Dr. Lane is an exceptional eye doctor. I truly believe that his detailed testing, diagnosis and consulting has saved many, many people from blindness or near blindness. He is one of few eye doctors who look into your eyes via excellent equipment and can catch not only issues with your eyes but other diseases before you or your GP knows you are sick. Many eye diseases are neurodegenerative so catching eye issues early and coaching someone to stop progression through proven nutrition and supplements will also help people fend diseases like dementia, MS, etc. as well as blindness. Dr. Lane is also kind and patient in coaching patients to do all of the right things to have healthy eyes, mind and body. The key is that patients need to heed his advice. Finally, please disregard the comments about the office. People need to focus on the important aspects of medical providers! read more

Based on my experience, I cannot give this place 3 stars. If you're okay with pre-computer era, classic designs, opera and history lessons, then this place may suite you. I have to agree with Dennis G. that Dr. Benjamin Lane is quite thorough in his examination. He is well qualified with all his degrees. There's no doubt about his qualifications and methods. It's more about execution. He doesn't or hasn't upgraded his filing system, which is still paper-based. His note-taking skills are a bit sub-par as he was not able to recall what was ordered a few weeks back. He has to look up prices through countless hard-copies to determine what is available for the insurance plans. I ordered my glasses the second week of December, and didn't get them until mid-February! The office is a mess with file folders and stacks of books strewn everywhere. I couldn't find a file cabinet. Credit card receipts are paper-clipped together. If you like opera, his brother, Ken, who acts as his assistant, loves to talk about his opera singing and Wagner. There are posters everywhere (see pic) in the waiting area about his Carnegie days and, I think, he operates a music store in the same building. Although they display lots of glasses, I could't fine one that suited my taste. They don't carry modern styles, like Ray Ban, nor sunglasses. read more

This place is not your traditional optometry. It's a house that's a few hundred years old and inside is a mess. All equipment matches the houses age. The dr also is very old and so is his brother who seems to manage the place. They are nice and that's why I gave 2 stars. In a world of assembly-line, get-em in / get-em out medical offices, Dr. Benjamin Lane of Nutritional Optometry Associates is by far unique. I've never had a more thorough exam for my eyes let alone for any other part of me and believe me when I tell you... the exam takes a long as it needs to, its over when Dr. Lane says it's over and not a minute sooner. The office is unlike any I've ever seen. When you walk in, you may be taken aback by stacks of old magazines in the waiting room, the framed pictures of Dr. Lane and/or his brother Kenneth, or perhaps the Wagner opera being sung by none other than the aforementioned Kenneth Lane (four-time concert headliner at Carnegie Hall in NYC). You may even think about walking out. But the fact of the matter is you shouldn't and here's why... He has six degrees (Princeton and Columbia to name a couple) He's a member of an advisory board on ocular nutrition He is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition He's the President of the Nutritional Optometry Institute He actually maintains a second office in NYC Sometimes he hosts a radio show on Sirus/XM on eyes and ocular nutrition He explains everything (and when I say everything I mean even the stuff you probably don't understand) Has the word "brilliant" entered your mind yet? Now, here's some of the things you should know... Dr. Lane is over 80 years old so he doesn't move as fast as he used to, I'm sure. He sometimes forgets where he puts things He's not very organized (there's quite a bit of clutter everywhere - especially on his desk) He likes to do math in his head rather than use a calculator (he says it keeps his mind fresh) His eyeglass frame collection is sort of "all over the place" (despite this, I still was able to find two perfectly stylish frames that fit just perfectly) His brother Kenneth helps out, but for the most part Dr. Lane does everything himself. The exam will take a long time (budget at least an hour or more) To be perfectly honest my first impression of Dr. Lane and Kenneth was well... not so good. I was expecting a more cookie-cutter medical office and was surprised by the all the clutter when I first walked through the door. They're different, but different in good way. But, first impressions can be deceiving and to be honest, they're both delightful and endearing in their own way. Kenneth (a part of the office as important as anything else) is extremely enthusiastic about his opera / acting career and loves to tell fascinating stories about days gone by. He's friendly, outgoing, charming, and funny. You'll likely leave the office with a flyer about his next local performance that includes where you can download his MP3 recordings for free. If you're timid about such people or are a stuffed-shirt type, you'll probably feel uncomfortable (and you know what... that's on you, not Kenneth). Dr. Lane, with all his foibles and untidy desk, is soft spoken, kind, and gentle. When he speaks about your eyes you can tell he's doing what he loves and one of the things he loves is treating his patients. He spoke about what he saw in the highly detailed photographs of my eyes, and at the same time assured me that some of the things he saw which caused him little concern can be reversed with proper care and nutrition. He is in a couple of words, distinct and special. In a nutshell... if you want a 20 minute exam and glasses in an hour this isn't the place for you. If you can only see the clutter on the desk and not the genius behind it, go somewhere else. If you're put off by quirky, sweet, charming, enthusiastic people, visit a chain store in the mall. If however you truly enjoy people with all their wonderful uniqueness, appreciate personal care and attention, and need your eyes checked, then by all means pay them a visit. read more

I am highly satisfied with Dr. Benjamin Lane when it comes to me and my family eye exams. yes, he is very detailed oriented. He does take his time. Dr. Lane is highly qualified Optometrist with many degrees from prestigious Universities. We are so used to of In and Out practices from other facilities. So when it comes to Nutritional Optometry, we expect the same 10-15 minutes tops, just like other providers without realizing we do need a thorough eye exam. When I first visited Dr. Lane office many years ago as a result of my regular optometrist has no availability in the last month of the year, i was thankful that she was unable to take me, because I found Nutritional Optometry. I was so happy to meet Dr. Lane and was highly impressed the way my eye exam was done, never had that opportunity before Dr. Lane. I really do not care how the office or the waiting area looks like, because I am not there for it. I am there for my eye exam. and if I have full attention, I am the happiest person. read more

I 100% agree with the other review. You walk in and it's different... the waiting area does not remind you of a doctor's waiting room... it's like a den/porch area with clutter and old magazine/newspapers and pictures all around. You are greeted by Kenneth Lane, the brother of the doctor. He is extremely friendly and accommodating, and he LOVES to talk about his singing, his pictures, his old cat, anything in particular! He loves to hand out flyers about his upcoming performances. Yes, Dr. Lane is not fast or quick on his toes, but honestly, he is one of the best eye doctors (if his degrees doesn't prove it) and really takes cares and loves what he does. He can go off topic and talk to you long and forget you are really there for an appointment than to chat with him, but when you direct him back on track, he knows what he is talking about. I think he was talking to me and my appointment went over by an hour or two! No joke! So if you are really anti-social, you want to get in an out within 30 minutes, and just want your quick prescription or check up, this place is not for you. However if you are very patient, love to chat with wonderful people and talk about opera, cats, or even general health, want to meet the most friendly staff in the whole wide world, and even get your eyes examined by a world class doctor, then this place is for you. read more

The place is cluttered but the new office manager Piyush is helping Dr Lane ,a GENIUS when it come to eye care and nutrition, remodel his entire business structure. If you want to be in an out make sure you stress that in your phone call when making an appointment or coming in for your visit because Dr Lane will take his sweet time. Dr Lane is slow but very thorough in his work. The frame bar is getting much better and they are starting to bring in a lot of new fashionable brands. If you choose to go to Dr Lane go in with patience because it might take sometime but you will be glad with the results. read more

I see Dr. Lane in New York City. He can easily spend 3 hours over two visits carefully studying your eyes and your nutritional status. If you want to avoid going blind in old age from macular degeneration, cataracts, etc. it's a good investment. The prescription is also top notch. Dr. Lane is also an advertisement for his methods, since he remains a practicing optometrist although he must be well over 80 years old. Dr. Lane is a true genius and I recommend using his services to get a boost to your health that you just cannot get anywhere else. read more
