We drove out to this park to join in on the Los Angeles Orienteering Club event. This is a great large park to hold this event which has so many trails, bike lanes, dry riverbed, restrooms, and many parking spaces. On Sunday the entrance fee was 5 dollars. If you come out here plan on spending many hours exploring the area as there is a lot to do especially if you like to hike. read more

The campsite is near a major road that a lot of race cars with loud exhausts race and drive on. You'll hear popping noises and loud exhausts every night. Disturbing the peace of sleep. The creek is dried up during the summer. The place has good showers and bathrooms. Really can't get a good nights sleep camping here. Place is beautiful with lots of trees and trails to hike. As near perfect as you can get. Wilderness for miles and miles. Uphill downhill, twisty curves, tree canopies, parks along the way, skunks squirrels and quietness. From O'Neil Park from the north to the south of Capistrano. GREAT for bikers, great for long distance runners and amazing all day walk and hikes. I just touched 15 of the passage.... looking to see so much more. I started from the 241 freeway area and headed south. Bathrooms water fountains and great ambiance make this a great place - and so many entry points. Take water, and be prepared to just stay here for hours. About a 30 mins away from drive from Irvine. This camp site is great for beginners or if you want a quick get away. Facilities are clean and well maintained. I stayed in spot 42 which is right across from the restrooms and showers. You can hear people and some road noise fat away but people were respectful and quiet. Overall a great close getaway to stay outdoors. read more

I've been here twice. Once in April and recently in August. Restrooms are clean. Shower was great! Sites are clean. People were quiet during quiet hours (10am-7am). Not a lot of bugs or critters trying to get in your tent. The campground is 8 min away from Smart n Final/Starbucks. read more

We always come here when we feel like getting away from the city life. The perfect place for a quick weekend trip!!

I chose to run the Arroyo Trabuco Trail and some of the shoot off trails this weekend for my long run and I'm so happy I did. This trail was a blast! I got turned around because the rains caused the creek bed to be pretty flooded but there were so many other trails that went up and down hills. I ran 9 miles and just over 800 feet of gain. This area is gorgeous right now - flowers are blooming and everything is bright green from the rain. Parts of the trail are muddy so it will slow you down a bit. Be careful to watch out for mountain bikes and dirt bikes as the side trails are single track. There are signs but always be mindful of mountain lion country. This section of the park is pretty close to the main road and school so I wasn't too worried. read more

This review is for the Arroyo Trabuco Trail that we accessed from Rancho Santa Margarita. Free parking along Arroyo Vista street. No parking allowed on Thursdays. The trail is quiet and not very picturesque. It is sandy and not shaded but can possibly accommodate a jogging stroller. We encountered quite a few cyclists. It's a short hike down a hill (not stroller friendly) to the creek which was where my kids had the best time! Perfect to cool down from the sun. It is shaded, the water is cool, there are lots of little rocks to look at and there were little fish and tadpoles in the water. Make sure you bring a change of clothes and a towel. And bring water appropriate sandals. read more

"Huge park with Many Trails." This is one of the larger county parks. There are a ton of trails, many of which are suitable for beginner hikers. Keep in mind that during times of rain, some of the trails might be closed. For example, right now many trails are closed due to muddy conditions. Of course, you can drive to the main entrance, but you'll have to pay a parking fee. Instead, I like to hike into the park from one of the many different trails. For example, there is an entrance in Rancho Santa Margarita which is just one mile from the park. I enjoy running down that trail. I have never seen any snakes there. The county produces an excellent park map, which shows all of the trails. One of the Rangers was kind enough to give me one of these maps, but you can also purchase them at the ranger station. They aren't very expensive, and they are well worth buying. There are also multiple campgrounds, which you can reserve. There are shower facilities near some of the campgrounds. I never tried them, but I always wondered if they have hot water or if it's one of those kinds where you have to put quarters in to get hot water. If you find out, please let me know. So all-in-all, an excellent resource. This is a really big Park and quite a treasure for South Orange County. read more

05.31.2020 After being quarantined since March 13th it was GREAT to hang out with our family. Hubby lucked out getting this reservation only two weeks prior. Due to continued COVID-19 precautions, only every other site was occupied. This gave us (actually the kids) three sites to spread out on and enjoy the awesome weather and scenery. The showers were closed but the restrooms were VERY CLEAN! They were well-stocked with soap and toilet paper. Be aware of the front gate hours or you could be locked out...or locked in. LOL! The kids loved the set up of the sites and roads were smooth for bike riding and skateboarding. The creek/stream was very low, maybe calf high. But it entertained the kids long enough that they came back with some tadpoles. There were well placed water sources/faucets throughout as we had one across the road from our first site and then another one accessible at our second site. We can't wait to come back and stay here again! read more

Biggest perk & reason this is the nicest camping I've had in awhile...showers, flushable toilets & hand dryers! I don't think any of the reviews had pictures of the showers but they're clean and I love having a hot shower & a place to dry/dress. One day I had a nice shower and the second I had gone during a peak time and it was barely above freezing. brrrr. Huge shoutout to the cleaning crew who was there every morning. Sweeping, restocking and keeping everything top notch clean! No one got bit, there were few flies (probably also due to no porta-potties), & the biggest problem we had was squirrels eating food that wasn't in containers. The neighbors were friendly and thankfully there were no crying babies as the sites were close to each other. I was in the inner circle. If you book an outer campsite, it reduces the overall chatter. All in all a fantastic camping trip. Not quite glamping and not quite get-down-with-nature camping that I'm use to. I'm a fan! read more

We absolutely love O'Neill Regional and visit the trails often. Every time we come we see a family of deer, the sun is shining through the trees, and there is always plenty of campers to get FOMO. The best park about this park is my husband and I got married here! There are no fees as long as your event is under 20 people, otherwise you'll need to secure a permit. The park rangers are always kind, helpful, and making sure the park is safe. The park is quite large running from RSM to the beach. You'll never get bored exploring the trails, seeing the wildlife, and making new memories! read more

it's close, clean, well maintained, and bathroom and shower facilities are a huge plus. we love the playground and the adjacent river when it's not dried up. the wood is top notch and cheap. the only cons for me are: 1. the bees in summer (i don't think they're stinging bees - but they will annoy you when you're cooking and eating. 2. obnoxious motorcycles thundering down the adjacent rode. otherwise, i will keep going back. read more

There's not much to do and it's super hot during the summer. I'd suggest they add more to the area like more water activities.

My review is based off of my camping experience. It's a fairly large park with plenty of camping sites. $20 per night to camp (make a reservation ahead of time) and only $5 for a second car. Each space fits 2 cars (some can fit what looks to be 3). There's plenty of space in between sites with fire pits and grills nearby. There are public restrooms available as well as showers. I camped here last weekend for the first time and I can say it was a pretty good experience here. No rowdy people and many of them went to bed around 10 or so. People here aren't loud and are very respectable to others. There's a creek that runs along the park and is pretty cool to check out, as there was some running water when I was there. Park rangers patrol the area frequently making sure everyone abides by the rules of the park and making sure everyone's safe. They're very friendly and will politely ask of you to correct anything that you may have done wrong. Firewood must be bought at the entrance if needed, and I believe it is $5 for a bundle (a pretty large bundle). Do know that this park is next to a road (Live Oak Canyon Road/Trabuco Canyon Road) that many sports cars/bikes frequent on. I heard a group of Ferrari's as early as 6:30AM storming through, but it didn't bother me since I'm an early riser. Overall, this campsite is pretty nice and I will definitely come back again to get "off the grid". read more

Our 2nd visit to this campsite within less than a month later, indicative of how my 1st time camping was enjoyable and not nearly long enough to explore the gifts that nature unconditionally provides. This time around, we came with a bigger group and took two adjacent spots for "social distancing" recommendations...despite that most family members of our group were already Covid-vaccinated. Our go-to spots were #41 & 42, which were adjacent to the restrooms/showers (yes, not as primitive as I would've imagine but grateful that some amenities were luxuriously available), outside potable water for washing dishes, food prep, or rinsing muddy dog feet, and a large trash bin. Now all we have to do is call Instacart for groceries and DoorDash for food delivery (j/k) Ultimately, a camping novice like myself, who typically preferred hotels and VRBO's for my travel adventures, is slowly convinced and inspired to do more camping trips since O'Neill Regional Park was a truly refreshing experience and good starter package to be initially exposed to. Moving on up to more secluded, closer-to-nature, and further from modern conveniences on our upcoming camping excursions! read more

This OC Park is awesome and amazing! It's clean, well maintained and provides a family environment for kids to play and explore in a safe manner. Something that we particularly enjoy is Storywalk that for the most part gets changes every 1-3 months. Kids love it and we as parents enjoy the lessons within each book which pertain not only to nature but also real things that little ones experience. O'Neill would be that much more awesome if there were trails that were dog friendly. This unfortunately has become a deterrent from visiting and hope in the future at least a couple of trails would be permitted. read more

I recently stayed at this location. I didn't feel it was a good camping experience for my family and I. There wasn't much hospitality. I feel the people that worked here were not friendly. The place was disgusting on a few levels. The restrooms were clean, the picnic area was not open during my visit. read more

There are two main options for camping in Orange County: O'Neil Regional Park and Ronald Caspers. While both are close to each other, O'Neil is the better choice in regard to comfort. Extremely close to the main road, clean restrooms, and a convenience store nearby in case you forget anything - O'Neil is a car camping treat. Not to mention the lack of bugs/bees! I had a problem with bugs at Ronald Caspers. Even though the amount of people and cars nearby deters it from being a 100% nature outing, O'Neil is still a great OC experience - it's right outside your backyard! read more

A nice place to enjoy nature and some wildlife, that's easy to get to from south OC. This regional park offers plenty of camping and day-use areas where you can enjoy a picnic/bbq or go for a hike. They charge $5 per car for day use. I brought my young kids here to experience some nature and to get some fresh air, and it turned out to be perfect for them. Although there are a number of trails with varying difficulty, the easiest one offered plenty of shade along the way with some nice views, making it perfect for young kids. There were hardly any people there on a Saturday morning, which allowed us to enjoy all the sounds of nature as well. Sure, my kids spent more time playing with rocks and bugs than actually hiking, but the area provided everything we needed to enjoy a few hours in nature. read more

It's an ok campground, not really a connoisseur of camping so I don't have a lot to compare it to. I was very disappointed in the noise from the road. After going to sleep I was awoken several times from traffic on the road, after 3am I thought it would stop but there was still cars afterwards that woke me. Maybe I'm just a light sleeper. No issues with any animals, there quite a bit of ants though. I would recommend ear plugs next time and also take your soap with you rather than leaving it by the taps because ours was taken. read more

Great park. My kid love it. A little dissapointing lately we've been there a couple times before 12 on a Saturday and the nature centers been closed as well as storybook trail because of the rain. One obviously is not their fault. We still love it and so close to where we live so we're happy to pay the 5 dollars limited access or not. What a great spot. The ragers and host are super cool. We were a little noisy past 9pm and they paid a visit but that's their job...to keep order. The bathrooms/showers were clean and the sites well taken care of. There is no mud in the sites even though it's been raining for the past 3 days; must be the mulch (see pic). I sauntered here on a lazy Saturday afternoon expecting an ordinary OC park. But actually this is a very scenic wildlife conservation area and much bigger than an average regional park. They have nice campgrounds. If you are driving you have to pay $5 day use fee on a weekend and $3 for weekday. They have clean restrooms, nature trails, camping areas, group picnic areas, lawns, children's playground. Perfect for OC families with kids and eve young adults who want to get away from busy OC roads and freeways. I like this park a lot and I will update review for best nature trails. read more
