I visited this place about 4 times, since I only work across the road, they present a different option to Menya Ramen and I could duck down, grab a quick meal and be back upstairs in 15 minutes if I'm in a hurry.
I think they do have some decent dishes but some could definitely be better.
Hainan chicken rice: the rice wasn't "chickeny" enough - should really be cooked in chicken soup and chicken fat, with a good dose of lemongrass. The rice here was a bit bland. The sauces weren't the right ones (dark, thickened soy sauce, minced chilli with garlic and vinegar sauce and ginger/shallot). The soy sauce was missing. At least the portion of chicken was decent. The chicken soup was clearly made of chicken powder, but that's one part I'm always willing to forgive.
Rendang beef (served as a 2-choice with rice) - everything was fine, I could possibly consider it at a level above what it is - in a scoops-with-rice-foodcourt level. I wouldn't mind having this again, if only I could handle heat better than I do.
Sambal eggplant - the flavours are all there, it was pretty tasty. A touch oily, but you can't really cook eggplant commercially without putting in a lot of oil, otherwise there'd be that funny tang on the tongue.
Soya pork belly - nothing spectacular, I was probably expecting something with a stronger soy sauce flavour given I'm paying money for it. Tasted a little more like home cooking but in a not-so-good way.
Laksa - I expected a little more from the soup, more coconut cream. And perhaps a little more of volume for the price.
I did have one other dishes from the 2-choices on another visit, but can't quite remember it. What really did get to me was the rice though. A bit grainy and a little undercooked - wasn't really expecting that. One way to really tell is if they give you sauce with the 2 choices (say soya pork belly) and the rice doesn't absorb the sauce - that's where I draw the line. Poor rice really ruins the experience, even if it's fast food.
Personally, if I had a choice (i.e. work schedule allowing), I wouldn't go here, unless if the price in general was down by about 10-15%. read more
