It was established in 1655 and the oldest recorded grave is John Brown, the guy that actually purchased the land that the graveyard is on from the native Wampanoag tribe. The spooky old graveyard has lots of very old graves, memorials and plaques and if you take a look at the top of the old flagpole you will notice that it has a carved skull on top. A whole lot of famous colonial New England folks are buried here, including Elizabeth Tilley Howland who came over on the Mayflower and died in 1667 and Captain Thomas Willett, who became the first English mayor of New York. The ancient graveyard is an absolutely fascinating place filled with plaques and memorials about shipwrecks, wars and disasters. It looks a bit worn in places and could probably use a bit of TLC but then the scruffy look just adds to the spooky and weird ambiance. One of the coolest and historic colonial graveyards in New England. Over 1,000 graves here from 1622 up till 1993 and of course all kinds of hauntings and bizarre things have been seen in the area. I tried to find out who owned it and finally got a hold of a gentleman who claimed to be a commisioner several years ago that told me that the Chinese bought it and that it was only mowed twice a year! Then I was looking at some statistics that werent very promising that there were sources that said remains from plots had been flung over a wall so they could bury someone else in the plot! My heart sank thinking that my grandparents couldve been flung! I havent been back to the cemetery in awhile as I live in a different state now but I am interested to see what can be done about the state of the plots and headstones. I understand that it is a historical place and that it is ancient. However there is no excuse for it to have been let go like it has been. I wanted to buy plots if there were any available so that I could be near my grandparents but I doubt there are any left. Ponds and vets…read more The Pine Grove Cemetery was established in the 1890's and is 50 acres of gentle and mostly level ground with fairly modest memorials. It has a few larger crypts and more elaborate gravestones but most tend to be small and simple. The cemetery has a small pond in the middle of the land and lots of very old looking trees. Many veterans, especially from World War 1, are buried here and the grounds are very well maintained. There are roads that wind through all parts of the cemetery and many flowers and special personal items are included with the memorials. A very pleasant cemetery to talk an easy walk through.

The world war veteran graves are taken care of by the workers and every national holiday that celebrates their memory will see their graves receive a token of appreciation and respect ranging from a bouquet of flowers or some other symbol. I currently have my aunt, uncle, and grandparents buried there so when I pay the area a visit I see what goes on around there. If you are the type of person like myself that likes to take walks through cemeteries then you will be happy to know that this is the place to do it. It's peaceful and quiet (not all cemeteries are surprisingly!). There is a greenhouse / flower shop right nearby that is an ideal location for a visit if you're interested in buying something.

Stones and walls…read more Nathan Slade is an old graveyard that was founded around 1817. It contains over 500 graves and is still accepting new customers today. The Cemetery has a whole lot of people named Slade and the name is especially prominent on the older stones. The name Slade seems far less common as the memorials get newer. The cemetery has mostly simple stones, no huge and massive crypts or imposing obelisks. It does have a few unique and interesting ones but nothing really elaborate. Since many of the early burials were Quakers, this certainly isn't surprising. A simple and functional cemetery with a lovely and very old stone wall around it and many mature trees scattered throughout the area. A quiet and peaceful place to spend eternity.

I called Auclairs at first but was made to feel like a bother, a number, a nuisance in fact. I immediately decided to look elsewhere and came across Boule Funeral Home. Owners Tom and Wendy bent over backwards to help me and my handicapped mother. They helped us to save every penny possible and they clearly were not looking to take financial advantage of a grieving family, something I've always feared. We're not wealthy and they made sure we weren't given options that only wealthy families could afford. Tom and Wendy are compassionate, available, connected, and have kind hearts. At one point I had asked to sit with dad before the funeral. I was welcomed to sit there and hold his hand, tears overflowing, until I had all the closure that I needed to move forward- As a nurse, I often get approached by folks who tell me that I have changed their lives in one way or another- that's how I felt with Boule. Normally, I would not think to review, however after having recently had 2 funerals in 2 years at Boule's I feel the need to leave some feedback. Tom is an absolutely astounding human being. In 2017, my family lost my 16 year old sister to health complications. The loss was sudden and left us in an extremely hard place financially, emotionally and mentally. A friend of ours drove my mom to Boule's to speak with Tom. Upon hearing the story of my sister's life and how dedicated my mother was to her, Tom decided to be patient and work out whatever he could to help us give her the services she deserved without feeling pressured to think about the money right away. He was just absolutely kind, I have no words to describe it. More recently, two weeks ago, I lost a childhood best friend. His mom decided to go with Boule. Again, I saw Tom and he remembered my family despite it being two years. He asked questions and was genuinely interested in knowing how we were doing. He and his team did an amazing job with giving my friend one last send off. He even allowed us closer friends to stay an extra 30 minutes because he knew we were having a rough time. My friend was 28, we're all a bunch of "kids" who didn't expect this so suddenly. Again, Tom understanding as always was patient and kind with us and the family. *****Overall, I highly recommend going with this home. These people genuinely care for you, your family and your feelings. They aren't after the money.

The primary attraction for many tourists is Lizzie Borden's tomb, which is surprisingly simple to locate. Proceed directly down the central road from the main entrance on Prospect Street. A fork will appear after 200 yards or so; bear left and keep going until you come to a little rotary. Just off the road to the right is the Borden family plot; park close by and stroll toward it. Lizzie's stone is plain and level, bearing only her name: "Lizzie." Her parents and sister Emma are among the many Bordens buried there, and it's part of a wider family cluster. The cemetery itself is quiet. Historic without being overgrown. Solemn without feeling oppressive. The kind of place where memory feels tangible, especially when you're standing among the names that shaped one of America's most enduring mysteries. Once we were all outside of course where we thought we could conversate she then came outside and told us to get in our vehicles to leave. All of this had taken place and it wasn't even 3:00 yet. I contacted Tom, explained what I needed and he put me on his list for estimates. He was very upfront with when to expect both the estimate and potential timeframe for engraving. Written estimate arrived which included recommending cleaning (last done in 2007), cost of cleaning and cost of engraving. I checked a couple local (central Missouri) monument companies and prices were very similar. Returned the documents, authorizing cleaning & engraving, along with check for half of total. In a couple weeks, received before-&-after texts of headstone and was stunned how great this family (since 1929) headstone looked after being cleaned. The headstone was updated in late June (a couple weeks earlier than Tom had mentioned) and received a text picture of the completed work. All in all, I am very pleased with all the interactions I've had with Rex Monuments personnel in this process. I will be contacting them every 5-7 years to have this headstone cleaned.
