I brought in my three year old who complained about pain in the left eye for two to three weeks. The staff was incredibly sweet and helpful. They took their time and made sure to give a thorough exam. The Dr. was also very informative and her years of experience shone through her explanations and the way she handled our daughter. I'm a long time patient here and I had Dr. Tanya Carter. I've come here entirely for her because I truly think she is very knowledgeable and willing to do whatever it takes to make sure her patients are happy. However, service is VERY slow here. I will always show up on time and I usually am not seen until 30-45min after my appointment. The front desk staff here (specifically one tall girl) is EXTREMELY rude and clearly is not happy with her job. Everyone else is pretty nice but maybe not the best - I actually had my lenses break once because the technician forced them into my frames and she gave them back to me with a big chip (pre COVID). Nevertheless, the doctors are great but everything else is terrible. If you have time to waste and don't mind the poor customer service, then this will do. read more

I went to Drs. Barnes and Carter because they took my insurance and they were local. I thought I was due for an eye exam and had been meaning to get prescription sunglasses for some time. My appointment was on time and thorough. The technician was very polite and did an initial exam. I then met with Dr. Barnes who also gave me a full exam. I liked the videos, which provided a good explanation of each of my eye conditions. (Presbyopia, anyone?) It turns out that I didn't need a new set of glasses after all so I was able to use my annual allotment for the prescription sunglasses (score), which was a very nice surprise. Dr. Barnes answered all of my questions and I felt that he took his time with me. He also allowed me the opportunity to defer having drops on another day because of my current study schedule, as they would interfere with my vision (I opted to have them anyway). I will continue to go here even when I will likely lose my coverage next year. They have good choices for glasses and parking is excellent for Montclair. read more

I hadn't been to an eye doctor since I was a child. This place was recommended to me by a coworker. Sadly, my experience was quite lacking after visiting my childhood eye doctor recently. First off, the staff was apathetic to my mere existence. The front desk was slow to check me in, much less acknowledge my presence. The doctor was mediocre, rather a dry personality. He diagnosed me with blastophitis (sp?) Sold me 5mL of ophthalmic meds for $50 (outrageous). When picking out frames, I was given minimal help and zero guidance. I opted for Progressive lenses and my new eye doctor informed me the frames I had picked at Barnes & Carter were not even meant to be used for Progressive lenses. The frames were too loose but never adjusted properly to fit my face. After receiving my new glasses from an eye doctor who invested time in me as a patient; Barnes & Carter disgust me for their overcharged and grossly lacking services. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

Dr Barnes exam was not as thorough as previous exams I have received. He is certainly a professional but I felt that he did not listen to my questions about my use of glasses for computer work. I ordered frames and lenses via the on site services and received an initial set of progressive high index lenses that were unsuitable for working on a computer. In my attempts to get suitable lenses it seemed as if the staff had little or no experience with occupational progressive lenses. Ultimately I received a pair of glasses that contained non high index lenses that were of inferior construction and fit. I will never use this optometrist again. Save yourself the trouble of going here if you need anything other than standard glasses. read more

I have been going to this eye doctor since 2011, I believe. Dr Carter is a really great doctor. If you have any type of problems with your eyes or anything you may believe is related to your eyesight that's bothering you, she will find the root of the problem and give advice on what to do to fix what is bothering you. Dr Barnes is also good as well. Overall, this place is fantastic. It is pretty costly, but it's worth going here. However, waiting time can take as long as 30 minutes. read more

I brought my five year old grandson to Dr. Carter and his interaction with him, the care that he showed and his expertise were amazing. I was actually moved by the whole experience. My grandson told him when he looked through his sample prescription was, "Thank you doctor for these new glasses." When we picked up the glasses, which were correctly presented to our insurance, he was amazed at the difference in his vision. I have had wonderful experiences of my own with Dr. Carter, but I was totally blown away by how well he interacted with my grandson. read more

The best, most thorough eye exam I've ever had was at the spotless, new-looking offices of Drs. Barnes and Carter. Even though my vision insurance doesn't cover much here, I will be going back for contacts and glasses because it was simply the best experience I've had at the eye doctor. They even ship the contacts directly to you in a day or so, for the same price you'd pay at 1-800-Contacts or at a site online. I'd love to give them 5 stars, but the location is not the greatest, and because of the weird one-way streets over there, it's hard to find parking. read more

The service here at Barnes and Carter is very inadequate. I came here a couple months ago during my college break on December 18th to get an eye exam. My old contact prescription wasn't working for me anymore. I needed an update. After my relatively short eye exam the doctor told me that I would receive my new trial pair of contacts in 3 days. I never got a call from the office until when I decided to call them on January 2nd. The front desk told me that the contacts arrived on December 22nd and that they left me a voicemail. I never received a voicemail and was very annoyed. I came into the doctor's office the next day and the contacts that they ordered were wrong. I told them I couldn't read with them in. The doctor responded very professionally and had them replaced. He told me I would receive new contacts in 3 days. 4 days later, I called the office to see if my contacts had come in. The front desk said I never ordered any contacts. They didn't believe me when I told them that I talked to the doctor just 4 days prior. The women at the front desk were rude. Frustrated, I got hold of the doctor and he ordered the contacts. Once again, he told me the contacts will arrive in 3 days. About a week later, I finally received my brand new pair of contacts. I wasn't very surprised when the contacts I received were once again the wrong prescription. I am currently in the process of finding a new eye doctor and getting my money back from Barnes and Carter. Moral of the story is that the front desk is very disorganized and disrespectful. The doctor is very nice and I believe that he is very qualified for his job, however, the doctor made too many mistakes that led me to become very frustrated with the office. This was my first time visiting Drs Barnes & Carter LLC, and my experience was pleasant. The office staff were great and very polite. I saw Dr Carter and she was so professional. She was thorough with the examination (better than my previous physician) and she explained things in a simplistic way to help me understand what was going on. I have been going there for many years but its time for me to go somewhere else. You make an appointment but have a long wait. No matter what your issue is Dr. Barnes will do a routine exam and give you a "partial incomplete" prescription and send you outside to purchase glasses. Dr. Carter is more personable and will address your concern. They process their payments using your eye care plan and your medical insurance. They have now begun to tack on extra fees. If you want a full prescription with your PD on it you have to pay $15. (Take a mental note of it when they write it on their paper) It takes almost 3 weeks to get your glasses back and your told they will ship them to your for $10 or if you decide to pick them up you must call when your outside and they will bring your glasses to you and if they need adjusting you have to make an appointment and come back. No more coming back for me. Charging for your PD when your spending hundreds of dollars and glasses with them is absurd. I guess their trying to make up what they lost with covid-19 but in reality they are losing more by running people away. read more

The service and professionalism of this office was horrendous. I got an eye exam and everything went fine. The staff told me that they would call me in 5-7 days so I could pick up my new contacts. I was surprised by the speediness! However, about 10 days later I called the office inquiring about the contacts that I have not received. The receptionist was perplexed, stating that I have never ordered contacts and just got an eye exam. I was disappointed, but I didn't lose hope. Humans make errors. I officially ordered my new contacts over the phone. 7 days later, I received a call to pick up my new contacts. When I got home to try them on, they were the wrong prescription. The number on the box did not match my Rx. I drove back to the office to return the faulty contacts. A week later, I finally received my working contacts. I would never go here again. My final prescription was correct, but the path to get it was awful. It took more than a month for my new contacts to arrive. The staff made way too many errors - the process could've taken less than a week. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Barnes for over 30 years! Over the years I have a few things wrong with my eyes, from issues with the optic nerve all the way to pink eye. Dr. Barnes, who I refer to as Frank, is able to provide a full array of treatments and has an excellent "bed side" manner. His office is full service and provides for all my needs. I never leave reviews, but I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with this practice. My son required, and received, quick and first rate attention to address an eye injury. The prognosis and treatment were right on point. All aspects of the services provided (including the doctors, medical assistant, and office staff) were excellent. Poor customer service. I waited 30 minutes to see a doctor for my APPOINTMENT. After they've taken your money you will be hard pressed to get them to lift a finger on your behalf. Top notch - incredibly professional and thorough, Dr. Barnes is a real treat in a world full of eye doctors that talk too fast and only seem interested in diagnosing your fashion needs and selling you the most expensive glasses. I also like that he takes the time to explain things to you in detail - the medicine and science behind it all: not just a brush off, but a patient thoughtful explanation. I've been going back and forth to Dr. Barnes for about 13 years. I absolutely love Dr. Barnes, however the help in his office is sub par. They are so unprofessional. Countless times the girls working behind the desk have misinformed me. It is so aggravating. Also, they are pretty expensive. Again, Dr. Barnes and Dr. Carter are gems. I just wish they would fire their lackadaisical office assistants and put people back there that are detail oriented. read more

I have been taking my children to Dr. Carter and Barnes for years. Although I have no complaints about the service my children have recieved from the doctors his staff is the most unprofessonial group I have ever encountered. The office manager is rude and makes you feel unwelcomed. The rest of the staff seem to follow her lead. My last and final encounter with her made me decided not to return again. i went here as itwas time for my yearly eye examand it was local,i was able to get the montclair town bus there. sorriest thing i did! i had my exam which when i got there i waitedabout 15 mins before i was called in . so the girl did preliminary tests on me such as color blindness etc so i was ushered into a exam room got in the chair and was moved rt away to another room , dr barnes [i presume ,as it was my first time here] came in and asked the usual questions which was fine , then he asked me if i had any complaints so i said no not really,[i thought he meant do i get headaches ,do my eyes burn,ache etc] so when i said no his reply was a bit snotty "you wear glasses dont you?was his answer. i let it go then dialated my eyes , he didnt wait until the drops took effect brfore he proceeded wioth the test. ok then i picked out my glasses and was told they'd be ready in 2 weeks . ok fast foward to dec23, i go and pick up my glasses which was a foggy day. when i put them on i sort of knew they weren't rt as when i looked ahead ,everything was blurry so i thought that it was me . i left and got the bus home [usually you have a 60-90 day return policy] like i stated because of the fog i thought when i couldnt read the street sign clearly was due to the fog. so i get on the bus and walked home i was wobbly and felt like i was drunk ,i had a bit of a headache so i took the new glasses off and put on mty old ones thats when i realized that the new ones were made wrong, with thte new ones i couldnt see the clock across my living room.i decided to go back the next day , when i got there they were closed due to it was christmas eve ,they should have had a sign on their door to let the patients know they weren't open christmas eve [some places are for a 1/2 day, so i had to wait till today mondaydec28th to go back so when i got there i told the receptionist my name and that there was a problem with my glasses so i waited another 15 mins for someone to address my problem, i was the only patient there . the girl was taking her time with another dr about glasses . ok finally she takes care of me when i told her what the problem was she tried to say there wasn't anything wrong . then she tells me to put the new glasses on and gives me a card[wehich was all in spanish ] i wear bifocals and it was clear but that wasnt what my problem was ,it was when i looked straight ahead . when i looked at her [and she was close ,i copuldnt see her face it was blurry. so i then put on my old glasses and saw perfectly she then goes and gets my chart and reads the prescription then she takes my old ones and goes in the back . tuirns out the left eye was incorrectly done [then and only then she believed me] i was lucky that i didnt fall . i was smart enough to not wear them . i now have to be reexamined on jan5th. i would prefer the other doctor and i dont want the drops . my left eye has always been my strongest eyeas my rt is weaker due to mty cp . i know i'm not a doctor but i do feel that we as laymen know when something isnot rt with our health [wiether we choose to do anything about it is a different story]. i hope the second time around is better then the 1st time i will not reccommend anyone to go here and if thwey do i hope they have a better experience than i did! read more

I never write reviews but I read them. I felt obligated to review Barnes and Carter because of my experiences there. I've never seen Dr. Carter but have seen Dr. Barnes and just recently took my 9 year old son there for an exam and glasses. Dr. Barnes' bedside manner is horrible. He's rude, dismissive and condescending. We he came into the examination room he barely acknowledged me, no hand shake or introduction. I also pay attention to how professionals interact with children. I brought my 2 yr old along and Barnes didn't even acknowledge him even after on several attempts the baby said hi to him. Anyone who is cold to a baby gets a clear RED FLAG from me. Also, the exam didn't go very smoothly. I believe it was clearly because of his demeanor and not being "kid friendly." Also, he said it would take THREE WEEKS to get his glasses! This ridiculous when you can go to other places and get glasses in an hour! I have been going to Alan Schlussel in West Orange for years but because of recent insurance changes Barnes was the closest, in network doctor could find. I then remembered why I hadn't gone back to Barnes after this last appointment. He is rude and arrogant. He also told me I have some kind of eye condition that would get worse if I didn't get treatment from that was unsubstantiated by Dr. Schlussel which by the way was told by Barnes my son has the same thing. I believe he gets some sort of financial gain from diagnosis/treatment of this condition. Another words if you planned on going to him my recommendation is to go somewhere else. I have a huge problem paying for services from people that treat you like they are doing you a favor by seeing you. read more

ok so i went to this office on 10/10/17 to get new glasses. while the service was great by the staff and even dr. barnes. here's my issues they told me my glasses would be ready in three weeks or sooner. so i called today to see if my glasses were ready. not only they are not ready but the order was not sent in for my glasses until 10/24/17. so my order was just sitting in this office ten days before it was sent out...smh i am steaming!!! i asked to speak with dr. barnes and was told he's with a patient i then asked to speak with the manager or someone about this situation and i'm not accepting there's no one i can speak with. finally someone gets on the phone and tells me the person who sends out the orders are behind. she then said they will call and see if my order can be rushed since it was sent out so late. that's all fine and well, but i will not be going back here. you are dealing with people glasses not a playing matter. read more
