Spent a couple days in Clayton stopped here for dinner. Walked right in not very busy since it was the offseason . Found a nice table by the window. Server came right over ordered a couple beers a very nice tap list to choose from. Had the an appetizer of mozzarella sticks with the berries dip it was fantastic. Wife ordered a Reuben which she liked and I had the devils own burger recommended by the waitress what a great burger. Went as a group with kids for St Patrick's day lunch/apps. The service was quick and kind. It's definitely an energetic bar scene but it was what we wanted to celebrate and be an easy place with kids. They had a bunch of St Patrick's day drink specials and hats/necklaces which was fun. We ordered a bunch of apps, pretzels, cheese curds, garlic knots, chicken tenders, quesadilla. Everything was good but the cheese curds were a huge favorite! Our family was staying in the area on vacation and wanted pizza for dinner. O'Briens did not disappoint. I called in the carry out order and it was ready when my husband arrived to pick it up. Had great chicken wings and onion rings a couple weeks ago while enjoying college football and good company. The wings were crispy on the outside; tender on the inside. Wonderful place to watch a game and meet some friendly local folks. We were fortunate to stop in this great small town as we were driving from Franklin, VT, to Auburn, NY, and decided to drive along the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario. Food was OK. 2 things really annoyed me , the family of 5 at the next table was seated before us , order taken before us , got there food well after us. The father was really patient and polite asking what the delay was. I would have already walked out. When the food finally came for them his was burnt ! He calmly said just take it off the bill I don't want anything anymore. Where was the manager to apologize? 2nd annoying event was the suggested tip 16%,18%,20%. Been Going to Obriens for 40 yrs. Always a good time until yesterday when we were charged for every salad dressing and $7.28 for a small plastic cup of beer. $60 for a burger, salad and wings. How disappointing. Guess good things don't last for ever. Beware!! read more

The service was horrible. Ignored until we ended up leaving.. We sat down at the bar to get a drink and appetizer, the bar staff seemed more interested in stocking the bar than serving customers. They were busy on a Thursday night however they didn't even show any interest in communicating with us, even after I said hello to several staff members they kept stocking the bar right in front of us no more than 2 feet away.. My husband and I & 2 other couples had dinner here on 7/29/24 @ 5pm. Out of 6 dinners only two were ok. The sauce on the two chicken française dinners was so salty they were sent back. Instead they chose beer battered haddock. Just ok. I also had the beer battered haddock which must have been covered to keep it warm so the batter was soggy. The open faced reuben wasn't very tasty. The broiled haddock was ok, a little over cooked. The only hit at the table was the shrimp pasta. Our server Katie was fine and attentive. This place is a dive. As of last year they renovated the dining room... But they haven't gotten their act together. Service is slow, food is not great. Do not waste your time at the bar. Called to get a pizza we are staying in Clayton and apparently the sidewalk roll up by 7:00 because this is the only place we could get a pizza. The pizza was very good the low rating is for the witchy waitress that took my order. I asked her what size pizza they had she told me to look on the website and call back. Well that wasn't going to happen because she just met her "witch match" she was going to tell me and I was going to order without looking at the website! On a Sunday night this is pretty much your only option for dinner besides the hotel restaurant, so we headed here since we'd already eaten twice at the hotel. Place was not super full and the dining room was quiet in a depressing kind of way. Maybe it was because we were there after labour day but there's not a lot going on in the town. Food was mediocre, typical bar fare. Fills you up, doesn't taste awful, but don't go out of your way for it. Vegetables we're probably frozen, etc. Spinach artichoke dip and the Alfredo were both more like runny soup than solid food. But the entire experience was redeemed by our amazing waitress, Olivia, who knocked the socks off every waitress we'd experienced during our trip, including the ones at the expensive hotel restaurant. She was so friendly and attentive. I'm bumping this review from 3 to 4 stars just because of her. Management should promote her!! Besides that, the other upside is that the portions are huge so you won't go hungry. The decor is pretty cute though - Mariner themed, little buoys and ship photos etc. Not bad as the only other dinner option in town on a Sunday. Prices are okay too, especially compared to the hotel. White pizza and supreme pizza were great. Wings were extremely mushy so if you like your wings to be really soggy and falling apart, this is the place for you!!! Unfortunately, we don't so they went in the trash. Also, the celery was put in with the wings so it was cooked and wilted from the heat of them. But those are just issues due to our personal preference so not the businesses fault- I'm sure many love their wings and celery that way! Customer service was great, it was a welcoming place and is a great location. 2nd stop here we had the Poutine, the Beef Dip Sandwich and a Turkey Club. All were excellent. The Poutine is delicious. First and foremost, I understand it's covid. The wait staff is definitely taxed, BUT they're underwhelming in terms of paying attention to their customers. Simply being attentive, making eye contact or not still walking when asking you a question is wait service 101. Food is good, service staff needs training and the restaurant manager of their is one needs, needs, needs training. The bar takes precedence in this place, and the restaurant is a distant second place. My friend and I stopped into O'Brien's one summer evening for what we hoped would be a quick dinner, as we only had a little more than an hour to spare before a concert at the Clayton Opera House. There were a few customers besides us, but the place wasn't crazy-busy. However, our very congenial and apologetic waitress informed us that the kitchen was running about 20 minutes behind. For drinks, my friend ordered the house merlot, while I had a Dogfish IPA. She described the wine as nothing special. I enjoyed my cold draft beer very much. For appetizers, she chose the poutine, while I played it safe with a salad. Poutine, if you're not familiar, is a Canadian "delicacy" consisting of French fries, cheese curd and brown gravy. There wasn't, my friend observed, a whole lot of cheese included in her dish. Portion was plentiful, though. As for my salad, it was pretty much inedible. Romaine lettuce tasted bitter and was tough. Grape tomatoes were not at all tasty. To make matters worse, I'd asked for balsamic dressing and was served Italian. I didn't bother correcting the mistake, because the food took so long to arrive in the first place. Fortunately, our entrees made it to the table not long after our appetizers. My friend had the perch platter. Again, portion size was impressive. She was satisfied with her meal. I ordered a cheeseburger, which I requested to be cooked medium-well and topped with cheddar cheese. It was actually on the rare side, and the cheese was Provolone. Oh well... I was hungry, so I still ate most of it. For me, the best part of the meal was the beer. Still, that won't deter me from trying O'Brien's again in the future. The bartender who took our order never apoligized and tried to put a spin on the real reason why. Then when the food arrived the waitress insulted my wife when she told her to act like an adult and be patient. I then informed her the appetizer was burned.
