From Ms. Lihua's classroom to Ms. Jing's, and now Ms. Ping's, our child has been thriving during her time there. All the teachers (and assistants) have been great; they pay attention to our child's strengths, weaknesses, personality and behavior tendencies and adjust their teaching accordingly as opposed to applying one standard approach to all the kids in the class. When we had our second child, we were eager to send her to Ms Lihua's class right when she turned 18 months. The personalities of our two children are quite different; but Ms Lihua's caring and loving style really shines through to get the little ones acclimated quickly to a new school setting, regardless of their differing personalities. We're excited to see our second child go through the other classes in the future as well. It's great that Odyssey is continuously able to retain their amazing teachers for so many years.

I signed up my daughter for after care through 4CS, which is a program that helps low income families afford child care services. I got a really negative vibe from Jamie right away. She had told me that 4CS was giving them extra payments beyond tuition that I asked her to use towards the $200/month they were charging me directly for transportation because they told me that it wasn't covered by 4CS. I kept asking Jamie to ask the 4CS payments coordinator if they could use those extra payments for my transportation costs, since that money was meant to help me with child care costs after all. Jamie then proceeded to outright lie to me (as I just found out yesterday, 6 months later). She told me she had not received a response from 4CS. I had to keep asking several times and she lied to me several times. I feel she was waiting for me to send a frustrated email so that she could show Jerelyn that I didn't deserve to get MY money back. After receiving that frustrated email from me, Jerelyn responded and told me I was being unprofessional and that they would not be returning MY money to me, instead they decided to use it for their scholarship fund. I went back and forth with Jerelyn until she sent me a screenshot that showed that Jamie had gotten a response back from 4CS saying that they could use that money 'however they liked' back in early February. So, Jamie lied to me for months and she would end those lying emails with 'have a lovely day! Warmly, Jamie'. So disgusting. I showed both of them proof yesterday that Jamie outright lied to me for months and I haven't heard anything back since then.

Our son spent two years in the Butterfly class at Challenge School's San Mateo campus, and…read morehonestly, sending him here is one of the best decisions we've made as parents. When he first started, he was a quiet little boy. He'd come home from his old, all-English school and barely say a word about his day, and making friends never came easily to him. That slowly changed here. From his very first days, Challenge felt safe to him, and bit by bit he came out of his shell -- chatting about his friends, laughing more, growing into the outgoing, happy kid we'd always hoped to see. Watching that happen has meant more to us than we can put into words. So much of it comes down to the teachers. He adores Teacher Francis and greets him with a hug every single morning, and there's a genuine tenderness in the way the teachers treat the kids -- right down to the little nicknames they have for each of them. What really stayed with us, though, is how the school shows up when things get hard. Last year our son got bigger and full of energy, and his afternoon nap started keeping him up later and later at night. Bedtime turned into a nightly battle -- some nights we were still at it past midnight, and the whole family was exhausted. When we brought it up, they didn't just nod and move on; they sat down and worked through it with us. They offered to move him to the after-school class, and -- knowing how much his friends mean to him -- suggested he could still spend his mornings with his original class so he wouldn't lose them. His sleep eventually sorted itself out and we never needed to make the switch, but the fact that they were so willing to bend for one family told us everything. His Mandarin has blossomed here, and so has his confidence in English. He mostly speaks Mandarin, but Teacher Hanan gently coaxed him up for Show & Tell each week, and he went from not wanting to say a word to standing in front of the class and telling his story in English. The teachers keep a close, caring eye on the whole child, too -- they check in with us often about how he's doing with his learning, his play, his communication -- and they're always adjusting to help him along. And it's simply a joyful place to be a kid. He's forever bringing home crafts and drawings, he helps look after the classroom plants, and he counts down to every holiday they celebrate -- Easter, Halloween, Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day. We're deeply grateful to Francis, Hanan, Nicole, and everyone at Challenge School. If you're looking for a warm, bilingual preschool where your child will be truly seen and truly cared for, we couldn't recommend it more.

Even though Challenge is a bilingual Mandarin immersion school and our family is Korean, every box was checked the moment we walked in. We immediately noticed the safe, clean and warm environment, the kind and nurturing teachers, the exceptionally well-maintained space, and the highly organized, thoughtful curriculum. Every teacher my daughter has had or currently has--Teacher Catherine, Teacher Joannie, Teacher Lilly, Teacher Stephanie, Teacher Jing, Teacher Min Min, Teacher Hong Li, and Teacher Xiang--continues to foster her growth, act as a positive role model, and provide incredible care and education. In just about over a year, our almost 3 year old daughter can understand, speak, recite poems, and sing in Mandarin, despite us not speaking a word of it at home! Her English also exploded after attending Challenge. But the teachers go far beyond language by weaving in essential life skills. They teach core values like fairness, kindness, and respect . They give opportunities for each child to respond, stand up in front if the classroom, even donate books to build a sense of pride and confidence. They promote healthy eating through hands-on activities--from gardening and harvesting vegetables to actually making wontons! They integrate Chinese culture while ensuring families of all backgrounds, including our Korean family, feel completely included and celebrated. Best of all, the teachers are highly responsive and act as true partners in parenting. If I ever bring up a typical toddler concern, such as body safety and curiosity, they will often incorporate a supportive lesson for the class the very next morning! I truly can't say enough great things about this school and the amazing experience our family has had so far. It's no wonder my friends have raved about Challenge School (all at different locations). As a parent who wants to give my child the best, safest, and most nurturing environment possible, this was the best decision ever. By the end of her time, she was able to write her name, perform with her class in front of an audience of parents and families, and was just overall confident and happy. She adored her teachers and did so many great art projects. It honestly made our transition to a new school harder, because she missed her old school so much. Additionally, I took great comfort in the steps they took to keep our kids safe when COVID was so uncertain and the restrictions were ever-changing. Plus, the catered lunch/snack each day and the extended hours were AMAZING for us as busy working parents. Full disclosure, this is an "old school" place which was an adjustment for us -- so many of my friends receive texts, photos, videos, and multiple updates throughout the day from their kids' care providers. At Foster City Preschool, they welcome phone calls from parents, but the only real updates you get are handwritten on the bulletin board each day by the teachers. This was difficult at the beginning when she couldn't communicate what she did each day, but as she got more comfortable, older, and more verbal, it was pretty fun matching the teachers' letters to her own accounts of the day! Overall we recommend Foster City Preschool and plan to send our younger daughter here before SMFCSD as well.
