    Comfort Motel

We are frequent long-distance travelers, and have stayed in tons of places, in almost every state…read more This is by far the nicest motel we've ever had the pleasure of staying in. It checks ALL the boxes, especially the big one: it's CLEAN. And not just clean, it's as neat as a pin, top to bottom. It smells good (and not that weird hotel-specific sweet sanitizer smell). The rooms are spacious and well kept, and have every amenity: hair dryer, full-size ironing board and iron, luggage rack, plush chair and ottoman, desk and office chair, refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, a dozen lamps and light sources, full-length mirror, large bathroom. It's incredibly quiet, and there's a porch with rocking chairs looking over the Big Coal River. There are boot scrapers at all the entrances. Raj, the owner, is the nicest guy ever, and I don't think he allows the trees to drop leaves on his sidewalk. Local family tried to talk us out of staying here, believing there could not be great accommodations in Comfort. They were convinced the Best Western in Chapmanville was the only local motel that wasn't a dive. But the reviews on the travel sites were convincing, and we will be forever grateful we were willing to leave the highway and stay here. And we know beyond doubt that this is where we'll stay the next time we visit. We have one more night here before we drive on to Huntington, and we are already lamenting Huntington's lack of anything as welcoming as Raj and his Comfort Motel. A note to the traveler wanting to find this diamond: turn into the Marathon parking lot, drive 100 yards toward the back, then curve left behind the Exxon. You won't be sorry!!

Beautiful hidden-gem hotel at an amazing price--plus a 10% military/veteran discount!…read moreIt's a cozy, mom-and-pop-style hotel with incredibly friendly staff. We discovered it during a long, late-night trip, and when we arrived, we were greeted with genuine Southern hospitality. Even that late, they offered us a meal and got us checked in quickly. The rooms were very clean and stocked with all the amenities you could need. The river view is absolutely beautiful, and the whole area is peaceful and relaxing. If you're in the area, I highly recommend going a little out of your way to support this amazing place and the wonderful people who run it! Sorry--photos are from the website. I forgot to take any while visiting, but the pictures accurately show exactly what the establishment looks like.

It faced the Elk River, so we enjoyed beautiful scenery of the river, surrounding mountain, and a bit of morning fog. For breakfast and dinner we ate at Tudor's Biscuit World and Gino's Pizza and Spaghetti House. Service was extremely fast, personnel were very friendly, and food was delicious. The front desk area of the hotel also hosts an antique shop, as well as a fabric and yarn store. The entire area is so quaint - we fell in love with it.
