Fantastic gem. Not because this place is the only great game in town, but because Oak & Reed was surprising and amazing. Be sure to make a reservation because this place fills up quickly. We started with the corn bread with apple butter (great texture and consistency), soy braised pork belly (melt in your mouth amazing), and Korean fried broccoli (good sauce but some pieces were too big or over breaded). The espresso rubbed venison was a MASSIVE portion, perfectly balanced with sweetness of the parsnip-apple purée and crispy brussel sprouts. The duck could have had a more crispy/salty skin which one looks forward to, but held a nice balance with the roasted turnips and wild rice. GREAT meal. We had a table of 7 guests who were all vegetarian and they accommodated us very well with delicious food. The service from the waitstaff was friendly and quick. I loved the setting even though our table was i the bar area we could look outside at greenery because of the wall of windows. On our next visit we will be sure and return this restaurant. read more

Okay. I will start off by saying. I absolutely did not make a big deal out of finding a roach in my drink as i didn't want to cause a scene. I tried to be really low key and nice about it. I've been to oak and reed before and absolutely loved it, which is why i decided to bring my boyfriend here for a romantic dinner date. I didn't come off nasty as you don't get anything out of being nasty. I wanted to see how my bill came once all the food was done and knowing i have a huge food reviewing platform if they didn't accommodate me in the way I should have then I would use my platform to bring awareness to the situation as I'm doing now. They still charged me for the remade drink and didn't consider even taking money off the bill after knowingly having a roach in my stuff. This is what swayed my decision on bringing this to the light. I thought being nice and low key about it, would lead them to not try and play in my face the way they did. Yes they are located in Middletown ( where roaches could be around as it is a mini like city) but there's no excuse why your business has even the smallest of roaches in your establishment. As a woman from NYC I know, as everyone should if there is ONE there are many more. There is never just ONE. I'm upset because though i was nice about the situation i wasn't asked by my waiter if i needed anything else, I wasn't approached to see how I could be accommodated. My waiter basically wasn't even our waiter I mentioned this issue to the bus boy who brought us out our food .. only think my waiter did was come back and ask if i wanted another drink, no apology no nothing no empathy... again im a person who could've turned up and made a scene and didn't due to wanting to be nice about the situation, and not demonstrate how angry i was in front of my partner. I had to pickup a Facebook marketplace order and had about 1.5 to kill. I wasn't really familiar with the area and was soo pleasantly surprised by the downtown area of Middletown! And this restaurant was very good! It's only about 25 mins from my house and I will return! The portions were generous the prices very reasonable and the food exceeded my expectations. I ordered the butternut soup and the Turkish eggs. The waitress very kindly asked if I wanted to have the soup first and then see if I was still hungry cause the Turkish eggs was a large portion...I truly appreciate that kind of thoughtfulness from a server. My family and I went to try Oak & Reed during restaurant week. I've been eyeing this place for a while, just never made it over. Middletown is definitely evolving and there was some nice places on the block although it was eerily quiet. As we entered, we were pleasantly surprised by the space, but when we were seated, I asked for a coat rack and was advised there was none so I had to figure out how to not have my coat drag on the floor, which was a little annoying. We all ordered from the restaurant week menu, which had some nice options and three of us ended up getting the schnitzel. To be honest, I wasn't that impressed with the food. I thought the flavors were lacking especially on the salt. The cookies were great and my family enjoyed their meals. I know this is totally something weird to complain about but I actually found the portions to be ridiculously large. I actually don't like large quantities of food. I'd rather it just be a standard portion, but made very well. We had to get to go containers because there was just so much of it and it felt weird for the price that we were paying that we had to pack our own leftovers. Since we did restaurant week, we we had multiple courses and had leftovers from all three with no place to put them on our small table. Overall, it was not a bad experience, I would definitely go back and give it another try. I just wouldn't call it one of my favorite restaurants in the area. read more

There were particulars related to the server such as; dairy free; gluten free etc. and she very patiently explained which foods could be available as requested and all food is made to order. Really not impressed. I always live by going with your gut. I called this place to order and the rep was so unfriendly. Kept saying he couldn't hear me and acted if our business didn't matter. I should have left it there, however I'm post op and my son needed to eat and he wanted to try the food. Cornbread was hard and flavorless spread had no taste. Chicken was a little dry and collards were soft and had no flavor. Short ribs wasn't tender and was cold. Burger was ok however fries were half raw. Then to add insult to injury we ordered the peaches and cream puff pastry with vanilla ice cream and the sent us some pudding pie with a slice of peach on top ( I guess they thought we couldn't read). The chocolate chip cookies were ok. We spent a pretty penny here and won't patronize again. I went twice here already with my bf for a light meal. Wine selection is great - I love a good selection of Italian Reds, and they have an affordable list with good quality wine. Food is good. One time we had a butternut squash sauce gnocci, which was divine. Such a full flavor and a wonderful use for the seasonal fruit. Excellent texture. Velvety. The Caesar salad is weird, I wouldn't recommend it. The fries are impressive. One of the only times I remember having potato wedges be actually crispy and not just soggy. Get them as a side if your meal doesn't already bring them! Mussels in white wine - classic dish, delicately prepared. The sourdough bread is so fresh and so good. The portions of food are impressive, as well. For such a fine dining experience I expected to be hungry after but ended up taking lots of leftovers home. Things I tend to care about for some reason: really lovely tableware. I love a shiny set of flatware and a modern, delicate glass for wine and water. And the bathroom has Aesop hand wash! On a rather nice day, with decent weather a visit to their outdoor seating area seemed wise. They offer a large indoor eating and gathering space, as well as an exterior patio area with cover to enjoy the weather. Initial impressions of the location and the staff were that this is a mid-upper end restaurant with some funky decor vibes and a decent amount of unique food offerings. The staff was a bit thin the day we went, and it did take some time to get seated and served water and menus, but the new normal has made this relatively common. The food and appetizer offerings, however, were outstanding! We ordered the cornbread, hush puppies, and shishito peppers for the whole party, and they were all so damn good! Luscious and dense cornbread, properly blistered shishito peppers, and crispy hush puppies with a spot-on remoulade. Of all the fantastic menu offerings (fusilli bolognese, caraway crust pork chop, pan roasted duck breast and many more) the buttermilk fried chicken was looking at me all sultry. An amazing find, about an hour north of NYC. Family run with extreme attention to details. From the decor, to the menu, to the wine and beer selection they consider everything. The portions are large so come hungry, you will leave pleased. The apps and salads were unique and fun, especially the duck tostada. I am reviewing customer service. So initially the food was excellent. I have food intolerances and I carry a card that can be presented to the chef. I shared my card, the wait staff assured me that what I ordered was allergen free. We had the duck fried rice and I had duck with a nice strawberry and arugula salad with a balsamic reduction. Delicious! 2 hours later I was projectile vomiting. So I called the restaurant and let them know what happened. I was assured that they would check to see if others had issues with the duck that night as well and then they would get back to me. Two weeks later and I've received no follow up. My disappointment is if I had a diner indicate an issue and they were simply looking for follow up, I'd follow up. This could have been an issue of food poisoning which is a real problem not just for me, but for other diners and even up stream to suppliers. I'm disappointed. read more

Such a beautiful restaurant with delicious food! I made reservations for Sunday at 4:00. We were seated right away. Our server, Cindy, was so friendly and very welcoming. She got our drinks right away and was patient taking our food orders. Our table had the Korean fried broccoli and corn bread with pear butter to start. Both were absolutely delicious! The men ordered burgers, both looked amazing! I had the fried chicken with whipped potatoes and collard greens which was an exceptional meal. The portions are large so we had leftovers for lunch on Monday. The table also shared a piece of key lime pie which was so fresh and wonderfully tart. The second time visiting Oak and Reed and what a sad disappointment. They were only offering the Valentine's brunch menu on 2/15/25 which was not a great selection but nevertheless, the food should have been spectacular! After a hair in the cornbread (which we did not even mention) we were waiting over an hour for our entrees, our eggs came out over cooked, the potato pancake was undercooked (literal mush) and not even hot! Our waitress (Erica) was less than sympathetic towards us and did not do much to accommodate my complaint of the long wait. If the food was worth it, I would not have cared but we were waiting WAY too long for limited menu items that came out inedible. Our reservation was for 1:30 and the restaurant was not even busy at that time so I cannot say what the hold up was (especially for brunch-only food). My husband asked for the drink menu again since we were waiting and Erica brought one over just to never return and ask him if he wanted a drink. Pleasantly surprised to find such a high quality restaurant. Came here to eat after an appointment with some friends. The food was excellent the wine list even better. It is so rare to find a place outside of big cities where both are great and actually complement each other. It is rare for most people in the party to agree but while kids where having great burgers. The adults were having venison. I think it was because it is generally so rare to find game in a restaurant (hard to get it prepared I guess) that we all decided that it was time to have some, and to paraphrase the good old book, ".. it was good". Wine list deserves a special mention as the wines in most places are either an afterthought or not even a thought, but here the wine list was picked to match the menu exactly and while not very expensive to have the wines are an excellent complement to any food you decide to pick.
