A top-notch seafood restaurant on the Ribeira. Terreiro is the sister restaurant to the popular Taberna dos Mercadores featuring many similar dishes without the queue. Its patio has a direct view towards Porto's scenic Douro River. We came for lunch and were immediately seated on the 2nd floor of the restaurant beside a lobster & crab tank, overlooking the kitchen. The menu featured local seafood dishes including the Salt Crusted Seabass often set ablaze with fire. Our Garlic Shrimp (€10.50) came out hot and fragrant, conveniently de-shelled but with shrimp heads kept for the rich tomalley. We were quite familiar with this shrimp sauce profile, which made for a tasty dip with the sliced toasts. We followed this with piping hot Shellfish Rice (€25), a rich, hearty classic main course in a tomato base with loads of clams, mussels and shrimp. The portion in the stone pot was huge and filled a good 4-5 bowls. Initially we planned for dessert. But upon seeing a nearby family enjoy barnacles, we felt more adventurous and opted for this local delicacy too. At 200g for €12, we were served a large plate of boiled barnacles which were still briny and ocean-fresh from the Portuguese coast. Twisting off the leathery skin of gooseneck barnacle actually reveals meat similar to clam. It was fun and messy with seawater squirting in the process. The bustling restaurant felt relaxed, and by the time our first dish arrived there was a steady stream of local diners and expats beside us. The service was quite friendly although slightly overwhelmed by serving all of the nearby tables. Skip it or hit it? This was one of our memorable meals and definitely beat waiting an hour for its sister restaurant nearby. read more

Yucky yuck. We order the salted cod and it arrived completely inedible and over salted. You would think given they are by the ocean their fish would be fresh but nope. We got some old piece of fish that was hard as a rock. Please avoid the salted cod completely. We tried Portugals famous sandwich since they had a small version on their menu and that was just as terrible. The bread was old and even sitting in a sauce that is intended to soften it out, it still was hard as hell. We also ordered a side salad that was disgusting - the salad dressing was just the juice from olives. Not sure how a salad can go wrong but it did. This place was a complete disappointment, with the only thing going for them was the location and view. This had to be our worst meal of the trip and possibly 2026! So sad I wasted a meal here. read more

The view and service were great and they have outdoor seating. Unfortunately the food was not to our liking with the exception of the osso bucco. The pork ribs with pork rice were really tough and had no flavor other than pork. The shrimp pasta was dry and had no sauce, although it had some flavor in it. It looked great for the photo. My franacisinia sandwich came out like warm along with barely warm fries. I had one a few days ago from A fast casual restaurant in which was much better. The osso bucco was was tender and tasty. Terreiro Restaurant was TERRIBLE. We received a recommendation to eat the veal steak. It was inedible. When I asked Thomas, the head person about it, he said that is how veal is. In other words tough and inedible. When I asked for a discount, he sulked. Eventually, he took the veal off our bill. By the way, the $45 Lobster Salad was not much better. It contained mostly diced potatoes, carrots and mayonnaise dressed with about 100 grams of tough lobster and shells. By far the most child friendly restaurant we've encountered in Portugal. Super engaged staff, friendly, joking, and poly lingual. It was fun listening to or server engage with the couple next to us in Korean. We sat outside with a view of the Douro River across into Gaia, simply beautiful. We ordered the seafood soup, clams, and the lobster rice. The seafood soup and clams didn't last long enough for a picture but I held off on devouring the lobster rice (it was amazing) for just long enough to snap a photo. Honorable mention that we didn't order is the sea bass - they serve it table side after a brief alcohol fire to bring the salt off the skin. Looked amazing and was a popular dish. This is one of the few restaurants where we want to eat more than once on a trip; foregoing novel experiences for known excellence! It's that good! read more

You can eat better food elsewhere, but the location is pretty hard to beat. The seafood rice, salt baked fish and the white sangria were the highlights - don't get the shrimp pasta (dry and flavorless). What was off putting was that the waiters pushed hard for tips, kept saying it's optional, but pre-selected a 15% gratuity option - that's on top of a 3% service charge already added on the bill. read more

This place is amazing, yes it's a long wait so if you don't mind it, then grab a seat by the water to enjoy the beautiful view while you wait. After 45 minutes wait around 2 pm we finally got seated outside. We ordered a bottle of wine and seafood stew for 2, baked cod fish, oxtail stew and extra rice. Everything was just so delicious. The seafood stew took 45 minutes to cook but it is so worth it: everything was just so filling and it was more than enough for 4 people. Generous portion of the cod fish. Great first dining experience in Portugal! Don't listen to the other negative reviews. We put this place to the test and they came through. We were super jet lagged and slept through our reservations at a different restaurant. We stopped here as it was close to where we were staying. It was busy but they were able to seat us right away at a 2 person table. The staff was super friendly, made great recommendations and was super quick and attentive given how busy they were (8pm on a Sunday). We both had the seafood soup (amazing), split the shrimp with garlic (heavenly) and we shared the shrimp pasta (I was so happy we went shrimp heavy because it was amazing). Great flavor, shrimp was not over cooked and the pasta was cook perfectly. Overall a great dining experience. I will say we saw some people get the fish salad and the whole fish and it also looked amazing. I would definitely come back here in a heartbeat... in-fact I already said I would be craving the shrimp with garlic when I got back to the states. read more

Such a fun place for our first meal in Porto. We had two types of verde wine. Both were tasty and crisp. Oysters are amazing (and very large!!) Bread (which is grilled so more like a crostini) and salad was great to start. For the main course we enjoyed the shellfish rice (more like a stew/jumbalaya) and the octopus. Delicious and highly recommend. Food was probably an /10. Service 10/10 with our server Joao. Ambiance was a 10/10 hands down. Patio overlooks the water and it's gorgeous. Honestly one of the most memorable meals while I was in Porto. We were originally going to eat somewhere else and I'm not sure why we decided on not going there anymore but I'm SO glad we didn't. We came cross Terreiro and liked that some of the locals were recommending this spot. You still get the amazing view of the Douro but it's not right by the water like some of the other restaurants. Vegetable soup: very simple, but delicious. Shrimp in garlic sauce: O M G. Sooooo good. Remembering this shrimp dish I ordered another shrimp dish at a different restaurant and was so sad it didn't taste like Terreiro's. Grilled octopus with potatoes: Again, so good. Best octopus dish I've ever had. I don't like octopus dishes. Tried one in Paris for double the price I paid here, only could eat 2 bites of that one. It was an unfortunate experience. It was recommended by our AirBnb. Very long wait for a table but understandable because of no reservation. What was not understandable was the 60 minutes to get food once ordered without waiter returning to explain or ask if we needed anything, nor the completely inedible porterhouse steak, which definitely was not a porterhouse. It was impossible to cut through with a knife or your teeth. We left more than half on the plate. I've never experienced anything like it. I am writing this review as me and my wife are waiting for our food (yes, service is bad and we have been sitting for awhile waiting for our main meal). The appetizer we had was the clam which was okay (though a bit salty). We then had the fish soup which literally tasted no better than a canned Campbell soup. .... After half an hour of waiting in between the food servings, our main meal of Octopus stew just arrived. All I can say is that the food is disappointing. Instead of having an "octopus with beans" .... The food that was served to was was actually "beans with a few slices of Octopus". We have been driving around Portugal from Porto to Lisbon with multiple stops in small towns along the way. During our 2 weeks of eating restaurant food, I can honestly say this was the restaurant with the worst service and worst food we had. read more

One of my favorite places in all of Portugal. I found this place recommended by a photographer and boy was she right. Location- beautiful setting by the river. Initially worried it was a pure tourist spot but the food was so amazing that I don't even care. We sat inside but it overlooked the river. It was perfect. We were warm and still able to enjoy the views. Service- fast and attentive Food- mind blowing! Seriously ordered wayyy to much, but it was worth it. vegetable soup- how something so simple can be so delicious salted codfish croquettes- what Portugal is known for so you better order it shrimp au garlic- finger licking good cod- amazing! seabass- this was even better than the cod! They come and debone your fish for you. I wish I had someone at home who would do that for me. Let me tell you we ordered all of this and had no leftovers. It was so delicious! I think we actually ordered more, but I ate it so fast the pictures I have of this meal are of empty plates so I cant tell. Go and order everything on the menu. Take your time and enjoy it. To be in Porto was wonderful, but to be in Porto at the restaurant Terreiro eating dinner overlooking the Douro River was fantastic! The fish was fresh, simply prepared and delish. Be sure to have the grilled Prawns (huge and tasty!). My boyfriend, who loves octopus, described the braised octopus with onions peppers and olives as the very best he ever had! It's a locals place right near the water where there are all the tourist places are. Our hotel recommended this place for lunch when we got in. We sat outside and watched people walk by and taking in the view. We had the vegetable soup (simple) shrimps in garlic/tomato sauce and the clams. Although this review is written on 5/29/16, the meal we enjoyed at Terreiro was on Saturday, May 15. Terreiro was suggested to us by our hotel, Pestana Porto for our last meal in Porto before departing for Lisbon. We were seated on the upper floor which was very comfortable, although our server, Teresa, had to go up and down a flight of stairs multiple times. She was very dedicated and our service was excellent. For our first course, my wife had vegetable soup and I had the seafood soup. Both were hot and delicious. For the main entree, my wife had the Sole (Dourado)) and I had the Gilt Head Bream (Linguado). Teresa deboned the fish at our table. The seafood was outstanding. A bottle of Vinho Verde (our new-found portuguese white wine) accompanied our meal. We would highly recommend Terreiro for a fantastic dinner in Porto. This restaurant was recommended to us by the concierge at our hotel who is a Porto native. The fact that we had researched the same establishment ahead of time confirmed our desire to have a meal here. We had 9:30pm reservations and our table was waiting for us. We had the grilled tiger prawns and the Octopus lagareiro. While the tiger prawns were delicious, the octopus was the most amazing dish we have had! This method of cooking the octopus rendered it very tender with a very delicate texture. I have had octopus grilled, in sushi, roasted, and fried. THIS was the most unique and delicious octopus dish I have ever had the fortune to taste. If you're a foodie, you MUST have this!! read more

My wife and I each ordered shrimp risotto. We received 1 shrimp each. The waiter confirmed that this was typical. I had to ask the manager to come over, and he acknowledged that the chef had four large shrimps on the side, still in the kitchen, waiting to be served. Within 10 seconds, those prepared shrimp were brought to the table. BUT REALLY!! You have to ask for the shrimp to be served, a d if you are not assertive, you don't get? THERE IS SOMETHING FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG WITH THIS ETHOS. Take advantage of the customers ,so long as they don't complain? Wrong! That is not the way to host customers. read more

And our waiter whose name we don't remember (ugh rude sorry) was amazing.
