I love stationary and small local stationary shops are my weakness. This shop looks small from the outside but is plenty spacious inside. It was adorably decorated with thoughtful displays. Every nook and cranny was brimming with exciting new finds. I spent a pretty penny on a variety of small items but it's worth it to be able to shop in person which is not often the case. I'm not familiar with the journal brands, but I know they carry some specialty journals. They have wrapping paper and cards, too. They had a pack of miscellaneous papers/tags/cards that I bought. I'm not sure if they have that all the time or if if was just when I visited. If the weather's good, they have the community typewriters outside. When I decided I wanted to write a special letter to my aunt, I knew I needed to Go Big. So, I asked a friend where to get stationary and the immediate answer was Oblation. We set out on just as the snow was really starting to fall, and I called to make sure they were open. They told me they would be open at least for a few hours, though they might close earlier than usual. They also advised me that they normally opened at 11 but if we showed up early (and we did) they would open their doors. The entire conversation was pleasant, helpful, and courteous and it also showed they both flexible and rational in the face of bad weather. Walking in was a real treat. The place is simply stuffed with paper-related temptations - handmade wrapping paper, beautiful stationary and cards, fountain pens, and, on an unrelated note, hand-crafted chocolates. (It was just before Valentines Day but I bet they are always on offer.) I explained what I wanted and was taken over to their stationary section. The associate was very helpful, she went through all the options, and I found something absolutely perfect. I also obtained a birthday card made of handcrafted paper (and writing on that with a fountain pen was a revelation, believe you me!). I have written my letter and I sent my card and I am delighted by the quality of both products. I am glad I was able to give something extra special and support a small business gem, artists and craftspeople, too. So, let's talk cost. This is not a place for those whose only concern is cost. I could have gotten stationary on Amazon, or maybe Office Depot. I could gotten a card a Walgreens or Target. And, I would have paid a lot less. But, that wasn't the point. I wanted to give special gift to both people. I have found that handwriting a letter and sending it snail mail has become something special. It is a way of telling that person they matter, and so the stationary and pen I chose was also part of that message. Same with the card - I gave a handmade card because they are rare and it will be remembered. So, head over to Oblation. Maybe you are into Origami, maybe you enjoy Watercolors, or maybe you just want to give a gift that shows a little extra caring. Whatever your reason, Oblation is a solid choice. read more

Oblation is amazing. I can't count the number of times I have been to a stationary store that simply sells some wrapping paper, gift bags, greeting cards, decorations, and cute random stuff from signs to games. They often feel like random assortment stores versus stationary stores, but Oblation is the real deal. Located in an older building Oblation has inks, paper, pens, and the ability to make the most fantastic looking invitations that I have ever seen. I flipped through this exquisite book of samples and ideas with a sudden desire to have some reason, some excuse to have a need for one of their invitations. They were so marvelous! My best friend in the meanwhile struck up a conversation with an employee about ink. This was no mere talk about color but about ink composition, density, flow, and yes color was actually mentioned as both are on a hunt I fear neither will succeed - their perfect idea of blue. He lit up for days after thinking on that conversation because it was the first time ever he could have an intellectually in-depth conversation on a topic such as ink. They had an assortment of pens as well. If you have a used fountain pen you don't know what to do with Oblation is always looking for some! The second hand market is strong. I've been to Oblation a handful of times to shop for stationary, and it's always been a lovely experience. The shop is so wonderfully curated, there's something for everyone. I love their selection of typewriters and journals. They have more to choose from than any other store I've been to! Specifically though, I really want to call out their design team. While creating custom letterpress invitations is no easy feat, Oblation made the process super fun and very fulfilling. My wife and I created our wedding invitations in Adobe InDesign while living on the east coast, had them sent to Oblation in Portland, and were able to send them all out from the east coast to our friends back out west. Talk about a great effort done remotely! The Oblation team was so helpful in sending over proofs and suggestions for what we could do to make sure the invites came out just right. Not only that, but they did a fantastic job packaging the invites and getting them over to us. Everything was super neatly organized, and came out beautifully. Working with Molly at Oblation Papers has been amazing! The product is just gorgeous very high-quality. Everyone there listen to the edits that we wanted to make were able to make them quickly and easily and had a very quick turnaround considering they were making the paper from scratch. My daughter's wedding invite had a creative envelope with picture Insert that they were able to do, handmade embossed paper and ribbon with wax seal to finish the product. It was absolutely beautiful. It had a good wait closed easily and made a wonderful presentation for her wedding invitation. One of the best stationary shops I've ever been to. They're up to date on their pens and ink. Not all but a good variety, and better than what I've seen in the Bay Area. They have a lot of cards, and make their own paper; as well as customizing. They sell typewriters as well. Had a very weird interaction there today leading to this three star review. I've definitely been there before and the service has always been friendly, accommodating and very helpful. Today, I was on a conference call but I did definitely turn my phone away from my face to greet the cashier. I in turn was met with a very sour look and no response at all. Basically she just rang up everything and stood there staring at me without saying a word for the entire interaction. Quite interesting that this was her interaction and demeanor on Valentine's Day when I clearly came in to buy a card for what is supposed to be a happy day full of love and happiness. For sure was not the issue/case on this faithful meeting. The card was Nice and the great service that I had experience previously I'll keep this rating at three instead of a one. I for sure wasn't being overly loud while I was on the call looking for a card and I did take the time to let it be known that I was pausing the conversation so that I could have interaction with the cashier. Not sure what this whole thing was about but again, definitely left a sour face/taste in my short term memory. Might have to think twice about going back should I need any stationary in the near future. read more

When one walks into this store, you can immediately tell it is a wonderful place to browse for something special. One can only admire the quality and variety of cards, specialty papers, and choices of fine writing instruments. Their selection of new and gently used vintage pens are unmatched anywhere in the region...the staff are both friendly and attentive in a quiet positive way, always willing to point out specials and demonstrate their knowledge of the offerings available in stationary, cards and my favorites: pens. I have been collecting and using good writing instruments for over 35 years in various states and countries. I am happy that this store exists and that the staff actually knows about the various pens sold. The only downside to their new pen prices is that they are full list price...no discount. National companies can match their prices if not actually offer discounts and also no sales tax..just shipping cost.. Amazon Prime can be a viable resource on some pens for less than list price without shipping cost...Blicks Art Supply around the corner, carries Lamy pens...that offers some competition...selling though does not infer knowledge of what is being sold by Blick Art Supply. I have not asked. I like the folks at Oblations. Their team knows what they sell and they readily share that information. read more

Yes, this is the paper store of my dreams. It has a lot of space for cards, stationary, papers and whole body of other papery things. Listen to the classsical music, and hear the two little parakeets. My niece picked up some wax to seal her letters, love that. My sister picked up a travelers journal/diary. I didn't get anything for myself because I knew if I did, I might go crazy and leave with a couple hundred dollars with of items. The store is really organized so it doesn't look haphazard. The employees are somewhat cold but what do you expect? They have on premise press operations and looked to have their own merchandise on the floor. They also have some vintage pens. This store really speaks to my Victorian soul, and I hope they will be around for a long time. It's time to pick up the pen and paper. read more

They truly go above & beyond and have great attention to detail. When I initially reached out to order samples, they personally contacted me to customize the samples based on my preferences. I really appreciated this and did not have that experience with any other vendor I looked into. Oblation makes it super easy to put together the content for the invitations. All I had to do was provide the event information on my side and they took care of writing all the language based on the invitation style I wanted. Throughout the whole experience they were very transparent about the pricing and they didn't nickel & dime me along the way. Shipping was super quick and packaging was thoughtful. Although I live in San Francisco, I have family in the PDX area and we visit frequently; on every trip, a visit to Oblation is essential and I always find beautiful cards, stationery, pens, and other sundries to support my postal "habit." I am particularly enamored with their Letterpress Express Monthly Subscription. Every month, I get a surprise assortment of greeting cards, including small gifts and USPS stamps to use! If you're like me, you send tons of birthday cards, thank you notes, and condolences messages. Now I never lack for the perfect card to express exactly how I'm feeling. Additionally, I ordered some custom writing paper and envelopes. The consultation was easy and enjoyable. I didn't really know what I wanted, but I definitely knew what I didn't want. The staff guided me expertly through the choices, listened as I griped about small changes I'd want, and then delivered a beautiful set of personalized writing papers and envelopes, packed in a box with tissue paper to protect it. Where has this paper store been all my life? Randomly stumbled upon this store while going to get ice cream and a beautiful space and service. The outside with a type writer caught my eye then the cards displayed on the inside. The feeling of being overwhelmed but in such a good way! I only stayed on the side with the cards as I was drawn in the various sections and love the organization. I picked up two wedding cards and checkout was in the middle of the store. The prices were reasonable and I would say a better value for hand crafted and beautiful cards compared to other boutiques or little stores in Portland as they had more decor on the front and offered more varieties. The staff was quiet and helping another customer while I was browsing. It's like you get transported to another time or can just get lost within the store as there is so much to see.
