For those of you who don't know, Sandmann's has a free city tour (where offered) that lasts about 3 hours. However, if you are then interested in other tours (Alternative, Old Town, etc.) you have to pay for them. Here, this is not the case, the company offers three different tours (City Tour, Old Town, and Gamla Stan (I think)). All of them work on a free (tips only) basis. I spent literally a whole day going on all three tours they offer... and there is enough time to grab a quick bite in between and head to the next one. The guides I experienced the city with were Ellen and Ben; both of them were awesome! They were informative, high energy, and friendly. Tours were a good combination of seeing lots of stuff, as well as hearing detailed, but not boringly so, explanation of what we are looking at, the story behind it, and how it related to the city. Tour length of about 90 minutes was actually quite nice, especially when you consider that you can take all three of their tours for free. As for start locations, they are both easy to get to by the T-Bana. The brochure details where the first and third tour meets, but more detail of the second tour would be nice. Guides are holding signs, but no the much more visible umbrellas.

However, on the next stop, I noticed our guide was holding up a few pictures to provide context to the tour and the pictures were kept in a "Free Tour Stockholm" folder. By this point, I realized I hit the jackpot. Turns out, the tour only started 10 to 15 minutes before I joined at lasted for at least an hour if not longer. Our guide, Lee, was awesome. He gave us an excellent overview of the city and made recommendations on which spots were worth taking a closer look later on. We even took a group photo. They offer tours of the city and old town (schedule on their website), so I hope to be able to check out the first few minutes I missed of old town and experience the city tour later this week.

This was one of the best tours I have ever been on (free, paid, or otherwise). I highly recommend it to anyone new to Stockholm or even for residents to possibly learn new things about the city. I would send any family or friends on this tour. The tour was so great that the next day I decided to take their Söder Tour. Ellen was very enthusiastic and kept the crowd engaged despite the poor weather. I love the concept as most tours cost a hefty sum. If you like the tour you can tip your guide whatever you feel compensates them, but if you dislike it you can walk away at any point or not tip. If your guides are anything like the two I had, you'll be happy to tip. I found both guides much more willing and able to give advice about places to see than any paid guide. Try it, you can't lose!

What a wonderful evening of dining and boating around Lake Malaren. Our travel agent had booked…read morethis for us as a part of a day of touring when our cruise boat had an overnight stop in Stockholm. We never would have even thought of this so we are very happy she found it. The boat is quite small and looks like nothing on the outside. But, once we boarded the small vessel we found a tiny dining room crowded with white tablecloth tables set for an elegant evening. It is tight in there, but so worth it. Large glass windows so everyone has a good view throughout even if you stay at your table. Everyone begins with drinks as we leave dock, with some people staying at their dining table and others venturing out on the small deck for a drink. After that the pre-ordered meal begins. Our meal had been ordered weeks before online, and what was there that night was not the same. It was still divided between a fish meal, a meat meal or a vegetarian meal. Oh well, although it was not what we expected, it was all wonderful. I am guessing the menu changes regularly. I had fish, beginning with a starter of pickled herring with new potatoes. My wife had a vegetarian starter, but it was covered with caviar, so much for all vegie. Still, she liked it, as did I. My second course was a fish dish in a light dill sauce covered with tiny shrimp. It was outstanding. I forget what desert was but I believe I liked it. In between the main and dessert, the boat was docked at the other end of the lake with a wonderful evening view of the Drottningholm palace, and many dinner guests grabbed another drink or glass of wine and just sat on the deck admiring the scenery. Except for the initial menu confusion, pretty much a perfect evening. Meal is paid in advance, but drinks are in addition at the time. Our boat was the M/S Prins Carl Philip.

Being from Minnesota, the area actually really really reminded us of our own national treasure, the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area. The landscape looks very similar and I'd guess (though I haven't looked at a map) that the two areas are similar latitude wise so that probably makes sense. The thing that was most surprising to us is that here at home, we have to drive six hours north almost into Canada to reach our favorite wilderness area, and here in Stockholm, you can be out on the water and enjoying nature in under half an hour from downtown (which is really urban and you can't even see the water). It's a really interesting mix of things and all in such a small geographic area. OK so if you choose this boat tour, as others have said, it's about 2.5 hours and basically takes you out and makes a loop. The boat is a nice boat ... large, with both indoor and outdoor seating,. So really you should be more than comfortable on your journey, though I can imagine that in the summertime and the height of tourist season, these boats are probably pretty packed. We were there in March, so the boat was less than half full, which was great. If you plan to sit upstairs outside to get the best possible view, bundle up. Even if it's warm out, it will be cold up there. The views are magnificent and the crew was super cool about letting you roam around the boat as you wished to take photos. The tour is also narrated, and our most impressive tour guide did the tour narration in English, German and Dutch after surveying the people on the boat to find out what languages they speak. I have no idea how many languages this gentleman speaks but he literally repeated everything in three different languages and fielded questions. Very impressive. The boat takes you by a lot of cool stuff, particularly the waterside amusemement park that sits on the banks of the water. But other than that, quite a value for the money and a really really wonderful way to see Stockholm!

"Viking Baltic Sea Nations Conquest 2019!"…read more SITREP Til now, I'd been on a Spring Break trip aboard Carnival Cruise Lines years ago from Long Beach to Catalina Island, then Ensanada ("W00T! Senor Frogs!") and back. Good times, good times... But cruising on a Royal Caribbean registered vessel - The Serenade of the Seas - took my cruising exponentially to a who other new level. Add to that this cruise was 7-Days (rather than just an extended weekend), and making ports of call to the nations of the Baltic Sea, INCLUDING RUSSIA !!! THE SETUP My beautiful, maniacal friend Savanna M. - and fellow hardcore Yelper - was the genius behind this mad plan! I first crossed paths with this "Lovely Lady of Traveling Amazement" at the "Yelp Spring Break - Ft. Lauderdale 2015", when I met her and CM Blue A's brilliant & stunning Elite Crew: great ladies I've enjoyed being tight with since. In the meantime, I grew quite jealous following Savanna on Yelp, Facebook and Instagram as she racked up visits to every continent on the planet, and random islands, including freakin Iceland! And another precursor to this fun story is that I first flew off the North American continent myself in March/April 2018 to attend Savanna & Trevor's wedding in Exuma, The Bahamas. So..... ...when it comes to trusting ANYONE'S International Traveling Skills, I have to give mad props to Savanna's genius. Thus when she and her family & friends invited me to go to the Baltic Sea with them, I could not quell my *jazz hands*, I was so enthused! ARRIVALS! We all arrived in Stockholm, about 20 in our group, all at different times from different locales: from England, from the Bahamas, from Chicago, from Ohio, and me coming in from California. Some where already in Stockholm for days. Some where in Copenhagen, Denmark for days before and then flew in the day of the cruise. I got in from a direct flight from San Francisco just the day before our ship's departure. I crashed with my good friend John L. (who was on a writing stint there) who took me out for dinner & drinks in Old Towne Stockholm (Pirate and Viking bars, hell yeah!) and then we went clubbing in the Entertainment District that night [I got into a serious sleep deficit that I was not able to catch up with the entire trip.....] SHIP ITINERARY The travel was laid out: =Day 1 - Departing Stockholm, Sweden =Day 2 - Traveling around the Baltic Sea, enjoying perfect sunrises & sunsets on the water =Day 3 - A day on the Island of Visby (Sweden), enjoying the interior of the Gotland =Day 4 - A day in Tallinn, of the (former Soviet) Republic of Estonia =Days 5 & 6 - Two days in St. Petersburg, Russia, enjoying the realms of Czars & Czarinas & Ballerinas! =Day 7 - A day in Helsinki, Finland, and mixing with the Philosopher crowd! =Day 8 - Arriving in the morning back to Stockholm Sweden TRIP & TRAVEL LOGISTICS The trip was incredibly well thought out - it really was segmented into three (3) major parts - there was: A. THE SHIP ITSELF - like a magnifent hotel-casino-resort at sea, this was an island unto itself. I could have decided to just stay on the ship all 7 days and I would have been just fine! Restaurants, Theaters (saw 3 movies anyways), Bars upon Bars upon Bars - some for just drinking, some for wine tastings, some for karaoke and other loud get-togethers! And lots of tours ON ship - touring the ship's galley (kitchen) was actually a highlight of my onboard fun on the ship! B. SHIP EXCURSIONS! These are the day trips we take when the ship berths in the city port. Our day in Visby was a ship excursion that was a lot of fun. It included CHEESE SAMPLING, Old Medieval Churches and a cool Train Trek through the interior of the Island! C. SAVANNA'S EXCURSIONS! These were planned by my yelp-buddy Savanna herself, who had done all the preparation & leg work, but working with vendors of each of these nations who are vetted by the Cruise Line. Our days in Estonia, in Russia and in Finland were trip itineraries laid out by Savanna. AMENITIES What is nice about the Royal Caribbean cruise set-up is that once on board, everything is set-up for you, from your cabins, your meals, and some of the nice touches. I had already signed up for a WiFi plan beforehand which gave me some sweet deals and "Key"-access to events that others did not get. I also was a regular of the coffee stand on the 4th deck every single dam day! TAKEAWAYS Before entering each country, we availed ourselves of the currency exchanges at each port so when in the heart of each city or town, we had the option of using their cash to pay for souvenirs and/or pay in restaurants. It actually was trick at times, though, to figure out whether to pay in cash or use one's own credit card (which figures out the exchange itself) would be a better deal. [I realized that using my cc in Estonia and Russia was better.] THE LOWDOWN A great way to cruise and see the rest of the world!

A great way to sample a large area and several countries…read more I was on this ship 18 months ago at Christmas in the Caribbean and booked this cruise. Two weeks in the Baltics. A fabulous trip for $2000 - consider it your hotel, most meals and transportation to each country. I flew in a day early to enjoy Stockholm more. The Arlanda Express is $35 from airport to main train station. From the station area to cruise terminal on the opposite side of town I recommend a taxi or Uber- metro and bus lines aren't close enough. Their port was easy to get into. The Gamla Stan is a fabulous area to stroll thru. This is a city that stays up very late in the summer. Tallin, Estonia- the ship offers a $12 RT shuttle to the mid evil city. Easy to spend an entire day here, so wear comfy shoes. St Petersburg is a fabulous place !! Here I booked a private driver and guide from the ship to escort us for 3 days. Truly the way to go. They pick you up at the ship, drive you everywhere, let you take pictures while they get the tickets, and even sneak you in line and early tours. There's was too much to see in 3 days, so pick the highlights. They also take care of the visa you need. This dock is not convenient to anything in the city. And the first day the passport check takes quite awhile. Helsinki, Finland - another small fee shuttle to the city center. A walkable area to explore. Riga, Latvia was missed due to strong winds, the large ship couldn't navigate the River without possible damage. It happens. So we had a day at sea to catch up. Klaipeda, Lithuania- easy walk off ship thru the old fort and into the city center to explore. Check out the area east of the river, a huge sculpture garden is on that side. Warnmünde, Germany- was a great surprise. Again docking in the city center. And it's a beach resort town. A short 15 minute stroll to the Baltic Sea with soft soft fine sand and COLD water. Rent a "basket" to sit out of the sand and lock your stuff up in. Search out the local food here, hearty and delicious. Be very hungry. Fredricia, Denmark- docked a block from the city center. Bike rentals were a few steps from the ship, a cool way to see the town. You can also hike the ramparts of the fort walls. Copenhagen, Denmark- you will need a ride into the city, this pier is too far out, but very clean. I used the Hop On Hop Off for $35 to tour the city highlights, jumping off to see the Palace, changing of the guards, King's Gardens, and other historical spots. The disappointments on the ship- many new Up charges for room service and lobster at dinner. The Specialty restaurants are now $35 extra. Fostor took fabulous care of the room. Reggie and Maria were ok at dinner service, I have had way better service and food in the past. I only saw three shows which were all ok, nothing wow. Still a great way to sample Europe.

The tour I was on was basically in English, the American type of English, which the tour guide spoke so perfectly one wouldn't even know she wasn't a native of America with the possible exception of the fact that her spoken English was in fact better than that of most Americans. The boat was low immaculate clean and comfortable glass covered boat with heat which heat was invaluable as it was off season and rather cold. The tour took about 2 hours, and true to the tours name, Under the Bridges, took us under all sorts of bridges. Everything along the way was explained and I was able to see sights and obtain views that would have been impossible by land.

Patrick was clearly very knowledgeable not only about photography, but also about Stockholm and it's history. It seemed like he knew some bit of history or folklore about every alley we passed. A hair longer than two hours in a large figure eight around the city took us out and back and then out and back, under dozens of bridges. All the while, a narrator (through wired earphones) pointing out the history of the city, the significance of the bridges and in the breaks, some classical music. Important sights along the way were also part of the narration. The barge we were on was not at all crowded so we did not have to rub elbows with strangers. There is a small concession stand that thankfully had beer and wine (one type of each). There is also a single restroom that I did not need. The commentary was interesting and informative and the staff was courteous and helpful. The bus route and boat route have some stops close together, so it's easy to ride one to a location, and then ride another as you go to your next attraction. There are other red-colored buses and boats in the city, so make sure to get the right one.

My advice, unequivocally, is DO IT! About 80% is actually history of the city, and it's provided in an interesting and charismatic way. It's full of human interest and it takes place in Stockholm's old town or Gamlaston. The price is super affordable, 200 kronor, and lasts an hour and a half. The guides are amazing and you will have an appreciation for the city afterwards that you would not have had otherwise. Plus once you're done you're within walking distance of dozens of great restaurants. Take the tour and get to know the sordid side of Stockholm.
