I think it's odd hotels don't clean the top décor blanket on the bed. I had to strip that immediately as there was what looked to be pepperoni pizza mushed into it. Very large and noticeable by the way. The drapes were also covered in schmutz, so the luxury level kind of drops when you see things like this. We got a junior suite and the room was very large with an incredible view of the harbor. I mean the view alone was worth the money. The bathroom however, was not large. All the reviews I read said the bathrooms are big and great. Mine was not. It was cramped and the door to the shower made no sense at all. My 5'2" 120 pound mother would have a hard time entering this shower. It feels super gross to wash yourself and then have to rub your body against a wall to get out of the shower. Also, another thing people really seem to fail to mention is that this hotel had NO air conditioning. I read a lot of reviews before I stay at a place and was shocked that people don't mention it. There is a small fan in the closet though and you can get ice from the bar to makeshift your own a/c.

It is not cheap, but good value for money if you want to push the boat out a bit for a special break away.

No place was nicer, no one was more friendly, and no hotel was as warmly welcoming as The Barriemore in Oban. From the jovial fellow doing some outside work who helped us get parked straight and who then got us geographically situated, to Marc who got inside and showed us around, to Jan, who I believe checked us in, everyone was so nice and friendly. We were in Room A which has a bit of an up-charge -- but, if the room is available it's well worth it. Room A even has a writing room/dressing room! The extra large bathroom was well-appointed and clean. Best of all it had a shower stall and not a tub that would require a struggle to get to in and out. On a cold morning you'll especially appreciate the towel warmer. The bedroom was extra large with a king size bed. What made the room extra special however was the two comfortable sitting chairs facing several large windows looking directly out on the Oban Esplanade, the harbor channel and the entire Oban harbor. Enormous ferries regularly barreling up the channel were remarkably near the shore, so close you don't need binoculars to get a good look -- except that binoculars are provided! There's some nice sherry in the room, whisky in the hallway and coffee equipment with all the necessary supplies in the room -- plus some extra treats. The breakfast room was bright, cheery and well decorated. There's a nice cereal/fruit/yogurt buffet plus a menu for table-served, cooked-to-order items, including, of course, a full Scottish breakfast. My scrambled eggs with 3 sausages were well-cooked and delicious. I especially liked the unusual (to us, anyways) berry compote (?). The Barriemore is at the very end of the Oban Esplanade meaning it's a 10-15 mins. Walk down to the restaurants and shops. But especially if you've been on the road a bit too long, or if for any reason you need a comfortable and friendly respite, the walk is definitely worth it.

Even more so that in apparently the last 3 years no real improvements have been made. The Caledonian Hotel Lounge & Restaurant looks weathered, faded. Oban is a nice sea side town and billed as "The Seafood Capital of Scotland" -As I am allergic to fish I needed a reasonable place to eat to avoid issues. As this hotel is smack bang on the harbour near the train station and the ferry port, one could easily be mistaken that they would at least provide a decent enough meal not containing or cross contaminate fish with other food substances. No this review is not about experiencing any allergy issues. I did not. The above is to clarify why I chose this hotel as a lunch venue. Which is mainly because it was serving something else than fish and was prominently located. Also the prices looked very reasonable for an hotel. (Yes, that should have rung bells, but really look around the Oban and you'll know where I am coming from) So they get 1 star for location. For my lunch I requested the Gammon & Pineapple and Chips, Something I normally wouldn't, but from everything else that was available it sounded the nicest. They did asked how I liked my gammon to be cooked, but they may as well have not bothered. Dry & Bland. The gammon was dry, the salad was dry too and the pineapple was even dryer. Come on?! Dry salad and pineapple? They are supposed to inject some juice and freshness to an otherwise heavy slab of meat. Not in this restaurant. The chips were the rustic variety from Iceland basic range. - I am not bothered reviewing those. Besides being dry there was no flavouring to be found. What is it with food in this part of Scotland? Why can't I have a full flavoured meal? I actually ended up doing what I despise anyone doing in restaurants: I smothered the most of the plate in ketchup. Then used the pepper and salt in such a way that the WHO may have to set a new health warning level.. Not impressed with this. I wasn't expecting anything outstanding, but certainly wasn't not expecting this level of food delivery. I wasn't overly impressed with the staff either, I guess efficiency is a hard to come by trait, but they were friendly and happy to help. We even saw a girl waitress chasing down a customer as she left her coat when leaving. 1 star for good effort. Some other little things were nudging the star rating down. Credit Card machine not working. Menus dirty and torn. I was advised by a fellow diner that the hand dryer in her toilet wasn't not working and no towels available. One of our lights wasn't working, the shower doors don't seal, so water sprays out onto the bathroom floor. Also there was some liquid hand soap in the bathroom that had a really strong and nauseating smell every time I washed my hands. The walls are also super thin so that you can hear all the noise from the hallway and the rooms adjacent. We were located next to a gentlemen's who seemed to have emphysema; he was coughing all night and in the morning like no ones business. He also seemed to be opening and closing the noisy shower door right behind our bed every 5 seconds. Breakfast was weird. First the dining Room was way too cramped with tables (that were a little too small) and people. It was hard to get to and from the buffet table, and multiple trips to the buffet were necessary because they didn't really have adequate tableware available at the buffet for everything. For example, they didn't have any cups to carry milk back to the table or any small dishes to hold jam for your toast. Basically, you have to go back to your table to get a serving vessel and bring it back to the buffet to put stuff in it. This probably wouldn't have been so annoying if the room weren't so cramped, making it an ordeal to get from one end of the room to the other. Anyway, it was okay for one but I'm glad I didn't have to stay there longer.

Colin also gave a map and directions to our friends to help them find their B & B. He went way above the call of duty there. Then as they left, he showed perfect comic timing - just as the glass door was shutting on our departing friend, whiskey loving Paul, Colin said, "now would you care for a welcoming dram of whiskey?" the look on Paul's face through the glass was perfect - sad hungry puppy face. Colin laughed and so did we. Only one thing I would do differently - make sure you get one of the rooms with a sea view. Worth the cost I think. Breakfast was great with a few choices besides the standard full Scottish. We had pancakes with yogurt and fruit and it was great. The house is close enough for walking, but far enough to be quiet. You can walk out the door and across the road to sit on the esplanade by the bay.

In the old days when l used to travel to the islands quite frequently this was the one of the bars…read morethat l used to go to, they sold rooms for less than £20 per night and that wasn't that long ago, they may not have been the best but they where coumfterble and served their purpose. On the street level there is their bar that may not be the cheapest in town but they do have a good atmosphere and serve a good pint. Sports channel always on & jukebox available at the weekends.
