    Looking down the canyon

If you're driving between Sedona and Flagstaff, this is a quick little stop for some scenic views of Oak Creek Canyon. Even on a beautiful fall Sunday, there was plenty of parking. The overlook includes relatively clean restrooms, a Native American Market, and a US Forest Service gift shop/information center. En route to Flagstaff, I stopped off and spent about 30 minutes here, enjoying the views, reading the panels about the natural history of the area and browsing the market. Be aware they do close at 4 each day-and in actuality they close the entry gate sooner. I arrived at 3:45 one day and was turned away (very rudely, but who can stay mad when visiting Sedona, right?) Overall, a great scenic stop if you're driving that road. Stretch your legs, shop the outdoor market and enjoy the beauty of Oak Creek Canyon

This is a stop along the Oak Creek Canyon Loop drive. This vista view is gorgeous, especially in the Fall with the leaves changing on all the maple trees, intertwined with the ponderosa pines. There are quite a few viewing outlets with information plaques along the walk around the vista. There are restrooms available, and a small ranger station with gifts and information. There were also Native American craft vendors during our visit. Not sure if they're there everyday or just weekends. We visited on a Sunday. I would highly recommend this view point, and the Oak Creek Canyon Loop drive.

I definitely recommend stopping here on your way up to flagstaff from Sedona. It's also cooler here weather wise.

Beautiful view and definitely worth a stop! It's a very quick stop where you can stop and take pictures, take in the views, and walk around. There are bathrooms available. Additionally, when I was there, the Native Americans in the area had set up a trading post with jewelry and crafts for shopping, but this area was very crowded and I was with high risk family, so we stayed away. Looked nice though!

Nice scenic view from the top of the switchbacks. Restroom facilities were clean, though they are -- as you might expect given the location -- holes in the ground with toilet fixtures over them.

From Alfonda's Arts & Crafts of Navajoland. She initially didn't have any matching earrings, so she made them while I waited!

Whether you're southbound, from the Grand Canyon or Flagstaff, or northbound, from Phoenix or Sedona, make sure to take this route on the 89A, for some awesome views, photo ops, and shopping. The air is so crisp and clean and you're surrounded by beautiful forest lands and trees. There is a peace that overcomes you as you gaze into this vast canyon area. It's a safe overlook, guarded by rails and low stone walls, but there's always "that kid" (mostly adults) who cross beyond the barriers as they flirt with danger. It's free; there is no charge to park onsite. It does get crowded, but there is usually a really quick turnaround for parking. I've never had to wait more than a minute for a space. There are restroom facilities, but I've never had to use them, so I don't know how clean they are. You won't find any food here, so eat before or after visiting. Also, I have never been able to get cell phone service at this overlook. If you're a Yelp check-in addict, try checking in in Sedona; it worked for me. There is a Native-American crafts market here from 9am-5pm on weekends (sorry, but I cannot recall if they're also there during the week), weather permitting. Everyone with whom I've spoken has been Navajo. I only asked for reference, so that I can say from what tribe my jewelry was made. The prices are usually reasonable, but this is a market, so you CAN bargain, especially if you're purchasing multiple items. You'll find that many merchants have some of the same items, but don't get lazy! Keep looking and you'll find that as you ease on down the vendor row, there may be some unique items. And items change over the weeks, so don't think if you go one week they'll have the same items the following week; they may or may not. DD's dreamcatcher earrings, purchased in May of this year, were not there when I went back last weekend. Also, many vendors have credit card scanners (Square, etc), but some do not, or if the weather is bad, the scanners won't work, so bring cash as a back-up. (There are no ATMs here. The closest will be Sedona, @ 16 miles away.) On my last visit, I met vendor, Alfonda's Arts & Crafts of Navajoland, she was the last vendor before you got to the guy selling the hats. She had a pretty dream-catcher necklace, but no earrings to match. She immediately offered to make some matching earrings for me, on the spot. I was so impressed with her and her work that I didn't even try to negotiate a lower price. For $60, I got 2 necklaces, a bracelet, and a pair of earrings made just for me. If driving up from Sedona, it will be @ 16 miles north, up 89, on your right. You'll see the sign from the road. Support local Native American artists!

If you don't believe in heaven this place will change your mind. It is a little stopover on the side of the road. It offers a place to potty and stretch your legs. The scenery is breathtaking and makes you hold your breath at the same time. If you look down you are afraid you might fall. The driving through the canyon is white knuckling but enjoyable. This is God's country.

After visiting Sedona and on the way to Flagstaff, we decided to drive to see the scenic Oak Creek Vista. What a view. Plenty of forrest trees grown out of the cliffs. The place was so popular that the parking lot was filled up on a Monday. Worth stopping by. Don't forget the binoculars.

Such a gorgeous Overlook. The drive from Sedona up to Flagstaff was so pretty and this stop made it more special. Peaceful and stunning! There is also an Indian tribe that sets up and sells beautiful handmade jewelry and gifts. Can't wait to go back. But will have cash on me.

What a view, this was worth the trip I am amazed every time I come to the Grand Canyon.

An excellent place to stop by and have a great view of Oak Creek Canyon. Not too large of an area to have to walk to get to a good view. If you come here on the right days the local native americans often have there arts and crafts for sale. Rangers here are always informative and friendly. One of the best places to stop to experience a great view without having to spend a lot of time. =)

This place is a very cool spot to check out the view of all the ponderosa pines on your way from Sedona to Flag or vice versa. They also have native folx selling things on the walk way down, I got an opal Navajo ring and sum arrows. They gots clean bathrooms!

To see the canyon on both sides, the sunny side and the shaded side was a big difference. I do recommend taking your time going up the stairs because you will be out of breath. There is a visitor center and two trails here. The Rim trail at a pretty even 0.75 miles is great for people who want a stroll that follows the canyon rim (out and back trail). You can see the structures from the rim, but it's even better with binoculars. The Island trail is slightly longer at 1 mi, but a steeper 185 vertical feet into the canyon with a whole bunch of stairs at the beginning, and returns the same way. I guess people get too tired to climb back up since there are numerous signs warning of the steep climb back. The trail begins at the back door exit of the visitor center, which they close at 4 pm (the entire monument closes at 5 pm, so they don't want anyone to start the trail and get locked in). Both trails were great and they had informational signs along the way. I really liked the Island trail since you get up close and personal with the structures. The visitor center was standard - offering a gift shop, bathrooms outside, and information about the history and significance of the area. The ranger staffing the information desk was pretty patient with the group of tourists and determining if they were fit to do the Island trail. It's a totally different vibe from the Grand Canyon, so don't expect huge views.

Just as the days become shorter and the temperatures cool, the Aspen leaves adorn the forest with a glorious yellow hue that seems to first absorb, and then reflect, the sunshine. While not the only location for getting your Fall groove on, we found "Humphrey's Peak Trail" (and its surrounding environs) to be generous providers of the vibes we were seeking. None of the trails that we traveled were paved and their difficulty ranged from easy to moderate. However, as you travel up the mountain you'll find that the rocky outcroppings become more frequent and the hike becomes more strenuous. Before long you'll find yourself at 10,000 feet, so you'll be in much thinner air than you're likely used to and your water/rest breaks should increase accordingly. Each trail we explored was well traveled, but the buddy system is still recommended (if for no other reason than to have someone to marvel at the beauty with). Wildlife sightings are common, but it is the rare sightings of Big Foot that are the most cherished. Ample parking and portable restrooms can be found at the trailhead located at the end of Lot 1 of the Arizona Snowbowl Resort. For those interested in traditional restrooms and/or a restaurant, both are located at the resort and an easy walk from this parking lot. If you visit Flagstaff in the Fall, please don't find yourself "leaving" without experiencing the "leafing" all around you this time of year! And that's...Henry's Take. I will admit I am not much of a hiker, and still a week later am not necessarily walking the same as I did before I went on this trip, but I will also say that it was worth EVERY second of it. Havasupai Falls alone is enough to make the trip worth it with it's beautiful water falls and pristine scenery, but going on the trip with Walkabout made it 100 times better. Included in the price of the trip is transportation, pack mules to carry your stuff in and out so you don't have a heavy pack on your back, all camping fees and equipment and gourmet meals for the 3 days you are there. Who would have thought we would be fed Salmon, Chicken Fajitas and Chocolate chip pancakes at the bottom of a canyon!! The two guides who took us on the trip were so patient and kind and pushed me limits I never thought I could go. It is nice to know that next time I go to Havasupai with Walkabout, they give you the option of taking a helicopter or horse ride in or out of the canyon!! I am glad I hiked it the first time, but in the future the horseback riding looks fun as well. I was the less experienced hiker and wanted my sister to be able to enjoy the hike without worrying about me. So, I hired Four Seasons Guides for a day hike in February. We had a wonderful experience, and I can't recommend them highly enough. Our guide, Steve, was charming, knowledgeable, very experienced, and took very good care of us. We had our own packs and poles, but he had some on hand just in case. Breakfast fruit and muffins were provided as well as a hot lunch set up as a picnic and snacks for the trail. My sister was anxious to get on with the hike, and I was always stopping to look at the view or ask Steve some random question about canyon geology or history (which he always knew the answer to). Somehow, due to his expertise and great people skills, we both came away thinking we each had the perfect day. Steve took away all the worry about the weather, route, wildlife (there were elk on the trail and several donkey trains passed us) and made the hike much more fun and interesting. Also, other experienced local hikers that we met on the trail let us know that Four Seasons Guides were the best and we were in good hands. If you want a fun, worry free day I highly recommend them.
