The ocean beach is a 3.5-mile stretch of white beach with few tourists and no high rises, basically the waves and the seabirds on the westernmost border of SF, adjacent to Golden Gate Park. Beautiful long stretch of a beach (about 3.5 miles worth) located in the Outer Richmond neighborhood (and Lands End Trail isn't too far from here) with free parking and is dog friendly for those pups looking to stretch their legs and have some fun in sun. This beach seems to be less populated by tourist and more so with locals. According to our friends (who are from the area), this beach typically isn't crowded. This seemed to be the case when my husband and our little girl dog came on a Thursday morning around 10 am. This large beach does have a few fire rings, in which you can have a bonfire. But these fire rings are only found between stairwells 15 through 20. Although the waves look like fun, please note that that swimming is not recommended here, as the rip currents are very strong here (there are signs placed to warn you). If you are a beach person (or your dog is a beach bum) and have nothing to do on an afternoon, consider spending your time here (it can get cold and windy here by the way). Please note that there are very few restrooms available, with only 3 available. One is located on the other side of Great Hwy, from Sloat Blvd to Judah St (One on Sloat, Taraval and Irving St). But am not sure if they are currently open during the pandemic, so do plan accordingly. read more

I like long sunset walks on the beach... oh! Oops.. this is Yelp. I'm a total beach whore, day or night, year-round; doesn't matter which season it is.. it's always beach weather! Ocean Beach, by far, is my all-time favorite spot. It has it all !! Sand dunes, cliffs, cave, hike, shells, boulders for interesting views, structures, and views for days. It's such a long continuous stretch with enough space that it feels like you're on your own private beach. Sure, it gets busier towards Land's End and the Sutro Baths, but by then, you're so busy with nature's playground that it doesn't even matter. For the active folks, there's a stairway up by Sutro Baths that takes you onto the California Coastal trail. For the scenic folks, there's a cave path that leads to a nice viewing of the ocean and a concrete slab to chill on (if you dare climb pass the railings). Rocks and boulders are abundant to clamore upon for better sunset views. During certain seasons, the beach is littered with giant sized sand dollars. EVERYWHERE. I'm not talking about those tiny dime-sized ones in SoCal beaches. These are the size of your fist! No, not super saiyan's fist, but big enough. Sorry, no other seashells though. The best part is being able to share this amazing spot with your best friend. Like all places in SF, Ocean Beach is dog friendly. That wins extra points in my book! I wanted to be greedy with this place and not share, but a place this great is no secret. Ocean Beach is so beautiful, I'm sure it's made plenty of panties drop, regardless of fog city weather. read more

May places have changed over the years in San Francisco, but the Pacific Ocean at this Ocean beach seem to remain the same. From the scent.. the sand dollars, the breeze, the sands that linger in your hair, and the solid portion of ground where your feet sinks in by the shoreline. This place is nostalgic for me and I'm sure for many others as well. This is worth stopping by even as a tourist. Although I would not recommend parking by the cliff house with anything exposed as it has become a smash and grab area. Along the entire ocean beach, there are plenty of parking to choose from especially when you're down by SF zoo area. read more

Ocean Beach is beautiful on a clear day, but bleak and dreary on a foggy day. Ocean Beach is located in the western part of SF, and spans the Richmond and Sunset districts. Typically this area doesn't get good weather, so when the sun is shining and there's a gentle breeze, Ocean Beach is a pleasant treat. Right now getting to Ocean Beach is a little bit cumbersome and very trafficky as the Upper Great Highway, which eventually connects to Highway 1, is currently closed to road traffic. That means there are fewer ways to get to Ocean Beach, and fewer ways to traverse the entire length of the beach. Parking can be quite difficult, especially in the more popular areas (e.g. Lincoln Ave to Judah area) given that there are a bunch of businesses there, and the vicinity of the N-Judah turnaround. Parking definitely is more limited when the weather is good, as locals all want to flock to the beach (yes, even during COVID). Anyhow, if you're looking to park, you have better luck past Noriega and southwards on the Great Highway or in the 40's avenues parallel to the Great Highway. My usual route? I usually like walking up from Noriega to Beach/Park Chalet along the paved trail parallel to the Great Highway. For any Pokemon enthusiasts, there are a bunch of water pokemon along this trail, and even more in the Beach/Park Chalet area (which is right next to Golden Gate Park). Definitely check out this beach when the weather is nice. But even then you still might need a light jacket in the event of any sudden fog rolling in or strong chill. Otherwise, skip if weather is foggy and dreary. read more

Favorite go to childhood beach! After spending the day in San Francisco before it was time for me to go home I said I had to go to the beach even if it was 50° and nearing night! It's just as beautiful as I remember, far and wide, strong winds, and high tide. Perfect sand that's hard from moisture so it doesn't stick to your shoes or skin! I was riding my bike through this park thinking it would be nice to see the transformation. I like that it is a park. But after my 1 hr ride to and from this park. I spent 30 minutes cleaning my bike because of all of the sand was eating up my energy. If I knew this park will not receive cleaning up the sand I would avoid it. My road bike is no longer suitable on this road. You will need a big fat tire to ride this park. This is riding my bike I visited my friend from Daly City to the sunset and it took me almost an hour to get there. Through sunset blvd then merge into the Golden Gate Park to get on 19th. It use to take me half the time. There has got to be a better way. read more

Ocean Beach is a great beach next to Golden Gate Park. If you park in the right lot, you can see the windmills inside the west edge of the park. There's three and a half miles of sand and surprisingly, most of the visitors are locals. Not sure why more out-of-towners don't end up there, but that's what happens. At one time, extensive sand dunes separated Ocean Beach from the rest of San Francisco. Late in the 1800s, a steam railroad was added to bring guests to a posh resort. The Cliff House and the Sutro Baths, the latter of which is now ruins, came later. I love to bring lunch and watch people and the seagulls come and go. read more

Came to this beach cause it was right across from the restaurant we had reservations to. The beach is ok. Way better than Galveston Tx thats for sure. Lol. There was a lot of debris in the sand probably from the storms they had In January. So I was a bit hesitant walking through barefoot. Once you make it closer to the water, the area was much cleaner. I was able to find my first sand dollar which they actually had a few wash up while we were walking through. It was nice to walk along the water and watch the surfers ride the waves. Collect sand dollars. And watch the doggies chase the birds. Lol. It was very relaxing. Bring your blankets. Find a clear spot and chill in the sand a bit. Very nice way to escape the "city" for a while. read more

wild. This is a review for the very long beach at the west end of SF...have been coming here since I was very young almost since I was born. I recall playland. The dangerous tunnel at Judah. The old great highway where people used to drag race and I too drove very fast. Overall it is much cleaner and safer now both on the sand and on the human made surfaces. This is not Coronado or Kaanapali, but if the weather supported it would we not have all the carnival stuff and shops and crowds? From Fort Chronkite south to Pescadero there are lots of cool spots. Most could use better restroom facilities...I recommend stops at all. Slowly. Bring a book and snacks. read more

It was a really nice sunny labor day weekend this year so I wasn't surprised to see a lot of people on the beach. We decided to pick a somewhat isolated spot to get away from the crowd as much as we could help it. Where we were was fine, but near the water there were just so many people who didn't seem to be even remotely attempting to respect the shelter in place order - many of them just walked around without any mask on, as if nothing at all were happening in this world. It was foolish, of course scary, and definitely dangerous especially when people started to get comfortable and take the current ongoing covid situation lightly. I wish there were someone with some authority there to monitor the situation and how close of proximity people were gathering. Regardless, overall it was a really nice day to be at the beach. The water was blue, the san was white and hot, and our dog was definitely super excited to be there. It was a great day to be oustside and lay down your beach towel and just hang out. The beach seemed clean too despite the much partying that had been going on since the start of the long weekend. read more

Permitted times: 6am to 9:30pm in the 16 (free) fire pit rings between Stairwells 15 to 20 provided by the National Park Service on a FCFS basis. Tips: BYO firewood. ABSOLUTELY NO WOOD PALLETS. THESE CONTAIN NAILS & nobody wants to step on your rusty nail barefoot. Totes not a good time. Accelerants such as lighter fluid not allowed, "clean burns" only (is there really such a thing tho?) Put out your fires with water & not sand which only is insulates your coal/firewood. Easy peasy to bring a bucket and scoop up some free ocean water to do so. Reminders: No glass allowed on the beach. They also say no alcohol but who we kidding. Pls pack out what you pack in. Plenty of trash receptacles throughout which may or may not be hella full depending on if the sun's out of if Karl The Fog is hovering over The Sunset. Parking lot closes at 10pm daily. Rangers occasionally come out and shoo people away after hours. read more

Love this beach. I love coming on a weekday because there is plenty of parking. I wouldn't swim here as there is a risk of rip tides but it's still great for lying on the beach and listening to the waves or also just getting your feet wet in the Pacific. There are a few public restrooms available along the beach which I really appreciated because finding a public restroom in San Francisco is like a full time job! Also the bathrooms are clean and well maintained. All in all a great city beach that is definitely worth a visit! read more

The city of San Francisco needs to put many more rip tide warning signs up. I live on a hill overlooking the beach, and I've seen Coast guard search and rescue boats, helicopters, fire engines and ambulances out there searching the waters many times. I've seen a big muscular kayaker nearly drown in the Seal Rock area. I'm aware of a group of children who drowned in ankle deep water. The wind coming off the water will blow sand in your eyes, nose and mouth. Most of the time, even on warm, sunny days, you can't relax on the beach without a warm overcoat. read more

The hills of San Francisco can be an obstacle in getting to the actual beach if you were like me who was walking. Don't think you will get that sexy bikini shot without freezing. Maybe worth? Grandma in me says NO lol 2. Firepits: bring your own firewood, curfew is 930pm. I hear you get slapped around if you don't abide. Kidding. They do check though. 3. Tip: don't stand in the way the smoke flies, your lungs will think you became a chain smoker. 4. At first driving past Lands End you think oh what a beautiful site. As you drive closer and park it's a whole different view. I remember this beach being so clean back in the days. Now I am so disappointed with the sight of this place. It's filthy and smells like piss. The area needs a major maintenance!! Im so surprised people are brave enough to hang out on this beach. There's no telling what type of bacteria, fungus, shit or needles you may find. Granted from afar, the beach looks decent but there is so much gross up close. The filthy tagged up walls with dog poo bags lying around, use the garbage cans pet parents!!!! You weren't lazy to pick up the dog poo, now find a garbage can and throw the bag in there!!! That is so annoying! The benches need to be replaced, the stone walls can use a fresh paint, definitely need more trash cans and repaint the parking lots. Everyone just guessing what's a parking slot. And with all the kids curious to look through those view monitors. Parents keep your children away from those filthy rusted waste of space! I hope someone is paying attention to the sight of these beaches. Summer is here and we need a safe place for families to come back to! read more

Bay Area natives know this, but for tourists and visitors, SF beaches aren't the kind of beaches you lay out and play in the water (unless you like frigid water) HOWEVER, on a clear day Ocean beach is beautiful to sit out and watch the waves crash! You can also walk the sidewalk lining the beach (from end to end is about 1.5 miles) and if you walk up past the beach and go up the incline you can catch the Lands End trail and get some beautiful panorama shots! On the weekends it can feel a little crowded because there's youth soccer, adult volleyball, and rugby on portions of the beach. I don't think I've ever had an issue with this place having too many people! Other beaches can get overwhelmingly crowded sometimes and due to recent events it feels a little uncomfortable. Not super clean sometimes but majority is. Great place to stop by at sunset and grab dinner somewhere nearby afterwards. Parking is a little confusing though. read more

I came to this beach numerous times during my trip to San Francisco and each time, it was fairly quiet and super clean. During the day, we walked down the hill from Land's End (couldn't hike it since it was closed off due to the govt shut down) passing the Cliff House. On separate visits, I was able to enjoy the sunset and long walks along the water. This isn't something I do often (or ever, tbh) since NY beaches are pretty filthy and cannot compare at all. If you're lucky, you'll get to see all of the sand dollars on the shore. Parking spaces around here are tough to snag, but not impossible. You'll just need a bit of patience, but its worth it. read more

Of all the times I have visited SF, I never thought about visiting the beaches, as I thought they don't really exist in SF, but was proved wrong. My SF friend (actually from Oakland) had us meet up here to hang out, and play with her dog. We got here earlier than my friend, as she got stuck in traffic, so we walked along the long sidewalk along the beach to the end and back. It was super windy when we got there, but the wind did disappear an hour later. The beach is enormous, a lot of people are out and about, but because the beach is so big, everyone was well spaced out so it did not feel crowded at all. There are many fire pits burning, makes for a great BBQ spot while watching the beautiful sunset. A lot of dogs roams around without their leash and the shoreline is super breath taking. No one really goes into the water because of the rip currents, but letting the waves crash up onto your feet is the next best thing. If you love long walks on the beach, this is the beach for you. read more

A couple weeks ago when the heatwave was really hitting the Bay Area, it was the perfect opportunity to come to the beach! Social distancing here is pretty easy, and beach goers did well at keeping 6ft in distance which was nice. The only hard part was parking. If you are going to park within the neighborhoods, plan to park 10 blocks up from the beach on a busy day. Came here with my social bubble and we had a blast. The sand was crazy hot, which means the water, which is typically ice-cold, was pretty manageable! Loved that they had lifeguards on duty because there are parts when you go into the water that can suck you out right into the Ocean, so be careful and never turn your back to the ocean! Bathrooms are kinda scarce, so you'll have to hop back across the great highway to find one. In my last job, I was lucky enough to drive by this beach almost everyday on the way to/from work and the sunsets you can catch here are so beautiful when you the weather permits. As we enter our SF Summer (August-October), it's definitely worth checking out if you are tired of the same ol parks and water to dip your toes in the sand! At night it gets super cold, but on a clear night with no fog, it's one of the prettiest parts in the entire city! read more

September 7, Labor Day Weekend, Monday 10AM Parking - Very small, lot was closed due to Covid and weekend holiday anyway. We got lucky with parking being two blocks away by Java Beach Cafe. Beach - Lots and lots of people were crowded and resting towards the entrance at Sloat but easily dispersed and spread out if you walk five minutes away. The waves and sands felt really nice on my feet. There were sand dollars everywhere! It was my first time touching a sand dollar in its natural habitat. My dog had lots of fun running around off leash and playing with everyone who walked by. The waves are really nice. We saw lots of surfers. read more

Is it the best beach in the world? Well quite frankly, no, it isn't. Ocean Beach is nothing like what you'd find in Marin or on the Central Coast. It isn't the bluest or the clearest with the softest sand and the waves aren't as magical. Despite this, it still offers a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It's just a short trek over the Bay Bridge from the East Bay. In the summer, it makes for a wonderful way to cool off. Ocean Beach runs parallel to the great highway, and there's a nice walking trail located right beside it. The waves will sometimes leave an unusually foamy substance on the sand that I've only seen here at this beach. Although it gets crowded, I've never experienced it with an overload of people like you'd find at Baker Beach. The wind is blusterous and the waves are strong, but it still always feels so calming. If you're lucky enough to come here during a time when nobody else is around, take full advantage of it. There are a few benches located on the walking path where you can sit and have lunch. Some people like to make bonfires here when it's permitted. But no matter what, you should always bring a jacket and maybe even a blanket if you can because it gets super cold. I'm super grateful to have Ocean Beach so close by. It's a great local beach that will forever be hailed as a San Francisco favorite. read more

I took a Friday off during this quarantine, packed my family up with the idea that if this place had people we'd turn around, but thankfully it was fairly empty, just a few families and fishermen, and it was a nice recharge. I've been here before and it's one of my favorite parts of San Francisco. It's a forgotten land of what one moves to SF for. Tourists may not even know this exists if they don't do a little exploring. Wild rugged coastlines, salt air, fog and chill vibes and that's always the case. There is a ton of parking available, you just have to be on the lookout. It's adjacent to the park, a bike path, Sutro Baths are nearby and overall the Inner Sunset is a chill hood with lots of little local neighborhoody spots. On #thankfulthursday, I'm thankful for this San Francisco beach and gem that offered my family a relaxing carefree afternoon. read more

It was a beautiful day, one of those sunny and warm winter afternoons. We had never been to Ocean Beach so we decided to headed there. Once there, since I am in a wheelchair, we realized other than the parking there wasn't any way for me to get closer to the water. We noticed a restaurant across the road from Ocean Beach, on the back side of Golden Gate Park by the windmills. Being a little hungry, we decided to have a relaxing 2-1/2 hour lunch on 2/27/24, while watching the surfers. What a amazing beach. There wasn't a single space in the Ocean Beach parking lot. We parked up the street, not bad, you'll always find parking, you just may have to walk a distance. They have a public restroom, it's questionable. The beach is chilly and mostly filled with fishermen. When we were there the beach was filled with sand dollars. Many were whole, It looks like they just washed up. Some were there a lot longer and had been eaten by birds and were completely white. There is a bike/jogging trail right to the beach. read more
