La Cucaracha is the reason why, I grew up in Leuven and frequented this restaurant regularly. As a result I compare all Mexican I eat with this joint and often I am disappointed. The food is really good, the menu has been unchanged for a long time but like they say: never change a winning team. By the way, if you do long for some variation, you can go for their daily special. I have tried most dishes on the menu, but I typically go for Antojitos Mixos which means mixed appetizer but I eat it as a main and I can guarantee, you won't regret it: it is a flour tortilla with 10+ dishes on it. You will be filled with Mexican goodness! The service is also on great: you can feel the warmth of the people serving you, they are helpful, friendly and polite. The only minor downside is that it is always packed so they are often super busy and it is sometimes difficult to grab their attention (also make sure you get a reservation!). After leaving Leuven, I still long for the great food and service. It is more than a nostalgic feeling, every time I go back the food manages to convince me that La Cucaracha is a great eat. Nachos were flavorful and warm, a nice comfort food. But I couldn't get the usual jalapeño kick from my nachos toppings. For the combos, I wish there was some salsa on the side but there were only guac and black bean purée. The dish was overloaded with cheese and it covered the beef flavor I was expecting. I asked for some chili sauce and it still didn't satisfy my spicy benchmark. Oh dear, I had such high hopes…read more.. 1. It's tex-mex, not authentic mexican 2. It's very AVERAGE tex-mex - the tortilla wraps they use taste store bought, there are no fish tacos on the menu (literally the most popular thing in SoCal right now), choice is generally very limited 3. I ordered a burrito with sour cream, and when I got home and opened it: NO SOUR CREAM! It was literally the only thing I ordered on top, and they forgot it. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because I want to support new local businesses, and hopefully they get better. But I won't be returning till fish tacos are on the menu. 4. Perhaps most telling: none of the staff were Mexican. I don't think any are even full time. It seemed like a stall run by part time students, and the service was in line with that. So so disappointing. p.s. This place seems popular because clearly 90% of people don't know good mexican/tex mex food - the moment a decent alternative opens in the area, I guarantee this place will struggle.
