We've had wonderful experiences with Odyssey Preschool in Foster City. Our oldest child started attending when she was 20 months old and is now 5 years old. From Ms. Lihua's classroom to Ms. Jing's, and now Ms. Ping's, our child has been thriving during her time there. All the teachers (and assistants) have been great; they pay attention to our child's strengths, weaknesses, personality and behavior tendencies and adjust their teaching accordingly as opposed to applying one standard approach to all the kids in the class. When we had our second child, we were eager to send her to Ms Lihua's class right when she turned 18 months. The personalities of our two children are quite different; but Ms Lihua's caring and loving style really shines through to get the little ones acclimated quickly to a new school setting, regardless of their differing personalities. We're excited to see our second child go through the other classes in the future as well. It's great that Odyssey is continuously able to retain their amazing teachers for so many years. read more

This is a really lovely place where my toddler learned how to use the potty, many Chinese words, music, and lots of art & play all under the Montessori framework which fosters independence & seeing each child. The class size was smaller due to COVID. My child was with an amazing nanny from 4 months to 3. I was apprehensive across the board but teachers made the transition so easy. We were lucky enough to transfer to their RWC location, which is more practical for where we live. However, I will always have fond memories of where he first started his education. read more

There is no child who is dangerous; there is only unprofessional and irresponsible teachers putting children in dangerous activities and then kick them out after 4 days with the excuse it is the child's fault. Update after 2 months: My child have been doing great in other preschool for last 2 months without being labeled, kicked out by any teacher. As a conclusion to my review, it is the problem of unprofessional and irresponsible Odysey preschool teachers who would label a 2 years olchild as dangerous and then kicked her out of school after 4 days. Our son attended Ms Jing Kwok's class and now he is in kindergartern. It was such a great experience that we didn't even hesitate to send our daughter to her class again. We did a lot of search for bilingual Chinese preschool. We simply ruled out all others because of Ms Jing. She is purely amazing. The first day you dropped off your child at school, she could calm the child down in less than 3 minutes like she got magic. She is extremely experienced and patient. She teaches kids with crafts, drawing, jobs and mostly important, the confidence that she instilled in the students. We felt so lucky that we put both our kids here. We also recommended Ms Jing's class to 4 friends. Now they are all in Odyssey and become regular playdates. read more

My son has been going to Odyssey for the last 5 months and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I can see a big leap in his growth in many aspects. His language was very bare bones and he hardly put two words together. But after only 2 months at Odyssey, he started talking in phrases. He hardly used a pencil before but now he can trace all the alphabet and numbers perfectly. I'm very proud of how he is learning something new all the time. He had a bit of a difficulty adjusting to having so many kids around and how to coexist with them. But the teachers, especially Ms.Shree has been amazing with him and worked with him consistently. She kept in touch with me regularly and we both shared notes about his day and his interests which really was the glue in helping him become more comfortable. He is now enjoying his time at the school with all his friends. I think it is very rare for a teacher to patiently help a kid for over 2+ months on a single thing and ensure the kid gets all the support he needs. We feel blessed! Parents are invited for some festive occasions to the school and I have seen that all the teachers Ms.Shree, Ms.Kelly, Ms.Nina and Ms.Velar have been very patient, gentle and amazing with all the kids! My son started Odyssey preschool when he was 2.5 years old and he has been with Odyssey for 2 years now. Being a pandemic baby, he never liked social interactions much. But in last 2 years, I have seen him grow from a socially anxious, shy child to a confident individual who never shields away from expressing his opinion. The teachers are very nurturing and always ready to work with parents on the improvement areas. I personally learned a lot about child development from the teachers specially on not to push a child when he is not ready. Because of this, we never struggled with any of his transitions- maybe it be the potty training or developing executive functions. He loves his school. We visited many other preschools in San Mateo area before enrolling our children, Odyssey Preschool has more smiling children and teachers than any other school ! My children have grown to love their teachers and friends very quickly! I think the yard, Montessori facilities and equipment are wonderful. What a surprise my son was out of diapers in 2 weeks. Really bad communication between teachers themselves and between teacher and parents. 4 different teachers left in 1 1/2 years for the same class. Teachers seems nice but management is a problem. They been changing pick up schedules and other rules with very short email notice and different teachers tell me different things (poor communication between teacher and management, poor staff training) Restroom is always wet and dirty, sinks are always clogged. Teaching material piled up and disorganized. Children's cubby is never organized. I have also seem lunch bags are opened on the floor during snack time and no one seems care. This is our son's second year attending Odyssey Preschool. He started when he just turned two years old. We only speak Mandarin at home with our son, so initially we just wanted to find a bilingual school where teachers could speak Mandarin with our son to make him feel more comfortable and to ease him into preschool since he's never had any prior experience with any daycares or caregivers other than his parents. We were so lucky to have met Ms. Jing from Class 5. She was always caring and patient, and soon became our son's favorite teacher. Our boy came home singing new songs, telling us new things Ms. Jing has taught him. He's also brought home many creative crafts and artwork. He seemed to be having such a great time at school which is all that mattered. He also learned more discipline such as waiting his turn, sharing, and doing more things on his own. Even after my son has moved onto the next class, he's still excited to go back to Class 5 to visit Ms. Jing. Nothing makes me happier than seeing our boy having such a strong bond and trusting relationship with his teacher. read more

Both my daughters attended Odyssey, and the school has been great on all fronts. The teachers are great with kids, very patient, but also firm when needed. My kids always talk about what they learned, and they both like all the teachers there. They have two fairly large playgrounds -- both covered with artificial grass -- one for the older kids and one for the younger. Its much better than most other schools we considered. After Covid happened, we were hesitant at first about sending them back. However, the guidelines that Odyssey came up with is very solid. Won't go into details but its been 4 months and no one has gotten Covid. I think the results speak for itself. We have been with Odyssey for 4 years now for our 2 sons, starting with toddler care all the way to preschool. In pre-Covid times, our sons received amazing care and Montessori instruction from all their teachers. Ms. Maria, in particular, has provided a high level of intellectual and creative instruction that sets a solid foundation for Kindergarten. Now, during Covid, Odyssey has done everything possible to ensure a safe, clean environment, while still ensuring a high level of care and nurturing. We've been going to Odyssey for a total of 5, going on 6 years. My daughter started at age 1 in class 5 then went through class 3 (the mandarin one) for both years. They had a brief pause during Covid where they did some online class, but she was so excited to go back and see her friends. My son is currently finishing up his last year in Class 3. While they were both nervous when initially starting (and my son more so when he started Class 3) the teachers were really patient and helped them to get acclimated quickly. It's great seeing them excited to talk about their new friends from school and seeing/performing the new songs and poems that they've learned. I can tell they love the teachers as they'll want to go back and say hi to Miss Jing in Class 5 and my son is always super excited to show off his new water bottle, toy, or clothes to Ms. Ping and Ms. Emma. read more

Both our sons have attended odyssey preschool, one graduated last year and one still there. We've had a great experience with both and very glad we chose odyssey. Ours are in the mandarin class as the language element is very important to us. The teachers are very thoughtful and encouraging, and our sons have really enjoyed their time there. Our four year old daughter goes to this school and she loves it. She is learning so much. I am amazed at the topics the school covers, from life skills (like hanging up clothes), to math, to world geography. Each week the teachers email us the lesson plans. It helps facilitate conversations at home to reinforce the school concepts. The school is fairly young and have implemented some great changes already. They got rid of the grass play areas and replaced it with soft turf. This is eco-friendly and provides a level surface for the kids. They have also added more bathrooms and added shorter potties and sinks so it's easier for the kids to reach. I like that school lunches are provided. It offers kids a variety of foods. In our search for daycares and schools we found this hard to come by. We are looking forward to enrolling our son here when he is old enough. read more

Both my son and daughter go to Odyssey. My son is in class 5 and my daughter is in class 3 (Mandarin class). They always have a lot activities there and they love the teachers there. They are not forced to take a nap or stay on their bed through the whole nap time. I appreciate that the teachers respect the kids' willingness and pay attention to how they feel. This is my 4yr. old's 2nd year at Odyssey and 1st year for my 2yr. old. For my 2yr. old, it was big change from his previous daycare with new faces and unfamiliar classrooms, but the staff at Odyssey made the transition go very smoothly. To put my 2yr. old at ease, they placed him in the same class as his brother (Ms Ersie and Ms Lispa). This worked out great and the teachers just adore him! We are always well-informed which gives me and my husband a peace of mind. The school also has 3rd party extra-curricular activities such soccer, art and music incorporated during school hours. its high-time i wrote about the lovelier aspects of Odyssey. There could be minor operational issues like bathroom leaks! see the traffic that uses the bathrooms. Kids being kids, they do throw toilet papers & brown papers in the sinks to clog. this is just a small part where, the Management is so proactive in fixing these issues. I cannot say enough good things about this school! They are clean, the teachers are fantastic, the school is transparent so you know what the kids are working on everyday, and most importantly my daughter LOVES it. Previous to coming to Odyssey, my daughter spent one month at Empire Preschool just a few blocks away. She had such a bad experience there that we were all on edge about finding the right school for her. We took Sofie to Odyssey to meet her teacher before enrolling her full time, and right away I knew this was the right place for her. Because my daughter is painfully shy, she is slow to warm up to people and tends to shut down if she gets scared. Her teacher was so patient and calm with her, I knew she would adjust very quickly. The first day of school, we walked her in, and her teacher introduced her to girls her age in her class right away, and miraculously there were NO tears from Sofie (she cried for the entire month at Empire). She made friends the first week, and her teacher even sent me a video of her playing with her friends. Now I have peace-of-mind while at work because I know she's being taken care of. Our daughter has attended preschool at Odyssey for over two years now, in the Mandarin class. We have been amazed at how much our daughter has learned over these two years including language comprehension, early math skills, and independent life skills. When we expressed concern about how some life changes were impacting her emotionally, her teachers quickly had a meeting to discuss and then had a call with us to help give us more insight into how she was doing while at school. It made us feel very supported as parents and that they truly care about her well being. In post-COVID times, they have taken health and safety precautions very seriously and have implemented many new policies. Sending our little girls to preschool during Covid was a very tough decision. However we knew how hard it was for us both working from home without childcare and how much our 2 and 4 year olds missed their routine, playtime, friends, teachers and school instruction. The staff at Odyssey Montessori never ceases to amaze us. They are loving, kind, thoughtful, and so supportive. They have significantly increased their cleaning procedures, take the kiddos' temperatures before entrance everyday, and all staff must wear their masks at all times. They have decreased their hours of operation but still offer 8:30 am-4:30 pm care which worked for us. They have also reduced their class enrollment sizes due to Covid, so it creates a more safe and intimate environment for the kiddos and teachers. Everyday our girls come home happy and fulfilled. We as the parents are doing our part too, to be safe. I can't say enough great things about this school and their loving staff. Thank you!! read more

We enrolled our child for 2 years both in the toddler and preschool programs. We could write pages and pages about the drama we've encountered with the management, so will leave you with an abridged version for now. Most of our child's major issues occurred at the preschool level. The positives that deserve a star: - A handful (2-3) of teachers are excellent in our observation and genuinely care. - They will take kids who are not potty trained. The negatives :please read, these are SERIOUS problems that are consistent with other reviewers that never seem to get addressed, since management is completely unreceptive to feedback- they implement a change for a few weeks to placate parents, and things usually revert to its original state shortly thereafter - The student/teacher ratio seems really high, perhaps even over the requirements. Especially at lunch time, the teachers have difficulty managing the chaos and safety can be compromised. Incidents such as child escaping facility (we found our child standing in the narrow high-construction zone parking lot on pickup because it was easy for him to get out of the facility) or fights are blamed immediately on the child rather than lack of teacher supervision and building safety. -Many times front desk is left unmanned (many parents noticed this even after my son escaped). They do not have enough support staff to keep the facility safe for the children. - School is extremely disorganized in terms of belongings being misplaced, important medicines like life-saving allergy medication or asthma inhalers getting "lost". On our last day, we discovered half of our son's life saving medication was missing, and it was shrugged off as unimportant with no remorse. Also, we always need to allow ourselves an extra 10-15 minutes on pickup in order to locate child's belongings which are scattered in many different places - Communication with parents is poor; school is inconsistent about describing lesson plans (some weeks an email is sent, some weeks no information), providing ongoing feedback about child behavior in between formal parent/teacher conference. - Feedback usually comes only when a major negative incident happens (e.g. biting, pushing) and the child is suddenly suspended, at which time the owner/director become quite confrontational putting full blame on the child and parents. Short-term suspension is viewed as a way of fixing the behavior (specifically a way to 'give the overworked teachers a break') , and counter productive vs giving warnings and working together on solutions. 2-3 year olds do not understand suspension and look at it as a vacation day. -There is a major disconnect between the teacher's observations of your child and the management. After requesting a discussion with my child's individual teacher, i was given no indication that my child's behavior was drastically different from what should be expected of a 3 year old. However when negative incidents occur, management is quick to label your child as the problem rather than take responsibility for their own shortcomings. I can fully accept that the school may not be the best fit for my child or his personality, but that information must be relayed to parents from all parties early on. - The preschool class has a huge age range 2.5 yr - 6 yr which may be hard for both the youngest and oldest kids in terms of social interaction and behavioral expectations. - "Montessori" style is not suited for all kids. Some find the lack of structure overwhelming and without frequent, honest parent-teacher feedback it's difficult to know if your kid is thriving. -Highly unprofessional management- child confidentiality doesn't exist here- we came to know specifics of other children and parents' issues directly from the owner herself. Every time you make effort to reach out to owner or director, you are greeted with hostility that they do not have time to talk because they are 'breaking ratio'. Management refuses to make time after hours to discuss important and concerning events regarding your child. As another reviewer pointed out, everything seems peachy ( the owner is especially two-faced and has the very same rosy positive comments about each child) until your child has an issue at which point the anger and defensiveness takes over. Upon confrontation, we have been made to feel that our child was barely tolerated here and that they were doing us a 'favor' by retaining him. Upon leaving the school, we have noticed a huge shift in his attitude and happiness- and it took us a while to get to this realization because of the severe lack of feedback and communication. To our knowledge, multiple families we know are leaving this school due to similar issues - do your research, talk to parents who have been there (feel free to PM us for more details), and DO READ the filtered negative reviews because they are all consistent. Love this school!!! My son was attending another preschool before i transfer him here. The other school made a lot of promises that they did not keep, like teaching him another language. Since being here my son can say certain phrases in Chinese and he loves that class. The staff are all great and caring towards the children. Odyssey is a fantastic place. The teachers there are very personal and connected to the children. Nearly every day when I pick them up, one of the teachers will tell me a funny story about what one of my sons did. They have a great sense for children and how to communicate with them. They never talk down to the kids, and always explain something in a reasonable way instead of just saying "don't do that". On the other hand, they don't let the kids run wild; there's a good set of rules in place so that the children know what's allowed and what isn't. Odyssey was the first school our kids went to, and we were worried about how they would handle the long day (8:00 to 6:00) but when we picked them up on the very first day, they were beaming and excited to come back the next day. Often I get them out of bed in the morning by telling them that they have to get dressed so they can go to school, and right away they'll start talking about which teachers and students they'll play with that day. The school started out small and has recently expanded into a wonderful facility with a lot of new things to offer, but it hasn't lost the personal side that we value so much. It's clear that even as they grow, the owners and staff aren't losing their own love for what they do. read more

For the last 7+ years, we have been extremely happy with ours experience at Odyssey Preschool. Our first daughter was in the school for ~4 years and now our second kid has been going for the last 3+ years. The school has excellent, caring teachers. The owners, Sanjay and Prabha, have been open to parent's feedback and act immediately. One of the key positives of the school is the quality of teachers. What can we say about Ms. Angelica, Ms. Ersie and Ms. Lipsa - all of them make learning fun through several different Montessori methods. Thanks to Ms. Ersie, my daughter can read books now and she looks forward to all the jobs. We also like the that they have additional enrichment activities such as drawing and engineering classes. My two sons have been in Odyssey school for more than a year now and I am very happy with the school. Both of the children like to go to the school every morning. They have good friends at school. They also learned a lot (words, math, music and other areas) Also I want to mention that in the past half year, the management of the school improved a lot. We love Odyssey Preschool! Our son Vir had a nanny for 2 year prior to joining Odyssey and we were very nervous about his transition. The teachers at Odyssey really helped us to provide Vir with a smooth transition. They were great about giving us a status update each day -- telling us what went well and where Vir needed some extra help. He learned how to feed himself, nap outside of his crib and now he's in the process of being potty trained. The most amazing part about this school is around how closely they observe the kids and make recommendations regarding their well-being. They noticed that Vir needed to be challenged more (he was in toddler room) 8 months before he was due to move to the preschool. They recommended that he be moved early, but only if we were comfortable with it. They worked with us through that transition and now Vir is just thriving with Miss Lipsa and Miss Ersie. We are so happy to have found this school and the great and caring teachers they have employed there. Prabha the director is very professional and caring. My son goes to Odyssey pre school. I had to leave my 2 years old who was taken care with my parents and myself at home all the time. It was very difficult for me to even think of leaving him at school. I went to several pre schools and I felt very warm and comfortable at Odyssey. For a 2 year old, my main search was not education but the comfortable feeling of being in school. The school made my transition and also took good care of my son. He has made great friends, he likes his teachers and when I leave him at school, he feels safe and I can see that in his eyes. He is learning a lot as well. More than anything, I am happy with the current set-up and it is a very hard decision for me to move him out of the school if we happen to buy a house in a location further away from school. read more

My kids have been at Odyssey Preschool in the Mandarin class for the past 2 years and I have been very pleased with the love and care that they have received here. The teachers are really kind and take a genuine interest in my kids. I have really liked the Montessori Method and the impact on my kid's ability to do things for themselves and learning self-control. When we started there, my daughter was more than ready for preschool and adjusted really well. The adjustment for my son was a little tougher. What I really liked is that as he was having difficulty adjusting, I talked to Prabha and she took it very seriously. She ended up pairing him up with a very special teacher who really was able to work with him individually and ensure he was doing well. As soon as that happened, my son was happy to go to school and did much better. I really liked how they were so willing and able to adjust approaches to my children since they are both very different and had differing needs when it came to teacher interaction. I really appreciated how willing they are to work with us and treat every child as an individual. I also like that even though we are not a Mandarin speaking family, my kids are conversational now in Mandarin and do really well. It is nice to know that they have a solid foundation in a second language at such an early age. The kids also get a lot of playground time and a chance to move around. Overall, my My kids have been very safe and well attended. They have learned a lot over the past 2 years and are very ready to attend Kindergarten in the Fall. My son attended Odyssey for about 1 year when he was 2.5 years old. He started in the toddler program and then moved to the preschool program. The toddler teachers did not seem very engaged with the kids, there were multiple times when I came to pick him up and he was not wearing his sunhat ( a MUST in Foster City when outside exposed to the constant sun) and when I asked a teacher about it was told "It's not my job to watch him" My son went through a few behavioral phases that should have been standard for kids his age, but every time I asked for the circumstances that led up to any incident I was always told they didn't see exactly what happened. One time the owner of the preschool called to tell me that he was suspended because the "teachers needed a break from him." How do you suspend a 2.5 year old and think that is going to do anything other than inconvenience the parents who then have to stay home with their child with no advance notice. The preschool class was a bit better, the teachers seemed more caring, but overall it was all still a bit disorganized and chaotic. The management, also really disorganized. Even tuition was not standard. I found out later everyone seemed to be paying different amounts. I found out from a friend that the management was sharing details of my son's behavior with other parents, which is none of their business! There are definitely better preschools out there. My recommendation is to keep looking. read more

My daughter goes to this school and she loves it!!! She came to the country speaking no English and the school staff and teachers were always comprehensive and helpful with her! Now she speaks a perfect English and I own that to Odyssey teachers and staffs. The school is always improving the facility to better accommodate the kids! Well my fellow yelpers, this is a hard one to do... We have been there since 10/2014 in the mandarin bi-lingual class. The class size is around 30 students and while the 3-4 or sometimes 5 teachers are individually fantastic, I just don't think the students benefit enough from such a large class. It is also very challenging for the teachers. A lot of the times my daughter tells me school is very boring because while the teacher is nice they are having to oversee a lot of kids at the same time, so what is advertised as Montessori philosophy of empowering children to explore and become self directed ends up meaning leaving the kids to just sort of hang out and figure things out without much real connection and encouragement. I don't particularly care for the way the school is run but I firmly believe the owners are good, it's just that they r new and need to continue to figure out ways to improve. The play ground doesn't have a lot of structures for play and there is literally a short sidewalk like place where kids ride bikes. Issue is they can't really ride it... :(. I guess my verdict is this... If there were other Chinese immersion school options nearby I would switch, at the same time I don't think my child's future will be ruined by the school either. read more

My son loves this preschool. He has been going to this preschool since he turned two. Prabha has started this school with core values of creating a nurturing, caring, and happy environment for the children which also serves healthy food. The teachers, Ms Ann and Ms. Jackie, Ms. Becka, Ms. Lipsa and others are very caring, I feel like I am sending my son to a homecare with a loving family. The best Montessori school in Foster City from our experience. They have such experienced staff who are patient, observant and who are knowledgeable. We really wish we had known about them before we have put our daughter in the previous school. Their passion for quality education shows in every aspect of the way they run the school. Our daughter is always happy after coming to this school and always runs and gives her teachers hug whenever she sees them. From the start of the day to the end of the day they observe all the kids so well. When we go to pick up our daughter we get the whole gist of what all activity she did even before we ask. The attention to detail, the smiling and enthusiastic staff gives you an idea of the culture of the school. This school has given our daughter lot of confidence and helped her make so many friends. I can just go on and on about Odyssey Preschool..They have so many activities for the kids, healthy and safe place to play, they teach good eating habits and teach them to respect food, friends and family. They also have great after school program. All in all the best school we can think of! read more

My kid had gone here for more than a year before I gave up. The Owner and the Director painted a great picture of Montessori Method of learning, Individualized Program for each kid, etc. I realized only later that each teacher had a different idea of Montessori concept and seemed like they got a crash course and jumped right on the job. I do not believe this school provides an environment for academic enrichment! During my kid's stint here, there was only one parent-teacher meet in which they shared a feedback, and my kid's progress remained the same even after a year. I was told to talk to the teacher directly. The teacher seemed to be prepared with the answers even before the conversation began. On several occasions, it did not seem like the owner or teachers had any respect for parent's time. The Director has REAL challenges in accepting parent's feedback. Everything is great, until you like the school, and nothing remains the same once you share your feedback. Maybe another parent would have walked out the next month, but I stayed on for three additional months hoping for improvement. "Individualized program" was a JOKE! I was stuck in a maze of owner, director and the teachers. In the beginning, we were excited about the Indian food choices they offered here only to realize later that my kid actually never ate that food. I would encourage every parent to choose this school carefully after matching your expectations. read more

We Love odyssey! You can see that teachers here wanted to teach because they like kids. Spacious and plenty of projects kids can do inside classroom. Ever since we entered the school, school has tons of improvements and willing to spend a lot of money on equipment, renovations for the school. Both my kids attended Odyssey and they enjoyed it so much here. So thankful there's a great place for the kids where they can learn and have fun. read more

My kid is in the Mandarin Bilingual class and I like their small class size so that every child could get enough attention from the teachers. I also like the fact that the teachers care about the kids. They communicate with us on a regular basis, and whenever I have concerns, they take them seriously and try their best to solve the problem. We are so lucky to have found Odyssey Preschool for our two boys!! There are so many good things to say about this school. My older son started at Odyssey last year and loved it from day one. He loves this school like a second home. His social and academic development has exceeded our expectations and all credit goes to the amazing staff at Odyssey. The teachers truly care about a child's overall development and well-being and they make this school a special place for the children. The Montessori way of learning is a great start for any child and Odyssey provides that. Most importantly, all of the teachers welcome parent feedback, take it the right way and follow through. My younger son started this summer and is showing great progress in the short time he has been there. As another mom has said, we love the fact that Odyssey offers the BEST lunch menu compared to any other preschool in the area. And not just that, the school is appropriately staffed at lunch time to ensure that all children eat their lunch properly and are well attended to.
