The pickings at Fine Fare, which like this store, is located down the block from me, are slim and limited. There is the Pathmark, but sometimes you don't feel like traveling that far away from home for some fruit. With that said, I tend to scoff at most supermarket produce anyways because they always have some sad looking fruit and veggies. Now I want to say that I don't come here as often as my mother does, but in those few times that I have been in here, I have loved it. It's a small store and it's pretty narrow as well. When it is busy, I can only imagine the craziness that ensues. But everytime I've been in there, it seems well stocked. The fruits are pretty and the veggies aren't sad looking. They also have a deli counter. This place caters to the Russian population (they have slowly moved into Coney Island in the past decade.) So you will also find a lot of Russian products in here as well. I find the products to be high quality and relatively cheap. I love just coming in and grabbing just some blueberries and strawberries. They are a small family business - which is always a plus in my book. This is a great establishment for the residents of Coney Island who don't wan to schelp far for their fruit and veggies.

Any cut of beef you could want. Ground beef as well. And if you don't see your cut of meat, just ask the very helpful people behind the meat counter. They will cut it for you! And if you are in need of a recommendation, they will offer it to you, from grilling to pan cooking. They also have chicken, as well as hard to find items like chicken hearts, liver, and brain. Yes I said brain, as in sheep brain. On the other side of a quite impressive spice section they have bass filets, tilapia, and a whole host of fish. Every time I have gotten fish here it is fresh and delicious. They also have a nice selection of frozen foods as well as dairy, and standard grocery items. This place is a delight every single time. Tiny vegetable and fruit section. Pale, and unappetizing. So much room devoted to chips (however healthy they may be, that's not food), vitamins (not food too) and dried fruits and nuts (who stocks this place, a squirrel?). On the other hand, they have also pleasantly surprised me a few times. They do carry seasonings I haven't seen anywhere else, like actual non-irradiated vanilla beans, and their bread and cereal/grain macaroni/pasta section is pretty large, which probably reflects the clientele of Staten Island. And do try the frozen fruit yogurt strawberry bars that they have in there. The healthiest and best that I've ever tasted. Oh, and the herbal tea selection is good. It goes without saying that it's more expensive than in Manhattan, but then again when you're buying organic, you have to be prepared to pay a bit more. The question is, how much more?

Fourty nine cents a pound for a third of Mazals offerings? Unheard of in most every neighborhood regardless of ethnicity. As I was in route to meet a my girlfriend, I only could explore for a few moments. So with an open handed upward thrust, I bagged two handfuls if pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and peanuts. Once I was rung up my bill was $5.25. Open 24 hours!

There was a famous Golden Key candy store in Odessa. Little Odessa has one too. Russian candy is the best in the world - and this from a person who'll take sushi, dim sum or biriyani over a borsch any day. I didn't even know the travesty called milk chocolate existed until I moved to the States. Here, you will find some milk chocolate, more as a consession to Americans and Americanized Russian kids shopping here - but the majority of candy sold in the store is honest-to-goodness, real Russian chocolate. It sells other stuff - sausage, cheese, whatever... but really, who can bother with those things with all that CANDY! It lines the walls, it sits in bins, it's piled everywhere. Forget Willy Wonka, he didn't know what he was doing. If you want to know what real candy is supposed to taste like, this is the place for you!
