This was the first gay bar I've ever been to, and it was so much fun. I came with a group of people from work after one person wanted to go here. The crowd was so friendly, and the happy hour was great. Buy one drink, get one free (and after 8pm)? Yes, please! The only downside was probably how crowded it was (obviously a well-liked place), and so, I could barely move around, but everyone was so polite when he/she tried to pass by our group. read more

Only lost a star for the manager's policy on closing early with smaller crowds. This is one of my new favorite spots in DC. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of socialization and sophistication. The decor is unique yet simple, and the drinks are always up to par (unlike a few places who insist on under pouring). Having been a bartender for a few years back in Cali, I know how important a friendly staff plays into a successful business, and Number Nine goes above-and-beyond with their employees. Matt is usually located downstairs, swamped by people anxious for their alcohol, but he is always relaxed and personable with customers. Another bartender to look for is Eric who I have only met upstairs, but he's very friendly and always smiling. Number Nine's HH is the best too: 5-9pm buy one get one free?! can't beat it. Once I get off work, I'm usually found relaxing with a drink in hand and a ticket for another that is to follow. Long story short: LOVE. read more

I really liked this place because there was a very eclectic group of people. Initially, I thought the drinks were expensive until I realized that when you buy a drink, you are given a ticket to get another of the same drink "free." Seating lined the walls so it was easy to move inside and get to the bar. Despite how busy it was, the bartender was very nice, not rude and short. I never made it to the upstairs part, but I will definitely explore on my return visit. read more

Everyone needs a "home away from home" bar while on the road, right? Well... maybe alchies like me do. Keep the judgement to yourself. In any case... #9 was that bar for me. I first discovered #9 on my first night in DC, which was a Friday. It was a zoo in there. Both levels were filled with shoulder-to-shoulder people doing their S&M (stand & model) thing while listening to trite Top 40 songs and sipping overpriced specialty cocktails. It seemed a bit too West Hollywood for my taste. The subsequent visits were on weekday nights, when the vibe is much more relaxed -- in other words, more up my alley. 2-for-1 drink specials meant gin-and-sodas that were surprisingly affordable in an expensive city like DC. The friendly bartenders made smalltalk about the finer points of east coast vs. west coast drag culture. Most importantly, there was actually a place to sit. There's people-watching galore at #9. I could swear I saw a Congressman slipping benjamins into the back pocket of a rentboy and then discreetly walking out with him. Or it might've all been my imagination. Perception is a funny thing. Rudest bartender I have ever experienced in my life. We walked up to the serving station closest to the door on the first level, and the bartender looked us right in the eye and walked away and started talking to his coworker. I refuse to spend my money here. You might be able to open a hip bar and get by giving attitude to your customers for a while but if you don't change your ways eventually another hip bar will open nearby and you'll be history. read more

I travel to DC a lot of times during the year. This place has your typical mixed crowd. The door staff are great, as are most of the bartender though those working behind the bar need to consider being a little more social and friendly to customers. Upper bar staff was great on my last visit Easter Sunday Night, but the lower bar had a bartender who refused to even crack a smile, say hello or thank you for tipping him. read more

Normally I really like visiting this bar when visiting from Denver. Stood at the order station for awhile waiting to be served. The bartender was talking to others and this went on for ten minutes. Ok, I got a little upset, but wrote it off. Went to cash out after our 2nd drink of the whole evening and received the same treatment. Bartender talking to the same guys! Thank you Ed Bailey and John Guggenmos for creating another great destination... no a new experience. With the departure several years ago of Titan/Ramrod, Hamburger Mary's/Dakota Cowgirl and then Halo/MOVA just last year, those of us who live in the neighborhood felt quite a sense of loss. You have arrived and saved the day! As soon as you arrive you can see through the window what a welcoming and warm yet chic environment has been created. You walk in the door and you feel it, hear it and experience it. Whether you want to sit or stand you are set. Now let's talk about the drink menu... full-service bar - of course - and quite the fantastic menu of specialty drinks several that include homemade infused flavored syrups. I especially love that Number 9 is going to keep it simple... long happy hour (5pm - 9pm) including 2 for 1 drinks and no calendar of nightly specials or activities to keep up with. Two friends and I went to happy hour here yesterday. It's down the street from her apartment and they 2 for 1 drink specials sounded nice. Plus, usually gay bars are nice to go to when you're hanging with the girls and don't feel like getting hit on. Unfortunately this place was less than stellar. The bartender was not at all personable. He never smiled and didn't speak other than to ask what we wanted and to give us our total. When we finished our drinks and went back to order our free one, he asked us for our "tickets." Which he had never given us, or told us about. But apparently when you buy your first drink, you should get a ticket. Now, not even 20 minutes had passed. There were 30 people in the bar at the most. Plus we were sitting right in front of him the whole time. He remembered us. He knew we hadn't gotten our free drink. And even if he didn't know, he should have given us the benefit of the doubt, or given us a half price drink. Something. He's a bartender, I know he could have done something. I don't know whether he was just a crappy bartender or if it was because we were straight, but we will never be going back. The one redeeming quality was the drinks. I ordered the Lavendar Lemon drop, which I recommend passing up, it was like a straight shot of vodka. But my friends ordered mojitos, which they said were quite nice. read more

I have gone to Number Nine infrequently for the past several years. This year, I have been going more often. I normally have a good time and the service is usually fair. This past Saturday, a good friend and I went there to have drinks after dinner. As usual I bought drinks. I normally buy two to three drinks when I go there and when I treat friends, I end up spending at least $100 dollars. On Saturday, my friend and I were on drink two. We were standing upstairs in front of the staircase, about 50 feet from the restroom area. We were able to stand and talk and rest our drinks on a ledge connected to the staircase. While me and my friend were chatting, there was a Number Nine employee (not sure what his title is) who walked by several times picking up supposedly empty glasses. One particular time, this guy asked me and my friend if were still drinking our drinks. We said "YES." A few minutes later, this same employee came back and took our drinks anyway. We were NOT even halfway done with those drinks that costed at least $10 a piece. My friend went and bought us two more drinks. When I saw this employee walk by again, I called him over and asked what his name was. He told me his name was Alec. I explained to him that he had taken our drinks when we were not finished. He asked if I saw him take our drinks. My friend told him "yes, we did." Alec rebutted "Don't give me attitude." I then told him that I was going to let management know. Alex walked off. He came back to me after a few minutes and said "My manager knows," (with major attitude)and walked off. I was floored at how dismissive and rude employee Alec was to me and my friend. And if he was telling the truth about Number Nine's management--shame on them! I have heard rumors about racial discrimination at Number Nine before, but I have never experienced it. I cannot say that Alec's treatment of us was because of the color of our skin, but I can say he was very rude and dismissive. This not may not serve justice for me and my buddy, but I will NOT be spending another coin at Number Nine and I will not recommend it as a nice place to grab drinks at. Cool, crisp, classy, clean. The management/owners of every other gay bar in this city need to take a field trip here. The two-for-one drink specials are serious pours and apply to anything you can think to order, from top shelf to BudLite. The interior design is so high end as to be almost intimidating, especially if one has been frequenting a smelly skank-hole like the Green Lantern. There's even a doorman greeting patrons arriving for happy hour. The bartenders are friendly yet highly professional; everyone is made welcome and treated like a guest. The clientele is upscale and mannerly. Excellent venue to jump start a real date, or to bring out of town visitors. read more

I have been wanting to check this place out since the end of summer when I would see people enjoying their cocktails on the sidewalk furniture. We finally got around to coming in on a Friday night to get the 2 for 1 drink deal. The place was packed, which was to be expected. I was a little disappointed with the vibe for the mood we were in; it wasn't the party atmosphere we were looking for, but that's okay, now we know what to expect. Also, they used a lot of crushed ice in our cocktails, so not sure how much 'drink' we actually got, but hey you get 2 for the price of 1, so I can forgive. Before we left, someone mentioned to us that there was also an upstairs to this place, but we didn't end up seeing it while we were there. Will check it out again and try the upstairs. read more

Spent a chill Saturday evening here a few weeks ago. Would have walked right past if I wasn't meeting friends there. The vibe was awesome, the people were friendly, and the bartenders were like wizards. I drank some insanely tasty cocktails, and the best part was the happy hour two-for-one pricing - even on a Saturday night! Awesomeness. This place is pretty spiffy. The music is fun and relaxed but not to dull or loud. You can feel the energy when you walk in and the staff is super friendly. Great drinks. I personally love the mojito! There the best in town. Tables for two and great lighting. Very clean (even the bathrooms) Perfect for a first date or to catch up with friends after work. Love the way the placed looked! Bartenders were sharp and remembered who I was and my drink.
