Due to COVID-19 and school closures, I'm currently unemployed and have no medical insurance. I've really been struggling with some mental health stuff, and since no psychiatric provider in the area will see me without insurance, I called Dr. Lafferty's office and asked if they would be willing to see me for this issue. I requested to know the amount I would need to pay ahead of time so that I could be prepared to pay it when I arrived. Upon arrival, the receptionist told me my visit was going to be less than the amount I was quoted over the phone. I questioned this and was very wary because I came prepared to pay the higher amount and didn't want to receive a bill. After needlessly arguing with me, she finally called the office manager and THEN told me that I'd actually have to walk over to their business office and sign a payment plan since my account had a balance. Um... okay? Fine. Office manager was beyond hateful and rude to me. I admit I was pretty ugly back to her out of frustration, plus not feeling good mentally in general (THE ENTIRE REASON I MADE THE APPOINTMENT). I sign their payment agreement, walk back to the main office, and the receptionist then informs me that since the business manager didn't like my attitude, they are refusing to see me and I'll have to reschedule my visit. All of this over wanting to pay more than the initial amount the receptionist requested. I break down into very real tears and BEG to be seen, she relents, and I see Dr. Lafferty. He gives me 30 days worth of rx meds and recommends a few places for me to try and call to make further appointments since I really need to see a psychiatrist, and he will see me back in a month just in case I need refills before I can get in with someone else. I called his office several times to let them know that the doctors he recommended would not take me as a patient since I do not have insurance, and to see if they knew of any other resources I should try. No one ever bothered getting back to me. Today, I followed up with him again for my refills. Front desk receptionist still has no clue what is going on in my account, and borderline argues with me again about the fact that I'm asking to pay MORE (not less, MORE) than what she's asking me to pay. She calls over to business manager and it is very clear to me based on the half of the conversation I could hear that they are engaging in some sort of gossipy laughing nastiness at my expense. Once I finally see the doctor he was very kind and understanding and offered to give me six months worth of refills on my medications to help me save some money and to hopefully give me time to find a more appropriate provider. The nurse in the room then proceeded to give me a prescription that was only for 3 months, not 6. When I tried to get her to correct it, I was basically told "check out is that way". It is difficult enough to actually seek help when struggling with mental health issues. I'm a single mom with two kids who rely on me to do my best, and I cannot believe that a group of women could be so petty and spiteful and nasty to someone who is looking for help. I'm totally disgusted with the way I've been treated, and would have made a bigger scene today about not getting the proper amount of refills if I weren't scared of them refusing to see me in the future, as I cannot seem to find any other provider willing to see me at all while I'm not insured. These people should be ashamed of themselves. It is unfortunate that a group of good providers are getting a bad yelp review because of their staff. I've worked in doctor's offices myself for the past 9 years until this pandemic mess and would have been fired had I ever treated a patient the way these girls treated me. *****UPDATE: I spoke with someone at their office today who assured me I could come pick up a corrected copy of my prescription with the right number of refills. When I got there, the receptionist said the doctor wasn't in to sign it so there was nothing they could do, and suggested I just use the copy I already have. I told her no, that was the whole point, I don't want to have to come back three months early and pay out of pocket when the doctor clearly gave me six months of refills, and then when I asked her why I was told I could come pick up a correct one when they knew the doctor wasn't in to sign for it, she got nasty and said "well I'm not the one who told you that". Not a single person in this office is willing to take any responsibility AT ALL, it's incredible!
