For those of you who don't know, Sandmann's has a free city tour (where offered) that lasts about 3 hours. However, if you are then interested in other tours (Alternative, Old Town, etc.) you have to pay for them. Here, this is not the case, the company offers three different tours (City Tour, Old Town, and Gamla Stan (I think)). All of them work on a free (tips only) basis. I spent literally a whole day going on all three tours they offer... and there is enough time to grab a quick bite in between and head to the next one. The guides I experienced the city with were Ellen and Ben; both of them were awesome! They were informative, high energy, and friendly. Tours were a good combination of seeing lots of stuff, as well as hearing detailed, but not boringly so, explanation of what we are looking at, the story behind it, and how it related to the city. Tour length of about 90 minutes was actually quite nice, especially when you consider that you can take all three of their tours for free. As for start locations, they are both easy to get to by the T-Bana. The brochure details where the first and third tour meets, but more detail of the second tour would be nice. Guides are holding signs, but no the much more visible umbrellas.

One is the captain and another one is a tour-guide. Good sense of humor, so you will have a really good mood during the tour. We never would have even thought of this so we are very happy she found it. The boat is quite small and looks like nothing on the outside. But, once we boarded the small vessel we found a tiny dining room crowded with white tablecloth tables set for an elegant evening. It is tight in there, but so worth it. Large glass windows so everyone has a good view throughout even if you stay at your table. Everyone begins with drinks as we leave dock, with some people staying at their dining table and others venturing out on the small deck for a drink. After that the pre-ordered meal begins. Our meal had been ordered weeks before online, and what was there that night was not the same. It was still divided between a fish meal, a meat meal or a vegetarian meal. Oh well, although it was not what we expected, it was all wonderful. I am guessing the menu changes regularly. I had fish, beginning with a starter of pickled herring with new potatoes. My wife had a vegetarian starter, but it was covered with caviar, so much for all vegie. Still, she liked it, as did I. My second course was a fish dish in a light dill sauce covered with tiny shrimp. It was outstanding. I forget what desert was but I believe I liked it. In between the main and dessert, the boat was docked at the other end of the lake with a wonderful evening view of the Drottningholm palace, and many dinner guests grabbed another drink or glass of wine and just sat on the deck admiring the scenery. Except for the initial menu confusion, pretty much a perfect evening. Meal is paid in advance, but drinks are in addition at the time. Our boat was the M/S Prins Carl Philip.

Being from Minnesota, the area actually really really reminded us of our own national treasure, the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area. The landscape looks very similar and I'd guess (though I haven't looked at a map) that the two areas are similar latitude wise so that probably makes sense. The thing that was most surprising to us is that here at home, we have to drive six hours north almost into Canada to reach our favorite wilderness area, and here in Stockholm, you can be out on the water and enjoying nature in under half an hour from downtown (which is really urban and you can't even see the water). It's a really interesting mix of things and all in such a small geographic area. OK so if you choose this boat tour, as others have said, it's about 2.5 hours and basically takes you out and makes a loop. The boat is a nice boat ... large, with both indoor and outdoor seating,. So really you should be more than comfortable on your journey, though I can imagine that in the summertime and the height of tourist season, these boats are probably pretty packed. We were there in March, so the boat was less than half full, which was great. If you plan to sit upstairs outside to get the best possible view, bundle up. Even if it's warm out, it will be cold up there. The views are magnificent and the crew was super cool about letting you roam around the boat as you wished to take photos. The tour is also narrated, and our most impressive tour guide did the tour narration in English, German and Dutch after surveying the people on the boat to find out what languages they speak. I have no idea how many languages this gentleman speaks but he literally repeated everything in three different languages and fielded questions. Very impressive. The boat takes you by a lot of cool stuff, particularly the waterside amusemement park that sits on the banks of the water. But other than that, quite a value for the money and a really really wonderful way to see Stockholm!

A hair longer than two hours in a large figure eight around the city took us out and back and then out and back, under dozens of bridges. All the while, a narrator (through wired earphones) pointing out the history of the city, the significance of the bridges and in the breaks, some classical music. Important sights along the way were also part of the narration. The barge we were on was not at all crowded so we did not have to rub elbows with strangers. There is a small concession stand that thankfully had beer and wine (one type of each). There is also a single restroom that I did not need. However, on the next stop, I noticed our guide was holding up a few pictures to provide context to the tour and the pictures were kept in a "Free Tour Stockholm" folder. By this point, I realized I hit the jackpot. Turns out, the tour only started 10 to 15 minutes before I joined at lasted for at least an hour if not longer. Our guide, Lee, was awesome. He gave us an excellent overview of the city and made recommendations on which spots were worth taking a closer look later on. We even took a group photo. They offer tours of the city and old town (schedule on their website), so I hope to be able to check out the first few minutes I missed of old town and experience the city tour later this week.

This was one of the best tours I have ever been on (free, paid, or otherwise). I highly recommend it to anyone new to Stockholm or even for residents to possibly learn new things about the city. I would send any family or friends on this tour. The tour was so great that the next day I decided to take their Söder Tour. Ellen was very enthusiastic and kept the crowd engaged despite the poor weather. I love the concept as most tours cost a hefty sum. If you like the tour you can tip your guide whatever you feel compensates them, but if you dislike it you can walk away at any point or not tip. If your guides are anything like the two I had, you'll be happy to tip. I found both guides much more willing and able to give advice about places to see than any paid guide. Try it, you can't lose!

We took Stockholm Adventures' Archipelago Sailing Tour a week or so ago when we were visiting…read moreStockholm. I really wanted to spend a day out in the Archipelago to experience more than just what Stockholm's beautiful touristed areas have to offer. The Stockholm Archipelago is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea. The Stockholm Archipelago has been found to have slightly over 24,000 islands, islets, and skerries and covers approximately 1,700 km² (of which approximately 530 km² is land). As far as I was concerned, we just had to spend a day exploring it while we were in Sweden. I found Stockholm Adventures after another tour company cancelled our tour a couple of days before the tour we had booked with them. Stockholm Adventures made it easy to book another tour, so we didn't have to miss the Archipelago or rework our itinerary for the trip! The sailing tour was 8 hours long, and our guides provided a wonderful Smörgåsbord lunch and Fika in the afternoon. Our guide gave us a bit of a sailing lesson (he left this up to us, whether we wanted to learn about sailing or whether we just wanted to enjoy the day), which was great (might have piqued my interest to learn more about sailing now that I'm home). Our guides were very friendly and informative; we learned so much about the way that locals view life in Stockholm, the Archipelago, and Sweden. We also were able to visit an island that serves as our guide's boat club's Archipelago home, since it wasn't a weekend. Our tour ended up just being the two of us, so the tour felt very personalized to our interests. The information on the website and that we received by email before the tour was very helpful and informative (so we knew what to bring and where to meet once we arrived in Vaxholm). The day was a pleasure from start to finish, and I'm so glad we found this tour. It really added to our trip to Sweden. I wouldn't hesitate to use the company again if we are able to return to Sweden.

I am assuming this is for CitySightseeing Hop on Hop off bus and boat tours…read more We were on a cruise stop and only had 5 hours to see as much of Stockholm as we could and approached it as a scouting mission for a follow up for when we can spend more time enjoying this beautiful city. 1. The bus route covered all immediate neighborhoods and sites 2. We easily transferred to the boat tour and then back tot he bus 3. Important note; If you are returning to ur cruise ship do not wait until the last minute. Everybody is going to have the same idea and the buses fill up very quickly. Give yourselves enough time so ur not panicking that the ship is leaving without you.

The hop-on hop-off boat and bus were both excellent and very useful during our stay in Stockholm…read more Both the bus and the boat had stops close to our cruise ship dock, so no other transportation was needed. The stops were easy to find and convenient to where we wanted to go, the map was pretty decent for a tour-bus map, and the commentary (headphones provided) was informative and interesting. Red Sightseeing also offers a canal and river tour, which was nice, quiet, and got us to some rarely seen areas of the city with very interesting architecture and lovely green space. The staff was helpful, courteous, and understanding when we made a scheduling/location error. All in all, this was an excellent, pleasant, and very affordable way to see much of Stockholm, to understand how important the waterways are to the city, and to get where we wanted to go. Do note that there are a few different red-colored hop-on hop-off buses and boats, so make sure you get the correct line.

You're provided with a map and a headphone. Easy enough! Where you get off from the bus, there's another ticket counter to purchase your ticket where you get on the boat, and we could have done all that, where we can also use the toilet (not in the same building), but it was around the corner, half a block from getting off the bus. We got off the boat after our tour, so we went back to where we got off from the bus, and the guy who sold us the ticket (saw us standing there!) and told us it's another half a block THAT WAY! So we missed the 1st Red bus! Yes, it had the Red Flag mark! Otherwise, we had fun with this boat tour!

Every year at my father's birthday we'll have dinner at Norrskär. There is an excellent restaurant on the ship, serving traditional Swedish food with a high class touch. The restaurant interior, as well as the rest of the ship, is beautiful and well preserved in it's original wooden style - more than a hundred years old. The restaurant is almost always fully booked, and you can chose between two sittings when booking. We always prefer the late sitting - which gives room to viewing Stockholm from the deck with a cold beer before dinner. If the weather is fine, this can be a sunny trip to paradise. If it's not that good weather, there's plenty of rustic and cozy seating inside. The food is excellent and solid but not extravagant in any way. I usually start with the löjromstoast (whitefish roe toast) which is a little piece of heaven. Every summer there's a new pick of fish and meat dishes for header. This year I went for a classical Biff Rydberg, which filled my belly and made me very satisfied. And there's something about steam boat crews. The waiters are always very knowledgeable, and seems to be happy and genuinely like their jobs. And when you get to travel out into the archipelago every day on an antique steam boat, why shouldn't you be? If you're really lucky, you might get to see the captain with crew take a dive from the roof during one of the longer stops.
