Last year I was itching for a change...decided I was getting a tapered haircut and dyeing my hair purple (not quite a midlife crisis). I searched online for a stylist familiar with Black girl 4c hair and came across Donnie Hammond. It was super easy making an appointment for the next weekend online. I had a lovely experience here. The vibe was nice, clean (someone was intermittently sweeping up hair and was doing a great job) fun atmosphere, great music. I had a wait a few minutes but not too long before I got into the styling chair. Donnie was super patient with me, we discussed pictures (and reality), colour tones...the color was perfect in the end...the haircut took some getting used to but I got a ton of compliments (maybe they were just being polite). Also, some hair stylists are chatty cathy's but sometimes you just want to sit and listen to your audiobooks in peace under the dryer...I loved that no one forced conversation with me. Easy and relaxing. One chair over another lady getting an amazing blowout was chatting away with her stylist..we're all getting what we want! ---+ A few weeks ago I decided I'd go back for another dramatic cut with a trendy side part. Donnie hooked me up again after we went through numerous pictures for inspiration. (Also it was nice to see that the place wasn't full, everyone was masked, I had my temperature taken, there were plastic sheets with their logo set up between washing stations and I waited outside until they were free easy to seat me, as covid precautions). I knew that I would need a blow dry and styling for a Saturday wedding between my regular haircuts. I usually see Alexis, but she wasn't going to be there that day. She introduced me to Molly and said I would be in good hands, so I scheduled the appointment. Molly was wonderful. I usually wear my hair straight but thought I wanted loose waves for the wedding and had shared photos. After the first few passes, I didn't feel comfortable with waves, and Molly took them out. I ended up with a perfect smooth bob with just the right amount of fullness, bend and swing. It poured rain that night, and although the hem of my dress got wet, my hair was perfect all night (and the next day)! Molly is awesome--friendly, attentive, with great attention to detail. I love coming to Tim! He's fantastic. That being said, I'm giving Odyssey this rating because their pricing is based on gender, not hair length. I had a negative experience when I questioned this and pointed out that this isn't great for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Everyone I've met here strikes me as kind and well-intentioned, but it's clear that despite employing queer people they are still a very heteronormative salon. More details on this experience further below. If this factor doesn't impact or bother you then I'd recommend the salon. After moving past the disappointing experience I had with them, I continued to come back. I'm a creature of habit and really trust Tim to consistently give me a good cut. The salon was recently renovated. It's clean, well lit, simple, and I always love the music they play. They provide coat check and free water. I've always had a pretty easy time getting squeezed in within a few days of calling. I came to Odyssey for the first time when I was looking to get a drastic change. My hair hadn't been cut in nearly two years. It hung all the way down to my butt, and I wanted a disconnected undercut. I came to Odyssey specifically for Tim, and only found the salon because of his hashtags on IG. He does a great job cutting and styling curly hair, and I have loose beach waves. I adored the haircut he gave me, and was looking forward to coming back. The second time I booked an appointment, I asked how much it would cost. The first time I came in I didn't stop to wonder about this. Why would I? I came in and got over a foot of hair cut off, and loved the cut Tim gave me. I didn't care what it cost me. The second time I figured the price would be different. Only a month or two had passed since getting my disconnected undercut. I get the vast majority of my hair buzzed at a 1.5, and needed a minor trim on the length up top. I could tell I was speaking to the woman that I always see at the front desk. She said, "you got a women's haircut last time, so I would assume you'd get the same thing again." When I explained that I have significantly shorter hair now she said she would talk to the owner and get back to me. They did not call me back. So I called them. I spoke to the same woman again. She seemed uncomfortable and unsure of how to respond. I pointed out that it would be unfair to charge me the same amount when my hair is so short. I also mentioned how bad this sort of pricing would be for the queer community. She responded by trying to feminize my haircut. She kept calling it a pixie cut instead of a disconnected undercut in an attempt to justify charging me the price of a women's haircut. I can assure you, I don't have a pixie cut. My buzz goes all the way up to the crown of my head on all sides, and the length up top falls around the top of my ears. Then she said "it will take time to cut your hair too," as if I was trying to imply that my haircut would be significantly faster and that's why I should pay less. When I asked why their services were even based on gender instead of hair length she said, "our prices aren't based on gender. They're based on the assumption that men will come in about once a month and will need a clipper cut, and women will come in less frequently" I sat in silence for a second. She had told me the prices weren't based on gender, and then in the same breath explained the reason for the pricing by using gender. I was coming in so soon after my first cut. I knew I'd be coming back often to maintain such a short cut. She was making zero sense. Ultimately she told me I could discuss the price of my cut with my stylist. I got off the phone wondering what the salon did when a man with long locks came in. I tried contacting Tim through his IG profile the night before to talk to him about it, but he didn't respond despite seeing it. Later when I saw him he stiffly told me that IG profile is personal and I should have contacted the salon with any questions. If you were to look at his posts and consider how I even came to find him in the first place, you'd understand why this wasn't obvious. I thought it unprofessional that he just left me hanging instead of conveying that through messenger when I contacted him, but I accepted it. He didn't touch on the topic further at all. That probably felt like the most awkward cut I got with him. For that cut I was charged less, but upon checking my credit card statements I can see that I was eventually being charged what I paid for my first cut on subsequent visits. I'm not sure if there's a real reason why - I have no idea whether Tim progressed as a stylist and cost more as a result. I valued the consistently good trims enough to drop it. I can see that I ultimately visited them nearly once a month over the span of an entire year, save one or two times. The majority of my haircut was done with clippers. According to their idiotic reasoning, I guess they might as well call me a man. read more

First of all, everyone here is just delightful. Like you walk in to smiles and kindness and the most comfortable environment. I had my first haircut with Tim and I will DEFINITELY be returning. I have curly hair and my hairdresser of the past decade just stopped cutting hair so I was very nervous about a new stylist. Another curly girl recommended Tim and I am so glad she did. He was everything. He listened to me about my hair and really cared about my hair. He talked just the right amount (as an introvert this can be very anxiety provoking). My hair was much curlier when I entered the salon than when I left for both haircuts. I registered online for a Devacut, and instead the stylist cut my wet, unconditioned, hair. I would definitely not want to get a haircut here right before going somewhere, and my hair currently feels like sticky straw from the products used. I was in town for a convention and couldn't bring my whole hair regime with me. I didn't want to walk too far from my hotel and Odyssey was just a few blocks away. They also had an online reservation system, which I'm always a fan of. I didn't really know who to request so I think they ended up choosing the artist for me. I have really thick, wavy, curly and coarse hair so I'm always nervous about seeing a new person. James was perfect! When I arrived the receptionist was so friendly and helpful, took my coat and led me over to get my hair washed. Everyone there is a great conversationalist about most things -- turns out folks who were helping me were also into board games. So refreshing! You get a nice scalp massage during the hair washing process, which is really calming and relaxing. Once you get into the artist's chair it's the pretty standard salon configuration. They use great products here that kept my hair straight for at least two days, and the price for a wash and blowdry was reasonable for the experience. I've always been told (and agree) that if someone knows how to probably do a blow out, then you can trust them with your hair. She also didn't pour tons of product on my hair like others have. Being new to Philly, I felt lucky that I had found a good hair salon on my first visit to a place somewhat close to our place. That was the case until the person who did my hair was no longer there suddenly (just before my next visit). So after 4.5 months, I had been left going back to the drawing board. Upon reading the reviews of many places here on Yelp, I saw Odyssey and was reminded again of it since I often walk by. I reached out, and the rest is history. I have found my place and a great stylist - who in this case is the owner, so I don't anticipate being in the same position that I was in with my previous person going MIA. Alexis is a gem - personable, a great listener, and super talented. In a way, I'm thankful my previous new salon didn't work out - simply because I ended up with a much better place. Everyone that I encountered there was great actually (despite being quite busy with a wedding party). Coming from Boston, I think prices are more than fair for the services - and given that I work in customer experience and have had an awesome customer experience, even if the prices were higher I would be quite happy. Everyone from the receptionist to the stylist were very friendly and courteous, and it was clear that they want your business and to make sure that your experience was great. Large open space with the studio and comfortable chairs. Would like if there were more chairs in the waiting area, because there are only 2 and some people were standing. I really wanted to like and keep coming back to this place because Alexis did a good job the first (only) two times I went to her. But she cancelled on me the last two times I scheduled with her. One time I can understand, but twice is a lot and frankly unprofessional. What really made it worse this time was how rude and unapologetic they were after cancelling on me. I am a long-time client at Odyssey Hair Studio. I had an appointment on Tuesday, January 4th, and I was dismayed to see that some clients and staff were not wearing masks. Although my stylist and I were masked, others were walking around, talking, and even singing without masks. As I understand it, the City of Philadelphia has a mask mandate unless your business requires all employees and patrons to be vaccinated. I do not feel safe booking another appointment at this time, and I fear for other clients and staff as the number of COVID cases in Philadelphia continues to rise. I had reached the point where I was throwing my hair up into a messy bun because it had grown long and boring- it was time for a haircut. Thanks to Yelp reviews, I found Odyssey. I gave the stylist the vague request of not really having a preferred length, but I have pretty fine hair that looks flat without layers and don't really blow-dry or use product on a daily basis. The stylist shampooed me herself, and managed to deliver a haircut that, while it doesn't scream "wow," achieved exactly what I needed- volume and easy maintenance, with a cute framing of my face. I went in here for the first time in February and met with one of their amazing stylist (she no longer works here) I was okay paying for their services (even though very pricey) Come my three month routine touch up I contact my stylist again and book an appointment. Fast forward two days before my appointment and I call to cancel due to an inconvenience, the receptionist proceeds to cancel my appointment with a stylist i had never heard of, apparently my original stylist didn't work there anymore and odyssey proceeded to schedule me with another stylist who I didn't know and never had worked with without ever informing me. This was very unprofessional on their part. If I hadn't called to cancel I would've shown up the day of my appointment and been met with this very unpleasant surprise. I went to Odyssey for the first time to get highlights for the first time. I've had bad haircuts in the past and was very nervous to have someone new handling my thick curly hair. However I was in very good hands with Donnie. She knew exactly how to cut it so it wouldn't be puffy or heavy and took off the perfect amount.
