I started guitar lessons as a beginner two years ago with Sean. I take a 30 minute lesson each week from Sean. I will cut to the chase: I will grow old with Sean as my 'gee-tar' guru. I am very pleased with my progress during these last two years. I have had years of piano lessons and voice lessons from a number of excellent teachers. I rank Sean among the best of them despite being the youngest. I think his relative youth is actually a wonderful asset. His enthusiasm for guitar music and performance certainly shows. He always understands and relates the difficulties I face to his own experiences and quickly suggests proven ways to address those issues. I believe it is because he is not that far removed from his own learning experiences. It is always comforting to know that my issues are not unique, and just as importantly, I now have proven methods to overcome those difficulties. I also want to mention that Sean is extremely attentive during lessons and very quick to catch my errors or issues, and suggest corrective remedies. As a consequence, I have been able to make steady progress during the last two years. As a person, I found Sean to be level headed, well rounded and mature beyond his years. I always enjoy conversations with him about diverse subjects. It is an important consideration because some light diversion can restore balance when the learning gets too intense. His teaching style is mellow, sometimes funny, even though he is direct and exacting. So I always look forward to the learning experience instead of fearing it. After two years, I can now perform a number of my favorite songs to my own satisfaction. I am in the process of putting together my first performance portfolio, and will perform at an Open Mic with Sean in a week. For years ago, at age, 70, I decided to try learning guitar. I tried out three different instructors, mostly at guitar stores, and was disappointed. Sean is outstanding! I've been a musician most of my life but not a guitarist. I was tentative about taking classical guitar lessons at this point but I thought I'd try Sean after hearing his beautiful playing. I am repeatedly surprised each week at how much Sean helps me. Sean play Metallica at our Wedding! 'Nough said! Honestly, Sean has been so great to work with for our big day! He provided a list of his favorites and I youtube stalked him for some song selections. With advanced notice, he will play requests, which we had. My husband and I heard "Nothing Else Matters" while sitting on the couch together and jokingly sang it to each other. It is hard to find words to describe how happy I am with the classical guitar instructions I have received from Sean O'Connor. He is such a musical talent, a brilliant musician. But, more important to me, he is a gifted teacher. I have yet to ask a question that is not met with a knowledgeable answer. He is supremely patient, and a joy to work with. Often, you find that those who have an extraordinary talent are unable to explain their process to those, like me, who are far less gifted. That is not the case with Sean. He is patient, gentle and encouraging while he constantly nudges you toward steady improvement. It must be so hard to listen to the clunkers I can make, but he always meets my goofs with a gentle, "Let's try that again." No judgement, just encouragement and enthusiasm. There are no words to explain the experience of being a student of Sean O'Conner. I imagine he was surprised to find that his new student was an 81 year old woman who at one time was a music major in college. Now I wanted to learn technique and be able to read music on a guitar.
