From Plano Trabuco/Trabuco Creek Road, you can still drive in, up to the gate, which is securely closed. Since I was driving someone else's car, I parked about a mile after the model airplane runway. My in-laws Toyota Camry did pretty good, and I inflicted hardly any damage to their vehicle. The day that I visited, there were four cars parked at the gate. Of course, you have to hike from that point on. It's a few miles to get to the volunteer fire station it's a nice run or hike from that point on. I had an opportunity to talk to some locals, who explained that the local fire marshal, Mike, died a few months ago. He lived in the last cabin right before the official trailhead-- the one that is now closed. So I was disappointed that the Falls trailhead is closed, but I still enjoyed running the road.

This one is easier. Especially after the rain it was even more gorgeous. Difficulty- this is an easy hike, the incline is not to crazy with some minor challenges but there is quite a bit of water running through so just keep in mind there will be some crossing points where it is more slippery. Take your time especially with the kiddos. Environment- the trail is kept up pretty well but the drive out to the trail was REALLY... REALLY bumpy. There are so many pot holes even in my buddies 4wheel drive we really had to take our time. There were some Hondas they made it out there but just take your time on the road... Don't destroy your car trying to get out there quick. There were not a lot of insects and I did check my pup and I did not find any ticks. But always check your fur babies lol Traffic - we got out to the trail at about 1pm , there was not a whole lot of foot traffic so it was comfortable. I also wanted to send a thanks to the holy gym volunteer fire department. They left a wagon full of waters with a tip jar at the beginning of the trail and I thought that was pretty amazing. You don't see that very often but it was Greatly appreciated. I'll definitely be back to this hike it's great for beginners and your pups. Just come out and enjoy it .

The path itself was paved for the first mile or so and then became dirt/sawdust. While the trail runs behind and below shopping centers and housing, you never really see much of the structures. We walked a good chunk of the trail to the Peace Obelisk and then turned around and went back to where we parked in a shopping center, which was approximately a 4-mile round trip. It was a good walk on a Saturday afternoon. There weren't a whole lot of people to be seen on our walk; a few families, dog walkers, a couple of joggers, a couple of bicyclists. The entire path is an easy walk and mostly flat. Again, there are several entrances to the trail and there are actually 2 separate parallel trails on either side of the creek. This is a great place to spend a little time in nature while still being in the middle of Mission Viejo.

The Oso Creek Trail is a classic "Yuppie Nature" trail: mostly paved or manicured paths, and…read morenothing too challenging or dangerous. Exactly the kind of "outdoor" experience my wife loves! But seriously, it's a wonderful place to stretch your legs right in the heart of Mission Viejo. The trail runs along both sides of Oso Creek, hence the name, and each side of the trail is a bit different. One side is paved and the other is dirt or bark covered, for a more "natural" feel. There are also some fun points of interest along the way, including a hedgerow maze, various bear statues, and a park adjacent to the Norman P. Murray Community & Senior Center. It's great for families with small kids or strollers to push, as well as solo joggers, dog walkers, or even bikers. It's long enough and stretches at least a couple miles to get some good exercise in. If you're in the area, it's well worth a visit to enjoy. Five stars!

When we arrived around 8:30 on a Saturday morning, the paid parking lot was already full. There are very few parking spaces overall in the paid $3 lot. We ended up as Ralph's customers that morning and found a couple of last-minute items that we needed before starting our hike. It was a nice and cool morning with a slight breeze, which was perfect to kick off our hike. We opted to take the easy trail, Borrego Canyon Trail. There is a lot of soft sand through out parts of the trail, similar to a beach like sensation for your walking pleasure. It also felt like a magical forest during some areas with trickling streams. We also experienced some parts full of various sized rocks. This is NOT a child- friendly trail for little ones. As we approached parts that were more desert like, we got closer to the red rocks. There was much anticipation to the end and the trail concludes with what feels like a small dead end as you gaze into the view of the towering red rocks. Going downhill was much quicker and fun. It was an easy trail with some sections that forced me to go slower as I didn't want to slip on some small rocks. There was so much positivity coming from other hikers and bicyclists. So many good mornings shared, it was contagious. Bicyclists are one-way so they are only coming from behind you and so many were thankful for us moving out of their way. I've never experienced such polite and friendly trail enthusiasts. I'd love to return to experience this beautiful trail again.

My hiking friends told me about this route that they affectionately call "Bigfoot". It's because…read moreif you look at the route on Strava, it looks like Bigfoot. Bigfoot runs through Irvine, Crystal Cove and the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. It was about 33 miles long. Well, we extended it to include the Shake Shack at Crystal Cove and I renamed the route, "Bigfoot dragging toilet paper." We passed through the Laguna Wilderness Park and it was nice terrain to navigate. We were running out of water and the parking areas did not have water but there was the Nix nature reserve that had full facilities and what we needed to finish this massive route. I actually decided to do this last-minute on Memorial Day because I accidentally drove to work when it was a holiday. I arrived a bit before 7 AM, and the trail is well-maintained, with restrooms at the trailhead. The parking spots do fill up pretty quickly, so come early! The other hikers are friendly, and the views were great. At the start, there are pretty flowers to look at, and the air was so refreshing.

The panoramic views of the rolling hills are breathtaking and being deep in the canyon, with very few people on the trail makes you feel immersed in nature. There are multiple trails in the area, all of which are well-maintained and clean. If you go on a weekday morning, it's especially peaceful--very quiet, empty, and feels wonderfully isolated. There are several parking lots and trailheads/gates for different entry points, but parking space is limited (shouldn't be a problem on the weekday).

Such a great place to hike! We took the Lake Trail that leads to Barbara's Lake, seemingly OC's…read moreonly natural lake. It's a relatively quick out-and-back - a little over 2mi. There's also a loop that's a little longer, but our toddlers' legs were getting tired! There's not a lot of shade on the trail, so I recommend sunscreen and maybe a hat. There are some hills, but nothing too bad. There is a LOT of animal poop on the trail, so watch your step! But there's a lot to see along the way including many bird's nests in the trees, and some smaller bodies of water that are made after a decent rain. The trail follows the freeway for awhile, so it's not the quietest. I wish the lake itself had a path around it to walk. There's only a short section of the trail that allows you to see the lake, and there are a lot of plants to look through except for the area that has the info sign. Parking is on rocks and gravel and is $3 unless you have an annual pass. There's a porta potty in the lot too.
