have to wait outside until the previous class is over. I've taken a couple of yoga classes with Joanna. Joanna is very friendly and lets you go at your own pace. I even won 5 complimentary classes with Joanna. I've also taken a barre class with Katie. I definitely felt the burn during the class, but I loved it. The classes here are very enjoyable. NM lists their classes on their website and on Facebook. The floors are heated! There's also a station for complimentary tea. The prop room is filled with; bolsters, blankets, blocks, yoga mats, and straps. No extra charge for using one of their yoga mats, score! The bathroom is next door to the prop room, convenient. read more

Absolutley loved this cute little studio. I took some of my friends who have never done yoga or pilates here and the instructor was great. She came around making sure everyone was stretching correctly to make sure we felt it in the right places. Since its a lot of floor work she stood most the time to demonstrate the moves so we could see her better which I really appreciated. They also provide you with mats and stretching circles as well which was nice for my friends who this was their first time. The place is slightly tricky to find only because its not actually a big sign on university ave. Its easier to see if you go one street over. But luckily there are signs that direct you from university street to the back of the building where the place is. If i found it you will find it! Highly recommend this place! read more

I've been to Nu Movement twice now and am enjoying it enough to have invested in the 10-class pass. My first experience was for a gong bath back in Dec. I had been previously enjoying attending monthly gong baths through the kundalini yoga studio where I was practicing, but the instructor left the area. The gong bath here was the same physical/aural experience, only marred by the fact that the door to the studio does not have any weather blocking, so once you settle in, if the door opens, and it's winter (i.e. Dec), there is a stiff breeze! Also, the night I attended I dropped in to see if there was space, even though it was recommended that you book online to reserve a spot, since spots were limited. The instructor however continued to allow other people to join us, so we were very crowded. For a gong bath this is not really a big deal because you are in the dark, not moving, just lying there listening, but it did make for a small challenge getting everyone situated before we could begin. My second experience was for a $5 Fitness Friday event where we got to experience the barre. I have never taken a ballet-style dance class before and had never tried the barre, though I regularly do squats and lunges and yoga. The one-hour intro class was tremendously challenging for me, but the instructor was excellent. We did a variety of postures/moves using the bar (there were only about 10 of us in the session, so it was perfect) and also did some ab work on the mat. I loved it but am not sure I would sign up for a full session....but what a great value, and a great idea to allow potential students to get to try something new before committing! I'm looking forward to using my class pass for yoga classes soon...especially the Sunday evening yoga session which is calling my name.....now if I can just be in town on a Sunday.... read more

I went to Nu Movement first with a Yelp Event: PiYo live with Jenni. Since then, I have also attended a few yoga classes, and other events. The studio is smaller, but it is a beautiful open space, with local art featured on the walls. The floor can be heated for classes, and they have all of the props needed for restorative yoga. I think that all of the instructors are genuinely good people. They do a wonderful job with letting the public know when classes and events are being offered on their social media outlets. Some of the things that the manager and instructors come up with are awesome. They started a yoga class for kids, and they are having an event on Valentine's Day for couples yoga. Joanna offered a class on Thanksgiving Day that was donation-based (school supplies) to go to a local charity. Register for classes online, and you can respond to events on facebook too. They have tea for after yoga, and often offer macrobars as a post work-out snack. I am all for what this business is about: staying healthy physically and mentally. The instructors are beautiful people who remind you to take care of yourself. read more

I had such an amazing experience this morning with the 6am, 90 min, yoga + meditation + book writing/journaling session. Yogi Liza is a complete joy and leads a very focused, balanced, and zen class! I'm marking this as a favorite for my future business trips here since I'm in Rochester a few times a year. I dropped in for a Yelp sponsored free event at Nu Movement, and I was very impressed. I like that it is a co-op, which each teacher charging what they think is fair for their class, or even just asking that patrons pay what they think the class is worth. I did the PiYo class, which mixed Pilates and Yoga movements for an all over body workout. The teacher was energetic and motivating and I liked that it's a small space, so you can easily get personal attention if you need it. I definitely plan on returning to try out their other classes! read more

I am a noob when it comes to Yoga. I am completely inflexible and I have zero balance - so why not try yoga, right?! I decided to start slow and did the Monday evening Candlelight Yoga class which is a mix of restorative/relaxing poses with some intro yoga poses to stretch. Joanna was my instructor and she was amazing. The class had about 7 women and you could tell all of them were pretty fit and had done this sort of thing before - but I never felt self conscious. Through some of the poses I struggled but Joanna was sure to make me feel comfortable and told me that holding the wall - to not fall on my ass - was ok. I left feeling invigorated and mentally stronger. I plan to go every Monday in the hopes that I will start to become more flexible and become more centered. Will I ever be a true yogi? Doubtful but mindfulness sometimes is better for some. read more

NU movement is a charming little studio. Parking can be a little difficult, so I would recommend arriving 10-15 minutes prior to a class as they do share a lot with other businesses. I do love the ever changing art displayed at NU movement, as a yogi, my only critique of this is it leaves little to no room for any wall work, like handstand at the wall, or wall sits for core work etc. The studio is bright and feels welcoming. I highly recommend Jenn's thursday night class at 6:45-vinyasa yoga with essential oils it is amazing as is Jenn! read more

The studio has a great dance floor that is surrounded by art from local artists using different materials to express themselves. Other instructors also utilize this space for things like yoga.
