A small school with a family feel. We sent both of our kids through Oakridge from Kindergartn to 8th grade. They both went on to Crean Lutheran High School and master's degrees at Concordia, and Cal Poly/SDSU. This school is small enough that the parents have a say in things that are heard by the staff and acted upon. It's an over due review...my kid has been with the school since TK and now she is at 5th grade. She is doing excellent academically bc they are teaching a grade ahead, so she felt challenged but not overwhelmed. The class sizes are very small about 10-20 students per class and for younger kids, the teachers are so sweet and loving and they get a lot of attention due to the class size. Ms. Wolfe and Ms. carnahae got teaches of the OC before and they truly are wonderful teachers that makes thing fun for the kids. I still remember all the projects very fondly. 5th grade at Oakridge is considered middle school. At first, I was worried if it's too early but they prepped them well and these kids are ready. They are so independent communicating with the teachers and checking and submitting their own assignments online. And the middle school teachers are all so wonderful! My kid especially loves the science teacher, Mr. Thatcher bc he is funny and also explains things well to them. He got nominated as teacher of OC this year. They also offered a lot of after school programs for middle school, they started having their own sport teams for boys and girls. This year, my kid started showing interesting in volleyball and basketball and it's very good opportunity for her to try bc practice happens at school and most games were at the campus as well. She now told Me she wants to try soccer next as well. This place might not have the fanciest structures but it's the people and the community matters that makes things great! We transferred over to Oakridge from the public school system this school year and could not be happier. Our son is thriving under the care of excellent teachers who genuinely want to see him succeed. The curriculum at Oakridge goes above and beyond what he was learning at IUSD and he is challenged to think critically. He went from being bored at public school to looking forward to going to school and lessons at Oakridge each day with Mrs. Hernandez. He is on the Honor Roll and has also received the Principal's Award. You can tell how each member of staff genuinely cares about the students. Mr. Joly stands outside each morning to cheerfully greet every parent and student. Don't let the one star reviews scare you away because if you read between the lines, you can see they are one off incidents or misunderstandings. It's amazing how fast others run to leave a negative review based on things not going their way. We started at Oakridge 3 years ago, when my son was in 3rd grade. We moved to Orange County for my oldest who was given an opportunity to train full time for his sport. We still have our home and business in NorCal, and the school worked with us every time we had to go back north. My son came from a public school and I was worried if he would be behind entering Oakridge. Not only was he welcomed with open arms, he is thriving with straight As and being pushed to learn things he would have never learned in public school. Another concern we had was how will Oakridge do with food allergies. As long as you communicate with the school and educate your child not to eat things you are not ok with, there should never be a problem. When he was younger the teachers would text me and ask me if something was ok before giving it to him. Education is the most important when it comes to allergies! Oakridge is a small school with a lot of big hearts! The teachers truly care about your child and want to see them succeed. Since posting my experience with Stephan Joly, Theresa Andrews, Lyndsey Alanis (TK teacher who is no longer there) and Oakridge Private School, I have since taken Oakridge Private School to court and Stephan Joly and Theresa Andrews decided to settle and reimburse me for the loss of wages. Because they knew they were in the wrong and did not want to go to court and go before a judge. They knew that they did to me and my son was very wrong. Stephan Joly is one of the most dishonest human beings I have ever met. He knows what happend and how he treated myself and my son, and God knows what happend. God will always know what happened and what you did. I pray that you never treat anyone( especially a person of color) the way that you treated me and my son. I would like to update my review. I have had multiple children who have attended Oakridge over the course of 10 years including preschool and middle school. Thus, I feel well qualified to post an updated review about Oakridge's strengths and weaknesses. Strengths: 1. Computer class teaches fundamental skills necessary for success in life and high school in a practical way at an accelerated pace. 2. Spanish class is quite good and the kids come out with good basic vocabulary and grammar knowledge. 3. Middle school science teacher is a wonderful teacher and students love him. 4. Grammar lessons. 5. cursive is taught in 2nd grade and required in 3rd grade. 6. Small classes sizes. Weaknesses: 1. Math: the math program is weak. While the books and curriculum claim to be a year ahead, the material Is simplified and the kids do not master it, so they are not actually ahead. Kids from Oakridge are not able to keep up with the grade level math they are supposed to be at when they leave Oakridge. 2. Too much focus on memorization rather than critical thinking and analysis, which are essential for success in high school. 3. Grade inflation. There is a culture of giving kids the answers to tests beforehand or using the actual test as a study guide so they end up with a high grade that does not reflect their actual knowledge or understanding. 4. Inability of the school administration to take constructive comments or parent input. As long as you say nothing, they like you. As soon as you speak up or question anything, you are no longer valued and are told to go elsewhere. 5. Academic dishonesty. A few years ago several parents realized that the standardized testing results advertised online were inflated because kids were given the actual tests with answers ahead of time. The administration tried to brush it under the rug, lied to parents about who was responsible, and pretended like it never happened. No proactive measures were taken to retest or report the incidences. For a school that says it values integrity, this for me was a deal breaker. Several long term families pulled their kids out because it does our kids a disservice to keep them at Oakridge. read more

If you are looking for a preschool that has a focus on both education and hands on learning, look no further! I honestly couldn't be any happier with Oakridge. We had our older son do preschool at Montessori, and while it was education driven, there was not enough focus on arts, sports, stem, and just plain outdoor play, which is why we decided to look elsewhere this time around. Oakridge does an amazing job with creating well rounded students. My youngest son who was very shy to begin with (Covid baby), has blossomed into a such an outgoing smart boy! Shoutout to Ms. Katie who has helped my son with his social-emotional skills! He is also excelling in STEM and Spanish class! Yes, he is learning Spanish is preschool! He also takes a soccer class, they do yoga and tae kwon do, music, dance, and they provided several on-site field trips. He is learning everything T-K students are learning in public schools at the preschool level. Ms. Brittney, the director of the preschool is also amazing! She is so warm and inviting to all the parents and great with communication! She knows what's going on in all the classrooms at all times and knows every student by name. Mr. Jolie, the principal, always has a smile on his face. He is also very kind and welcoming. You can tell he truly cares about the school and his students. We are in our third year at Oakridge and are loving it. The teachers are top notch and genuinely care about their students. The community is so inviting and welcoming and I feel totally at ease leaving our kids there everyday in the loving capable hands of the Oakridge teachers and staff. The academics are challenging and rigorous in the best ways. One of the things we love about the school is the diversity. While I don't make a habit of talking about race I feel compelled to mention (in response to a negative review that I feel in no way represents the school or It's leadership) that we have felt nothing but respect from all staff members including and especially, the principal, Mr. Joly who leads by example when it comes to character and conduct. As the face of this school your lack of accountability and dismissive response to a students experience is disheartening to say the least. you see Mr. Joly, because there are so few students who have seen oakridge from preschool to 8th grade it would be extremely easy to identify me. Due to my familial association with the school in combination with the mistreatment I endured at my time there, I do feel it is safest to write this review anonymously. I really don't appreciate your deflective tone and I think it is absolutely comical that you reached out to Jane daniels, the owners daughter, as well as her daughter heather, their grand daughter, to like your response as if that grants you any more validity. So much for the integrity of yelp, right? Another laughable thing to note is that when I attended oakridge school counselors did not exist. So it's really funny that you would bring that up as a non-solution. Oakridge was recommended to me by my sister-in-law who spent years researching and directing kids to the right schools and colleges based on their educational goals. I have since sent all three (3) of my beautiful daughters to Oakridge and it has proved to be an incredible blessing to them and our family. I wanted to send my son (pre-k) to a school where he would have a bit more academic preparedness than a typical preschool who learns through play. A friend recommended Oakridge, I was a bit hesitant because the tuition was a bit high. Now that the school year is over. I can happily say I'm extremely happy with this school! I highly recommend it! My son can read, write, tell simple basic time (o'clock), recognize coins (money) and their denominations and solve math problems. He's going to start kindergarten in a few months and he already has all this knowledge! The classes are small (12-15 kids) which is great because he got more attention from the teacher. The teachers are amazing, front office staff are helpful and the principal is out every morning greeting everyone who comes to school! How awesome is that!? Please ask or do a search on this school FIRST. I wish I did. I couldn't understand why my child started to have breathing problems since she started school at Oakridge. I found out later,from our pediatrician, that the probable cause is because this school is placed on an old LANDFILL. I had wondered why all the buildings at the school were temporary and why there were not any residential homes nearby. IN ADDITION, I found out through another parent that the teacher did NOT have her teaching credentials. I did not know at the time that private schools are not required to have teaching credentials. My daughter is in a great school now. She is excelling, enjoying her studies and her breathing problems have been resolved since leaving Oakridge. Happy Mom and happy child !!! read more

I have attended this school and the best part about it was leaving school. A decent amount of teachers are decent or good.

Where to begin? It was an okay experience in elementary school (1st-4th). However, from fifth grade on, the school becomes a toxic environment. - The middle school teachers specifically are overly involved in students' personal lives and talk badly about students behind their backs (especially the computer teacher Ms. Shader). - Ms. Shader publicly outed secrets in front of my class. - Inappropriate comments were made to middle school girls about their clothing by the school's middle school principal Mr. Joly. - I had one teacher who left mid-lesson and instructed me to continue to teach the lesson to my class. - A few teachers got very involved in my "relationship" in middle school (asking me questions, telling me not to date him, etc) -Ms. Shader instructed my friends to fade me out of the group - A faculty member took my phone from me while I was in the bathroom - I was sat with "troubled" kids to -- as my teacher put it -- "keep them in check" - I had a teacher get incredibly angry during class and she ripped up all of our exams (the same teacher also told us if we had an A in the class then we were allowed to take a nap) - The school handbook said girls were not allowed to wear any makeup besides clear mascara for whatever reason - Ms. Shader called me and my friend names (we were in 4th grade...) - Ms. Shader had clear favorites (and was transparent about these favorites) and was mean to pretty much every other student - The athletics program is weak and borderline sad - The school is one big hallway made up of temporary classrooms/trailers. However, these "temporary" classrooms seem to be permanent given they have been there since the 80s - There are no locker rooms for kids to change in for P.E. classes (kids have to change in the small bathrooms) - Ms. Shader told my friend that I "couldn't keep my hands off of older boys" when I was speaking to a friend of mine in an older grade There are a number of odd rules and an overall questionable structure at Oakridge. Many teachers acted routinely out of line in numerous ways. I have heard about bad experiences from many other previous Oakridge students. Oakridge has been the best thing for our family. Our preschooler transferred first and went from not wanting to attend school, to loving her school, her teacher, art, singing, reading, you name it! The kid doesn't want to leave and has developed a (pre-K appropriate) love of languages. Our second experience was even more profound. Our lower grader was an above avg student in a chaotic public class. ( we volunteered in the room and were aware of the situation). Was having anxiety and emotional meltdowns at home (to which our child was aware and was asking for help). We had an appointment to get help and around the same time had been talking of moving to Oakridge, the following year. We actually decided to move at the end of year. Our child adapted quickly, made friends, is more challenged and engaged, and the at home issues disappeared overnight. The cost of private was a challenge for my family but after seeing the difference, my only regret was not moving sooner. I used to go to Oakridge as a student all the way up to middle school, and this is my honest review: In the beginning Oakridge felt really good and the atmosphere of the elementary school was great. The teachers had time for one on one conversations and for someone who was shy like me, that was great. :) Later things definitely start to deteriorate in the educational department after the 6th grade. Some teachers would resort to turning on movies when they didn't feel like teaching. It wasn't until I moved to a public school I realized how average the education system was. I personally don't think it's right that Oakridge always marketed themselves as a school with the best education because in reality it's pretty bad (in the later grades). From personal experience, I can also say the main issue of this school was the principle (because he was never open to criticism). Some kids attending Oakridge were not too pleasant either. I also wanted to talk about the campus. I'm pretty sure this isn't Oakridge's fault because they probably can't do anything about this, but the area the school is located may not be good for kids with breathing problems.. whenever the wind blew the dust would get out of control due to the establishment next door. I found myself constantly using allergy meds. Your probably better of at Fairmont if you want a small sized classroom with good education. read more

We moved her here after a bad experience at another school, so she came in a couple months after the school year started. Mr. Joly and his staff were very kind ensuring her transition was as smooth as possible. Preschool to 8th grade. Sent my son there after transferring from Fairmont Private. The staff at Oakridge were great. Education was excellent, teachers were outstanding. The directors actually did care about their children and listened to what the parents had to say. Would I recommend this school? Absolutely! As a private school, tuition isn't too bad. Even ex-sheriff Corona sent his kid there, but don't let that deter you. If you're looking at a alternative to public education, go to Oakridge and talk to the staff. read more

Amazing school! I have been a parent for the past 13 years, with both of my daughter's attending this school. My eldest daughter is a sophomore at OSCA (Orange County School of the Arts) and she is currently a straight A student, enrolled in several AP and honors courses. She is thriving in High School and we attribute her tremendous success to the education and character building that she received throughout her enrollment at Oakridge Private School. She started in Pre-K and went all the way through the 8th grade. Her PreSAT and ACT scores have been quite impressive too. She quite often reflects on her education and experience at Oakridge and she thanks us for giving her such an incredible education with a loving and compassionate environment. She still keeps in contact with some of her teachers and she will cherish the memories, guidance, and enrichment that she received while being an Oakridge student. I have an 3rd grader that has been enrolled since preschool. She is also a straight A student and she has the test scores to back it up. She's in the 99% in every subject and she is eons ahead of her cousin in the same grade, who is enrolled in a nearby public school. She absolutely LOVES going to school every day and she is extremely happy and thrilled to be an Oakridge student. I am not saying this to come off "boastful" about my kids. I am merely trying to give an honest opinion of my parent experience and I am sharing my children's experiences as well. I just happened to log on and I read some reviews that I feel are not reflective of the school. I realize that people have different experiences, but it's hard to place an honest and comprehensive review about a school that you attended for only 10 days. I do not like that people use Yelp to air their vendetta's and only tell one side of the story. It comes off vindictive and I wanted to share my experience which is quite different. I have been a parent at Oakridge for over 13 years, with two kids enrolled that have totally different personalities and likes, and both have had nothing but positive experiences at Oakridge. The staff are loving, supportive, and wonderful; the teachers are exceptional; the class sizes are small; the principal is always there for the parents and kids, eager to help in any circumstance; and most importantly, my children are happy, safe, and at least a grade (or two) ahead. I know it's tough to gauge a private school, but if you are looking for a small, family oriented school with great academics, a wonderful music program, awesome STEM program, an amazing art program, after school sports, friendly kids and cool parents, try Oakridge. My daughter started here this year. She is in pre kinder and loves it! She has learned so much in just the few months of being here. I love seeing how excited she gets when she comes home singing her Chinese songs, telling me what she learned in Spanish and all about the music. So I got a reply from the principal. Not once did he address my child and what happened to him. I did not mention that the principal called me at work and pulled me out of the exam room while I was examining patients to tell me that my son was no longer welcomed back at school and don't come back the next day. Very caring and professional...when I came to the school to get my son's stuff the teacher apologized to me and said she didn't agree with the school's decision. No, nothing was mentioned about that..he only addresses my comment about their education. My older son goes to a near by private school and we all know how Oakridge is ranked. Our child has attended Oakridge for 7 years, and our family's experience has been positive. We have enjoyed the smaller environment the school has to offer, with the class sizes providing the opportunity for students and teachers to really get to know each other. Teachers and administrators also also very accessible to parents, and responsive to questions or concerns. We have been happy with the well-rounded education our child has received so far, and also the self-confidence he has developed in Oakridge's encouraging and nurturing environment. From an early age, kids are provided the opportunity to make presentations in front of their class, participate in singing and music, enjoy PE or play a school sport, and learn how to play musical instruments. Academically, we have been happy with Oakridge, and found the teachers to be a high quality, dedicated bunch. While the lower school experience was a positive one, we have been impressed with the middle school teachers. Their enthusiasm sets a good example for the kids, and begins developing their study skills for life after Oakridge. We have found Oakridge to be a school with just the right balance of academic challenges and time to let a kid be a kid and explore outside interests. For us, Oakridge has been a refreshing departure from the "race to nowhere". The class sizes are reasonable, the teachers work hard to keep the kids interested and engaged, and the homework (thanks in part to a study period built into the schedule) is extremely manageable compared to other schools. As a result, our daughter rediscovered a natural love of learning, which had begun to slip before we transferred her there at the start of 4th grade. We were told the middle school curriculum works a "year ahead", but didn't pay much attention. Our daughter was happy, thriving and engaged with the course material, which was good enough for us. As an 8th grader, she has shadowed some of Orange County's most prestigious high schools this year and has seen that they are, indeed, studying the same material that she is covering at Oakridge right now. Less homework. Less pressure. More joy. AND a better education? No one made that promise, but it's exactly how things played out for us. When time came to pick a high school, she had a lot of options thanks to the academic preparation she received at Oakridge. We were thrilled that her first choice was the school where the faculty seemed most enthusiastic, engaged, respectful and attentive to the kids. This is how she was treated at Oakridge, so it felt more like home. To be clear, she was not coddled or babied there. They had high standards and she was expected to rise to the occasion. But as she goes through life, selecting colleges, clubs or sororities, jobs, spouses and communities to live in, we are thrilled to think that she finds the happy, engaged, optimistic people familiar and anything else, foreign. She got this message as a youngster, and we think it has now become a permanent part of her identity and expectation. We owe that to Oakridge. We have 2 grandchildren at Oakridge and they are far more advanced in their education than our 2 grandchildren in Texas. Our first grader is learning multiplication, division and fractions while our Texas first grader is only learning addition and subtraction. Also the Oakridge students learn to play musical instruments like the violin, ukulele, and guitar as well as learn foreign languages such as Chinese and Spanish. Besides all of this they love the atmosphere of the school and their teachers! read more

This school is very academic. At first I guess I really didn't know what that meant, but after sending my son there for a month and a half, we pulled him out and put him in a different private school. Our son is smart, but also very active, and it took him a while to settle into a kindergarten environment. They also do not have nap or downtime, which was a difficult adjustment for him. I wasn't convinced that the teachers were taking the right initiative to get my son where he needed to be, and the school was not very open to hearing the parent's point of view. This school seemed to be more about the money and status than the students. I was disappointed. I guess my end advice is, consider the unique qualities of your child and if this is the right environment for him or her before you make your decision! read more

Oakridge has provided a great experience for our child thus far. Preschool was an exceptional adventure in learning- the curriculum was fantastic coupled with the use of a smartboard and other computer technology. The teachers are wonderful and bright and the staff are friendly. The only misgiving I have is they recently replaced their nutritious meal service with a subpar alternative comprised mainly of fast food. We selected Oakridge Private School for our kids after carefully reviewing ALL of the schools in the Villa Park, North Tustin/Lemon Heights, Anaheim Hills area both public and private. Having sent our first child to pre-school elsewhere we were discouraged to find children being sent home in tears each day for little things like forgetting to wear your belt with your uniform that day. We believe school should be a happy place, and fun, to encourage learning. So we left where we were in the first grade with our oldest daughter Mackenzie and headed to Oakridge Private School. Eric and Emma both followed Mackenzie in their time to Oakridge Private School where the atmosphere is always 100% positive, smiling and happy. How is the education and what are the deliverables at Oakridge Private School? Excellent! The Burry's, who founded the school have always been true to their beliefs and what works for the Burry's works for us. Our kids thrived at Oakridge Private School. Small class sizes, personal attention, positive atmosphere, great friends (I can go on) all enabled our children to complete all grades at Oakridge Private School; grades 1-8 and finish their education at the top of their class. They competed in Academics, they competed in sports, they completed their STAR testing with exemplary results. My daughter Mackenzie subsequently attended Villa Park High School completely invested in Honors and AP courses and graduated Summa Cum Laude in Math, Chemistry and Physics. I don't believe she ever got less than an A. She now attends NYU, was just admitted to NYU's Tisch Film School, the world's #1 film school much to USC's chagrin and is currently studying abroad with NYU in London this semester. So far she's traveled all over Europe while achieving high academic awards as a Scholar/Athlete playing volleyball for the NYU Violets. Oakridge Private School was a great part of making all of this success possible. Couldn't be more proud of my daughter and Oakridge Private School. My son Eric is like Mackenzie and will graduate Summa Cum Laude from Villa Park High School. He is also a Captain of the VPHS Tennis Team, 4-years Varsity and was Century League Doubles MVP last year. Eric's Oakridge Private School preparation enabled Eric to amass a singularly awesome and much-more-than-well-rounded high school resume; Eagle Scout, Boys State, NHS and so much more. He too has never received a grade less than an A fully vested in the toughest Honors/AP courses VPHS has to offer. He will now attend The University of Notre Dame in the fall double majoring in Business and English (he won the Language Arts Medallion among other things upon graduating VPHS). He's also going to dip his toe into exploring Industrial Design as a major. Both programs are ranked tops in the nation by Bloomberg, US News, Forbes and other well read publications and school ranking authorities. Emma just left Oakridge and is a freshman at VPHS. Was Captain of the VPHS Varsity Volleyball Team which won the Century League for the first time in school history and amassed the best record the team has had in school history. Academically, Emma is right on track and well able to perform at the highest VPHS Honor and AP course level. By the way, VPHS is also the #1 academic high school in the Orange Unified School District and VPHS does an amazing job sending their top students to great colleges and universities. Emma LOVES her high school experience. Yes, our kids all worked exceedingly hard at school but I can tell you that Mackenzie, Eric and Emma as well as my wife and myself owe a great deal of the OVERALL success to Oakridge and an Oakridge Private School preparation and environment. I am not making any of this up. I tell the truth because when you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything :) If you are smart you will like Oakridge. If your kids apply themselves you will like Oakridge. We found that Oakridge classes ALWAYS kept our kids ahead of what everyone else in their grade was doing at all the other schools. Maybe some were on the same point in places, but not overall. We are diligent in our research and comparison. Though I am from Greenwich, Connecticut my wife is from Villa Park. We know the landscape well. Oakridge Private School is a winner. Oakridge Private School will increase your child's odds of success. We bless the Burrys, we bless Oakridge and we bless your children and the decisions you will need to make in choosing a school for your child or children. All I can tell you is that we are very lucky that there is an Oakridge Private School. We were luckier we attended. Oakridge has given all of us a very good journey and I would gladly repeat everything if I had to do it over again. Do not waste your time and money sending your child here!! The mediocre administration, staff and the principal Ms.Valbuena was really disappointing and no decency to make the school a better place for the kids that need extra help! The Villa Park Public School is way advanced and better academically than this Oakridge school and for social skills as well. If I could, I would give a zero stars to this school. read more

My children have been at Oakridge Private School for the past four years. I have been exceptionally happy with the overall positive atmosphere of the school. My children feel very happy and very included. I have watched them blossom. The school also encourages public speaking and being on-stage (something which scares many adults). The children have class performances in front of the school and the parents, there is a Holiday Program for the families to attend, there is a talent show...just to name a few. I have also been happy that as a parent, I know how my child is progressing and what I can do to help further the education. There is a very good outreach of the teachers not only to the students but to the families. There are also so many additional opportunities at the school-arts program, music program, Spanish program, Chinese program in additional to the regular curriculum. read more

My boys have attended Oakridge Private School since pre-K, they are now 13 and 16. I am so glad I made this choice for them and their future. My eldest just completed his first year at public high school and as you can well imagine I was very nervous about his experience in such a big school environment coming from Oakridge where the class sizes are small and everyone knows you and your child (like one big family). He flourished in his first year of high school and when I received this email from his biology teacher I knew that Oakridge was to thank for her kind words. Quote: (Your son is doing awesome!! We absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Oakridge. Our first time on campus after meeting with the elementary principal Mrs Valbuena, seeing the classrooms and teachers and feeling the overall warmth and obvious academic excellence throughout, my husband and I immediately knew this was the perfect school for our children. Next came the daunting task of telling our children. Like most kids, they didn't want to leave their friends. To ease their anxiety, Mrs. Valbuena offered to have our boys visit Oakridge as students for two days to get a feel for it. When I picked them up after their first day they were beaming from ear to ear. They loved everything about it and asked if they ever had to go back to their "old" school. Needless to say, we enrolled them that day. We transferred from a public school in Anaheim Hills due mostly to large class sizes and never looked back. To date, we are continually amazed by the quality of work, the enthusiasm that our children continue to have everyday to go to school and consider our decision to send our boys to Oakridge, our parenting coup! read more
