Awesome record, tape and VHS store. Organized and a nice selection. If you're looking for musica obscura (I totally made that up) it was a treasure trove. Prices were good in used and weird. Higher prices on sealed records- but that's expected as a new generation is now collecting! My son is heading back tomorrow to buy more! read more

My husband used to spend hours in Nuggets while living near by in his college years. We are glad it's still around and we were excited to check it out, him to revisit it and myself to discover it. Unfortunately, now it's overpriced, it has old, dusty (literally) merchandise, pretty dead in there when we stopped in. We came back on a Sunday to revisit since we were walking in the area, but unfortunately it was closed. They close early, at 5 pm on Sundays. Not opened on Mondays. Too bad, customer service is OK, but it's hard to find something affordable and in decent shape to get. read more

I just don't stop here as often as I should. This not some boutique store with a couple hundred records at prohibitive prices, rather this is an amazing store with thousands of records - many of them rare and hard to find - at (what I think are) reasonable prices. While the feel of the place may seem "old," (they've been around since 1978!) there's plenty of new items, and the stock can rotate pretty quickly as there are many diggers who come through on the regular. Name the genre, and you're likely to find it pretty quickly, and if not, Stuart or Andrea can find it for you. I tend to collect Christmas-themed music, and it's always kept out and available throughout the year. But I also gravitate to jazz and local rock, and Nuggets has both, in quantity and in quality. I always walk out with a gem, and feel like I got a good deal on it. The only caveats are, do not go looking to negotiate on prices, it's just not going to happen, and don't expect to stop by on Mondays - it's the one day it's closed. read more

Nuggets is the worst record store in the greater boston area. Everything is dirty, overpriced, and the selection is honestly garbage. I've gone maybe 10 times over the last 2 years and i swear i see the same 200 records in the jazz section. Nothing ever changes. NOT WORTH THE TRIP. read more

Yes, Nuggets is a Boston institution and I treat it as such. However, so much more of this place could be better than it currently is and I leave with an unfulfilled feeling when leaving. I get that record stores get a ton of constant new inventory and would probably need to hire 2-3 full time employees just to catalog it all and price accordingly but I still don't get why all of them feel like a hoarders attic. I'd say, 75% of what Nuggets actually has in stock isn't even up for sale and you aren't allowed to go through the vast collections sitting underneath those already priced and ready for purchase. Why not let me see what you have that I MIGHT purchase to increase overall sales? You could look it up as it is brought to the counter and price it then. They must lose lots of business just for this reason alone and it's quite sad. A huge strike and pet peeve of mine for record stores is not having a listening area for customers. Much of what is for sale is super obscure and even though I have an interest in the genre that it is in, I don't want to waste my money on something that I'll hate once I have it home. The opposite holds true for those I was like, "meh, this probably isn't that good" until you get it home and are blown away by that 70's psych rock track nobody ever heard of but is now one of your favorites. I asked the owner and he said they have issues with people stealing the needles. If that's the case, how about you invest in some wireless cameras and tell people they are being monitored 24/7 as a deterrent? With my last visit, I walked out of here with about five pieces of vinyl and $20 spent. That sounds like a good deal but I didn't buy any of the "name brand" bands I may have been going in for because to me, many were a bit overpriced. I wanted something like The Who's second album but when it's $40, I'm less likely to plunk down money on it, especially without being able to listen to it first. Other stores in the area may price the same album at $25-35, as a comparison. I'll still return and buy artists I'm both familiar with and are priced accordingly. But seriously, the $20 I spent could have turned into $50 if I just had a place to hear it first. And that added $30 would add up over hundreds of transactions a year, making those stolen needles much easier to replace. read more

Since nuggets usually closes at 6 or 7 or something - I'm usually rushing by as it closes on my way to dinner. One fateful day, after an early dinner and drinks, i saw that, at 8pm, the store was still open. Wandering around, we were greated by rows of DVDs CDs Records, VHS tapes from every genre and era imaginable. Okay, there weren't any wax cylinders, so maybe not EVERY genre. And that is how I ended up with the entire Kaiser Chiefs collection. Think used CDs, but all in immaculate condition (according to the owner, and my limited sampling). You flip through the album covers in plastic containers, and bring up your selection to the clerk, who finds the CDs for you, puts them in a new jewel case along with the cd. The ones I looked at were between 2 and 6 bucks. It is VERY hit or miss, so if you have a good memory (unlike me) for band names, you will undoubtedly find some real steals. If you lack impulse control, the low price point may have you walking out with an odd assortment. This place really should be open later - but I'm glad its not - because i would develop a strange collection of finds after wandering out of lower depths. read more

Keep everything in alphabetical order! Nuggets is a hoarder's paradise...it is stocked to the gills with media and they have a roped off section in the back with even more stuff. As you walk through the vast store marveling at the CDs, DVDs, tapes, and records, you are reminded at every turn to keep everything in proper order. The pricing looked fair enough but I'm not in the market for a Gordon Lightfoot LP or a Cagney & Lacey DVD, so maybe the pricing is great, maybe it's terrible, who knows. What I need to know is, how does this place make any real money to stay in business, esp. in such a nice area of Boston? Also, given the lack of patrons, if I owned this shop I would buy a couple cans of paint, some Pledge, and would clean it up a bit. That's just me though. A two and a half hour drive to this place was disappointing. There was a vast selection, but you'll need a hazmat suit and gloves while there, and hand sanitizer when you're done. The records are dirty. My fingers were black. And the condition of the records pretty terrible. I hate to give negative reviews but I appreciate it when people treat music and LPs with care. In a town that has lost many of its great record stores (Mars, Second Comings, Looney Tunes, etc.), Nuggets is one of the last shops still worth going to. Unlike many of the other stores, it's not just rows and rows of filler. I always come away from here with a couple of good finds and reasonably-priced ones too. The guy who runs the shop is also super nice and isn't afraid to chat you up about the record you're looking at. I hope he and the shop still have many years ahead. Must be pretty hard to keep going in this day and age, especially in a city that has lost so much of its personality. read more

If you're looking for new records this isn't a good place for it, plenty of old relics if you're into that. I felt like the selection of indie music was extremely scarce. Custom service was not bad but selection and over all interior reminded me more of a thrift store. read more

This store has such a great collection of rock LPs and a pretty impressive jazz section too. It has an okay-sized country section, but i didn't really go digging through there. It's very fairly priced, especially for its area in Boston. However, if you're looking for modern stuff - don't go here. I don't mind as the old stuff sounds better to me. Also, don't expect perfect condition from every vinyl. It is a used record store so this should be expected. I can't say much for the condition of other medias as I didn't buy any, but from looks alone they seemed pretty alright. Overall, this is a great place for any rock or jazz lovers. Especially if you like the lesser-known stuff (it's much cheaper). read more

Whenever I think I don't really miss Boston, I let my mind roll back to some of the happiest moments of my teenage years-- rummaging through the racks of records at the once-bountiful used record stores in the Boston area--and the nostalgia kicks in. Yes, I said RECORDS. No, I'm not THAT fucking old, but I'm old enough to have spent $350 on my first cd player in the late 80s, and to remember when most cds cost at least eighteen bucks and came in very environmentally unfriendly packaging. Back when cds first came out, the rich folks traded in their vinyl for the newfangled digital things, and kids like me took advantage of the huge influx of inventory at places like Nuggets, Disc Diggers, Looney Tunes, Mystery Train (Mystery Train was particularly awesome because they actually sold Dead bootlegs behind the counter, but you had to keep it on the DL). For the price of one cd, I could leave the store with seven or eight record albums. I had a chat with the original owner of Nuggets the last time I was in Boston. Apparently all of the aforementioned used music stores have gone out of business, thanks in part to iTunes and Amazon. Despite his amazing inventory and my desire to stay for hours (he was just about to close when I got there), he did not seem optimistic about the future of his business. "I hope I don't have to go and get a real job soon," he said. "Ugh. Real jobs," I sighed, and we both shook our long-haired heads in dirty hippie resignation. Then he rang up my copy of Dick's Picks Volume V (on cd, *sigh* of course), the one with the Oakland Arena December '79 show and that killer Estimated on disc two that, despite my heavy, heady Boston nostalgia, always seems to remind me that I love California, the "prophet on the burning shore" just a little bit more. Nuggets is a classic used CD store: it looks like it was put together by stoned 9th-graders in woodshop and the dudes who work there have been rockin' the same haircut since 1992. And it's not very well-organized. And there's a swingy door into the main store, just like in a saloon in the Old West! Except shorter. But still, that's awesome. And there are signs all over the place warning you not to steal the empty CD sleeves. Who does that? Clearly some people do, because many used CD stores have signs warning you how stupid that is. Maybe people bring the CD cover home and put it in their collection to make it look like they're cool enough to have that album, and then they tell people that they just loaned it to a friend. I guess that would be a good idea if you were hitting on a girl who's impressed by a good CD collection, but you're poor. Selection is good to very good, and this is the only place in town where you will get lucky if you really want that Color Me Badd album and you think it should be classified under Rap. Prices are $6 to $12, averaging around $8, which is good. I BOUGHT: Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom ($10). Not all that rare a find, but a brilliant album - I think of it as Elvis's Pet Sounds - and my Elvis Costello collection needed deepening. read more

Nuggets 10 years ago - easily 4 stars. Nuggets today - 2 stars is generous. The second star is there merely because I'm happy to see that they've managed to stay in business. All I can say is that they must either own their space or someone signed a LONG lease a few years back. Somehow, they're still here. As is their stock, most of it appearing to have spent the last 10 years right where it is. Much of the vinyl is stuff you'd commonly find at flea markets and yard sales - dog-eared copies of million-selling but now mostly irrelevant 70's-80's rock and pop titles. But hey, if you ever need a Boz Scaggs record in rough shape, Nuggets has you covered. As a Smiths fan, one way I always guage record stores is whether they have any Smiths/Morrissey in stock, and if so, what they've got, what condition, and at what price? Why The Smiths? They're a good indicator of how well a store keeps up with demand, as Smiths records are highly collectible and sell quickly when priced fairly. However, should you manage to find the Smiths section at Nuggets, you'll likely find either an empty slot or a mis-filed Patti Smith record. You might have slightly better luck looking in The Jam section, that is if you're looking for old Style Council 12" singles. The bargain CD's in the back are still a good deal at $2, and Nuggets is one of the few places still around to find affordable used CD's. However, the selection is unpredictable and many discs are promo copies, so if you're looking for a specific album you're probably out of luck. I hate to say it, but when it comes to killing time in Kenmore Square, you're almost better of in the BU bookstore/Barnes & Noble across the street. Coming into Nuggets just makes me depressed that it's no longer a happening place full of cool records and cheap CD's staffed by members of cool local rock bands. read more

Possibly The worst record store in the United States. Spent $20 on an Uber to get there based on yelp ratings. The rock section had more dividers with band names than actual albums. The albums they did have were in piss poor condition and grossly overpriced. They have three rows of new arrivals that were in better condition but those were marked up even more Egregiously. I've been to tons of used vinyl record stores from San Fran to Chicago to NYC...so trust me when I say avoid this place . The best way to describe it is estate sale quality and quantity. read more

I love the sign that says "Respect the alphabet".. because without that.. how would you find anything in here? I'm not gonna lie, Nuggets sort of reminds of this place I volunteered at (the woman was a hoarder and had a shizzle load of stuff). Check out the cassette tapes and video collection. Whaaaaa? I initially walked in because I saw Ken Burns' Jazz: The Story of American Music box set outside on display. It was selling for $20 less than the list price.. so I figured why not stop into the store for a gander. The jazz section seemed pretty decent but I didn't linger because I wasn't planning on buying anything. Then I hit the comedy vinyls. Richard Pryor for $5? You kidding me? Is that legal? Should anything of his be $5? Then I stumbled on Eric Bogosian for like $12 or 13.. so I went ahead and bought that too. I've been reading Bogosian for years, but have never seen or even heard him do his stuff. I'm working on some new material and he's a definite inspiration. There are some viewpoints I personally disagree with, but I love the way he gets inside his character's heads and totally commits. The way I see it, it was an educational buy. The guy at the counter was nice. He took out the records to show me they were in really great condition before ringing me up. I'll definitely stop by again when I'm in the area.. and have some punch in the wallet. Nuggets is one of the few survivors of the BU money stomping that has 'redeveloped' Kenmore Square. This shop is as old school Boston music scene as can be. There is a certain Zen to used CD shopping that can be achieved in the right shop. You won't attain this state of clear mind - cheap ass shopping at Cd-Spins but you might in a dusty, dank, actually quite decrepit shop like Nuggets. You have to get in there, dig through the unorganized stuff, lose your expectations and just find stuff on your 'Crap, I forgot I wanted this like 3 years ago' list. And, honestly how often can you walk into a shop and find more than 1 CD on your list of things to hunt for? Yeah. That's why I shop at Nuggets. read more

Very solid collection, Aerosmith and the Stones playing overhead, and relatively helpful staff. A bit overpriced for the quality of a lot of the vinyl, but coming from Ohio perhaps I'm just used to midwestern pricing. Nuggets is great for used CD shopping when I have the patience to sift and sift. Used CD stores always have a lot of crap, and I have to be in the right mood for the hunt. Last summer, I found a gem: Throbbing Gristle. I brought it to the cashier and he said, "You know what I say about people who buy Throbbing Gristle CDs? You must be a real weirdo." Great selection of vinyl, often don't have what I'm looking for on CD, but the staff is great in helping you find it. Pretty decent blues selection, too, which is hard to find around these parts. This is probably one of the best places to go for vinyl in this area. You're going to find more classic vinyl than newer stuff here, so if you're a DJ or just looking for some hip-hop or techno vinyl you're probably better off looking elsewhere. Their CD selection is a bit unorganized, but digging through it can sometimes be rewarding. Despite how unorganized and sloppy it may look, you can find some really decent stuff in there if you're someone with eclectic taste in music. Prices are usually always good. If you're as big of a fan of digging through records and CDs as I am, definitely give this place a look. read more

Pretty good record store right in the middle of Boston. Came here almost two years ago after visiting Fenway Park, literally a stone's throw away from the place. It's a massively huge place compared to the venerable stops in NYC. I bought a couple of good solid records here. I got a beat up copy of Metallica's Master of Puppets for 3 bucks, but plays well on my turntable. Yet, I also got the vintage Wrestling Album for a whopping 12 dollars. Meh on the pricing of the other records, but this place is well-stocked and a good place to find the standards. Overall, it's a good experience. If I'm ever in Boston, I'll make sure to stop by here each time. read more

The final stop on my Spring Cleaning tour. By this point I was sick of dragging around my stupid-ghetto rollon suitcase (which I promptly left in a trash can right outside this place). The owner(s? married couple maybe?) were really nice but cautioned they'd likely not be able to take very many of my CDs due to the spike in people trying to sell their things (economy...). If I ever WAS an avid music person - or heck, even if I wasn't - I'd come in here to browse around. They clearly had way more selection than Looney, and it was much more condusive to spend time in - not super narrow, not claustophobic. In the end, they only took a couple of CDs and I left the rest there because they said they could use the jewel cases (I also have another stack of jewel cases I'll take over next time I'm in the area). So maybe not the best place to go sell your CDs, but instead, go buy the ones that everyone already sold. read more

Nuggets definitely gives off the impression of a long-standing record store when one walks in, for the place is huge and chock full of assorted dusty merchandise. These guys have everything that one may or may not think of: cds, vinyl, dvds, concert dvds, posters, and even adult dvds. Those movies have music in them, right? I didn't get a chance to look through the vinyl, but the cd section was quite comprehensive. They have a section divider for nearly every well known band, but many sections are lacking any cds. I'm not sure if the owners of music stores actively seek out filling in these gaps, but it can be a little frustrating not having anything to sort through when browsing. The prices are pretty good for used cds at $6-7, and one can even get a few sealed discs for as low as $6. There's an extensive $2 cd section with just piles of music in the back of the store. One can find quite a few fun ones in there, though if you're a stickler for unmarked discs, somebody unfortunately put a black 'X' on the front cover of every $2 album. Real bummer if you care about that stuff. However, if you're just there for discovering new music then that's a great section to sift through. I found the staff at Nuggets to be very friendly, laid back, and easy to chat with. I was asked a few times if I had any questions, but those inquiries came across casually so I didn't feel hounded like one might feel at some department stores. With the nice staff and the vast array of stuff to look through, one can really spend a few hours here just poking around. Great place to pop by if you get a chance. read more

This record store is absolutely ridiculous, in a good way. It's packed to the gills with old records spanning all genres. What really sets this store apart from others in the Boston area are the rare pressings and vinyls you can find here. From autographs to test pressings and hard to find first pressings, you're guaranteed to stumble upon something awesome. Infrequently found? Sure. Prices can be a bit north of expectations from time to time, but that's okay. A pretty cool little dive of a record store, I found myself trapped in Nuggets for the better part of an hour after skimming through the old hip-hop records. It's basically an awesome trip back in time because you find all these old records and releases with songs you love and you can't help but love it. At least, I couldn't. Their record selectin is IMMENSE (imo...some people may find this a small collection, but I don't have much experience with record stores). Many of the records were selling between $3 and $6 with the rare Michael Jackson albums and similar items reaching as high as $25. I can't comment on the QUALITY of the vinyl in this store, but the selection is certainly appreciable. Their organization system definitely follows the "Rock is the best, then Jazz is pretty cool, then everyone else can fill in around that" school of thought. So for the classic rock fan, this place is pretty great. Even hip-hop fans will eventually find something cool in here, even if it takes a while. I can't say much for the staff since I didn't want to buy anything and thus didn't speak to anyone, but they sell record players apparently. This would be a great starting point for someone looking to start a collection of classic vinyl, I can say that for certain. I'm always a bit overwhelmed by record stores. This is not a bad thing, usually it's exciting! But it does come as an inconvenience to me when I'm in search of specific piece of media. That's why I was delighted by the efficiency by which the guy at the desk took a request, scanned through the cds in the back, and found two wonderful cds that I had scoured most of Boston in search of. The friends I brought with me all found everything they were looking for (and some things they hadn't even thought of) too! Finally, I appreciate the fact that they offered hand sanitizer at a time like this. read more

Hmm. This place has its ups and downs for used vinyl. I've had nice days here, but at least 50% of the stock has been in the same bins for 9+ years here which is how long I've been stopping in. I seriously remember certain things from when I was a freshman in college that have not moved since then. They DO get good records in, but I've also experienced dry-spells where it seems like nothing new comes onto the floor at the store for several months. I know they do a lot of ebay auctions and I'm sure that's where a lot of stuff goes, and frankly I've never looked at the DVDs or CDs so maybe there's a lot of turnover there. When they do have good records the main problem I've had is that condition is completely disregarded when pricing. I've seen collections come in where some records are totally beat and others look brand new and they get priced the same. I'd say this place is worth a look, but they can be seriously frustrating. Also weird sidenote, there's a huge box of used porno movies on the counter, which I always forget about, and then do a triple take when I see them. read more
