Newcastle is a gorgeous little seaside town that attracts a lot of traffic when the weather's good…read more I was there for the first time since I was a kid a few weeks ago, and while I was there, I called into Maud's for a cheeky little serving of Pooh Bear ice cream. The cafe is huge. There's loads of seating indoors and then also some outdoor, overlooking the water (which is lovely if you're lucky enough to get a good day!) They also do sandwiches and hot food, so it's usually packed to the rafters with residents and tourists alike getting fed, or cooling down with the best ice cream Northern Ireland has to offer.

I know what you are thinking, and yes I have reviewed Mauds Ice Cream parlours before, but this…read moretime it is a little different. Let me set the scene. After a impromptu camping trip to the Mourne mountains that included 9 lads, copious amounts of alcohol and 7 sleeping bags we needed some serious refuelling. Wondering into Newcastle town centre looking particularly bedraggled we were mountain men on a mission. The mission was to find somewhere to eat and the more greasy the food the better. But we also wanted somewhere we knew and that we could trust to deliver quality. Because a rogue meal could tip us over the edge. Swaying through the town centre suggestions were being thrown around willy nilly, "Subway?" "No, too Healthy!" What about KFC?" "Not open!" "What about Mauds?" "Do they do food or just ice cream?" "They do a greasy fry and a cup of tea for £4.75!" "Right that's sold it!" So we headed for Mauds café, it was a sunny day and the place was jam packed full of breakfast diners, we thought we would struggle for a spot but were directed to the outdoor decking. This was exactly what we needed to freshen us up, sea breeze, greasy sausages, bacon and enough fried bread to soak up the alcohol still sloshing around in our bellies. At £4.75 this was an absolute bargain, I would have paid that alone for the view from the outdoor decking. Mountains to your right and the Irish Sea to your left with Newcastle town centre in the middle. The hangover soon cleared up and we were back on our way. The staff were kind and comforting taking into account our state, there were even rumours Maud herself was working!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I would have liked some fruit as a topping option. Wow. It's true though. It would have been nice if there was some tables inside. And also, the place seemed to have been ransacked, and could have done with a good deep cleaning (around the window especially) and maybe a new lick of paint. Regardless, the staff did well taking orders and getting folks what they wanted. The ice cream was good.

The queue was huge but from what I had heard about this place it was to be expected. But in fairness to the staff the queue moved pretty quick considering. I looked at the giant sundae type things they had on the wall. There was one which was called a Snicker Bocker Glory. It sounded incredible, indulgent and so wrong. I had to have it. I was with my cousin and her young daughter and I have to say the staff are pretty amazing. Super patient with everyone including the indecisive chislers. I got my Snicker Bocker Glory which had fresh whipped ice cream, Snickers ice cream, caramel sauce and bits of Snickers going through it. I have to say I was left pretty underwhelmed. I thought the plain whipped ice cream which seems to be their staple was pretty bland. The Snickers ice cream was again not what it should be. I think I had maybe 6 or 7 spoonfuls until I actually gave up. Maybe an off day for the ice cream makers? I dunno. But based on what I got I probably wont be back. The 3 would probably be a 2 if it weren't for the deadly staff, they really are great.

My friends told me about it and I feel compelled to share the good news! So as the name suggests, it is a milkshake bar... and they also serve the odd cupcake. You can take out, or there are a few seats for sitting in. The decor is 50's diner style, bright pastel colours and really fun. But the main draw is the amazing milkshakes. They serve every kind you can imagine, blended up with good quality icecream and milk (none of that horrible flavouring added to milk lark). The menu is vast, so to take the pressure off deciding, they have a selection of house specials like the Elvis (peanut butter, chocolate and banana anyone?!) Or you can just opt for your favourite chocolate bar, blended up with icecream, which is what I did. I chose the Boost... it was delicious. Straight after I had finished, I wanted another one. I must warn you that once you have visited Got Milkshake? you will quickly become addicted! Ok, so the idea may be a bit gimmicky and I'm not sure how long their idea will remain unique, but the milkshakes are truely delicious and the price is pretty reasonable too - £2.60 for a regular, £3 for a large. The setting is great, right in the heart of Stranmillis village so a handy pittstop after a day of sunbathing in Botanic Gardens, or as a nice end to a meal. Like most good things in life, the milkshake bar is probably best in moderation. But great for a treat, a fun date, or the ultimate hangover cure. Enjoy!

It also sells cupcakes, and I am very well versed in the art of cupcakes! The cupcake I got the other day had ball bearings on it, which I love (I mean, it's edible metal!) Got Milkshake is quite a cute little cafe, with a 1950s vibe about it. It's really small though, so there are only a few tables in it. I couldn't really imagine sitting there for ages, so for me, it's more a get it and go place. The milkshakes themselves were popular with my friends though, and with so many ingredients on offer, you can have all kinds of weird and wonderful combinations (Wham bar milkshake anyone?)

I ordered through a hatch to a face I couldn't see, just a voice, as the cafe seemed closed to sitting inside. The flat white was one of the best I've had. I must add that my 5 stars are based on just on one single coffee on a first visit standing on a street, on what turned out to be one of the hottest days we've ever had in Northern Ireland, 29c. It is unheard off - for the last 8 weeks we've averaged about 16c and usually cloudy every day. The service was swift too, the coffee seemed to appear in a nanosecond. The cup was biodegradable and the plastic lid recycle able. So while it's only a delicious coffee - to make coffee this good shows a passion and a love of food. I was staying in the Slieve Donard hotel. They had the gall to serve the worst coffee and worst breakfast food my family have had served up in a very long time - this was the view of 7 of us. The hotel's rotten 'free breakfast' was provided on foot of having paid £185 a night for a double room for two people (or twice the price of the hard rock hotel London centre in a current deal). I noted that most Donard hotel coffees were priced at £4 but having had their coffee offering at breakfast like their lousy food, I thought never again.

They were packed with people and have a fair amount of options regarding coffees and teas as well as different pastries and desserts. I ended up getting a san Pellegrino can and my fiancé ended up getting a coffee drink. We split one of the desserts and they where really good. The staff here was very friendly and they we busy too. It seemed like a good place to stop for a drink or to meet up with some friends. I bet if you needed to work remotely you could probably sit at a table order a few drinks and be good to go for a while.
