I was booked once at the 1st Precinct, for a civil disobedience action in the late 90s; a number of us "sat in" for the community gardens, down in front of Borough of Manhattan Community College, and naturally we were arrested. I guess we were at the precinct a few hours, but fortunately there were too many of us to transport down to Central Booking (see my review) to put through the system. (There's safety in numbers!) Spent hours retracing my steps in the early evening yesterday, Sunday, in hopes of finding my wallet under the numerous Tribeca and Battery Park City benches I'd availed myself to under the day's brilliant sunshine. No such luck. Dinner would be missed. So today for a few brief moments my curmudgeon exterior was in peril, thanks to Officers Breslin's "We found your wallet" voicemail, and Officer Bryant's slaying of the NYPD lost and found computer serpent system to release my wallet -- $50 AMC Theatre gift card in tact. I rarely have interactions with the NYPD, but both officers were cordial, professional and cool like the good cops you see on TV, taking deliberate effort in explaining things.... certainly friendlier than my last Citibank teller encounter even. In a past economic time, I would've had a round of cheeseburgers delivered to the precinct. read more

With all of the bad media coverage of the police, I wanted to let people know just how great of a job the police, detective and staff did. They were responsive, thorough and willing to listen and take extra initiative to take an unfortunate situation and make it as pain free as possible. I was verbal assaulted by the same stranger twice yesterday at two different locations (Staten Island Ferry and in the train station). Still being paranoid and couldn't get the incident out of my head, I called 911 and asked if I can file a report, she said yes. I waited a good hour for someone to come to me but no one came so I called and asked where would be the nearest precinct but the operator just told me to stay and wait... I asked if she knew how long, she said she does not know. So I told her to cancel it and she did. She was indirectly saying that there was no point to file a report if I'm not going to see that person again, in my mind that translated to "if a stranger raped you and you don't know who that person is, there's no point in reporting since you're not going to see that person again. So I asked a nearby police officer about where I should go and was told to go to the 1st precinct, so I went still unsure whether I should file. Spoke with some officers and in the end didn't file a report. But honestly, I felt so much better after the visit. Not sure if it's because it was kind of a closure for me, or because I spoke with a cop or because the cop had gorgeous eyes. (He looks just like Michael Scofield from Prison Break!) But in the end, I walked out feeling better. Pepper Spray is not illegal. (or so I was told) Ps. Reality vs TV show = different... Ha... There weren't a lot of people there but the ones I have spoken to, are nice and helpful. -I read more

Have an emergency? Is someone stalking you, calling you non stop? threatening you that they are going to your house to hurt you? (woman at the precinct is witnessing the texts, calls, voice mails) - don't come here. As I filed a police report on 2/14/15 the woman (some DC37 civilian worker) taking my report looked at me and said "oh he's just blowing off some steam" without any consolation - I didn't even really know who my harasser was! Then she said "hopefully someone will call you back" in which case I think she trashed my report since I haven't heard anything from the NYPD. HORRIBLE read more

This is not the best Precinct I've ever dealt with, and I've seen quite a lot throughout my life :) The officers were focused on me rather than the report I was filing. I wish I could do that online some day, I prefer to catch some eyes in different places. But - it was all done briefly and I was served with some meals and spring water which was not bad at all. Two weeks ago I was notified that my neighbor reported a camera being pointed at my apartment from an apartment across the alley. Since then, I have keep an alert eye out for anything out of the ordinary. Last night, sitting on my couch I looked up to see a camera pointing directly at me. So creepy. As I took photo's for evidence and drew my shades, a man came to the window and then shut off all the lights to black out his apartment. He knew he had been seen. Today I called the 1st precinct to see what my options are in this situation. It took 4 hours to get someone to answer the phone. Once I did, I was told to "call 911 or draw my shades. "There was nothing they could do".I have had a camera pointed at me without my knowledge for over two weeks. I am left with the knowledge that on the street I would not recognize him, but he knows me.. How concerning it would be if a woman in my situation turned up missing or harmed. read more

As a victim of identity theft, I needed to file a report at my local precinct. When I arrived late on a Saturday afternoon, the courteous desk clerk (Chan) directed me to an office to file the report. I was greeted immediately by Officer Frances who explained what I need to do and patiently walked me through the process. She helped make the most unfortunate experience of being a victim of identity theft more human and understanding. I really appreciated her professionalism and willingness to help expedite the report. read more

A dear friend was detained and brought to this precinct. He called me to go get his belongs. 15 min later, I arrived and the officer at the front door was polite as can be. I explained to him that a friend just called me asking me to pick up his belongs and as I was explaining this extremely RUDE man dressed in regular clothes tells the officer that I cannot go in. I explained that I was given permission to come get his belongings and I just traveled in the cold to do so. The officer explained to me that the gentlemen without uniform is the chief Sargent and he couldn't let me in. Now, from my story this chief Sargent was not dressed, I had no idea who that was, the Sargent didn't even bother to speak to me, snuck behind me, cut into our conversation to say NO! You would think after NYPD are always on the news they would finally understand how to deal with the public. I almost gave up until I received another call from my dear friend and his arresting officer giving me permission to go pick up his belongs. I had to ask the arresting officer to come get me at the door because it's very unfortunate to say but I didn't not feel comfortable and quiet frankly I was scared and I know it was going to be a problem if I went back to the door after being declined entree. The arresting officer had to come get me at the door and briefly told the officer at the door that it is up to the arresting officer to give permission to pick up a persons belongings. It's a shame that this officer has door duty and he does not know what the rules are. He did explain that he was new and apologized, but either way you would expect someone to know what comes with door duty. Wait I'm not done.... As I was leaving another officer was coming in and I moved out of the way trying to polite. This officer tells me to come on out in a very condescending manner and if you have ever visited this precinct before you know the front door is guarded by police dividers. They opened them when I was coming in, but coming out I had to open them myself. Huge sigh!!! I was very frustrated. I hope NYPD can get it right one day. This isn't right and I'm not a man, I'm was not being aggressive and all I kept getting was rude and arrogance that I was not asking for. If I could right this review without a star I would have. I had to call police from this precinct to come out to 250 Hubert Street (residential building) near the West Side Highway. At first I called the precinct directly before calling 911. I was told by a man that 250 Hubert was not in the first precinct's district and was told to call the sixth precinct. I did and was told no, it is the first precinct who deals with 250 Hubert. 250 Hubert has a service entrance on Washington street for contractors working in apartments to bring in their equipment. It's required that you sign-in and receive a temporary sticker. I was told by the "super" that for some reason there is a separate company dealing with signing people in by the name of GC which I think is this company - http://www.yelp.com/biz/gc-nyc-manhattan-2 due to construction going on in the building. The person signing people in who wears a "security" t-shirt got into an argument with my co-worker before I could even sign in because I pressed the elevator button without his permission. It was clear that the person was mentally unstable. I went to sign-in, and said that we need to get this over with and get to work. I asked what time it was in order to write it into the sign-in sheet and was told "GET A WATCH" by the "security" guy who was still arguing with my co-worker. He then got in my face and pressed his two fingers into my face underneath my eye. I backed away and he did it again. We argued and I left and called the police. I found out that the name of this person is Arthur Barnes. The police came and collected the info. Arthur Barnes got a co-worker to lie with him and used my story against me to defend his guilt. To make matters worse, the only spot on the property without cameras was where the incident took place! I was told by the officer filing the assault report that I could call the next day and get info as to how I can receive a copy of the report for around $10. He gave me a phone number and the report number (#3790). I called and was told that NO, they do not give out copies of reports unless it's a car accident report. I wanted to send this report to the employer of Arthur Barnes to let them know that they have a time-bomb as an employee. Twice from this precinct (probably from the same officer whose name I will with-hold) I experienced severe ignorance. They didn't know what streets their precinct covered, and they didn't know (or lied) that people cannot get copies of reports that are not due to a car accident. A lawyer can obtain a copy, though. Next time I have an incident, I'm not calling the NYPD. In my experience, they have caused more grief and have not "served and protected" with CPR (courtesy, professionalism, respect).
