I hired one of the crews because they were working at a neighbor's home I can not say anything negative about any of the crew. They all knew what to do. They were knowledgeable, efficient, friendly, careful with my property and did all the work I asked them to do. They worked on my trees for about two hours. When they had finished they cleaned up all the debris and left the property and in front of the property as clean as though a street sweeper had just come down the street. We have been using this tree service for several years and they have proven to be very reliable and responsive. Our most recent experience with Off the Top involved a Huge limb that fell on our elderly neighbor's property. This was a stressful situation and it was a comfort to be able to reach out and have a response almost immediately, and an estimate within 48 hours, with the job to be completed 3 days later. The tree was cleared away in less than a week from my initial call. When Danny came by to look at the job, he was very thorough, knowledgeable and conscientious. He takes the time to explain his assessment and uses analogies that illustrate his meaning. While he was here, I took the opportunity to ask about other trees, and he answered my questions patiently, without exploiting the chance to make extra sales. The day of the job, the guys showed up when he said they would and took the time to carefully assess the job, and go over it with me to make sure we were on the same page. Marlon was the crew leader, (hopefully that's spelled correctly), and he was very personable and professional. He made sure to confirm with me that they had permission to work on my neighbors property. They were also agreeable and friendly to another neighbor who asked to take the wood from the job. I should've been leery once I saw that the company header on the estimate shows them operating under a different name than the one under which they were established; XYZ Tree Service & Landscaping, Inc DBA Off The Top Tree Service. There must be a reason why they'd use a different name, I soon found it. I had several companies give estimates on the work I wanted done. Two trees (a double Locust) removed including grinding down the stumps, grind three additional stumps from trees I had felled late last season & remove all debris from those. I also had a hanging branch that was cut from one of the too-tall trees I had started to limb but it would not come down because it had grown toward other trees at the back fence line & vines around that tree had wrapped around the branch, so they were to remove that "hanger" as well. I also got estimates that included the removal of those two trees (another double Locust) at the back fence. I originally intended to do all the work myself but three felled trees later (smaller than the Locusts) & I realized that the Locusts are too tall to fell from the ground & they need someone to climb up & top them off so they don't fall on anything important. Yeah, I'm not built for climbing & don't want to see how easy the claim service is for my homeowner's insurance so I decide to stop for the day. I intended to spend the next weekend cleaning up all that I had felled but we were hit with a massive snow storm & that was the end of that. So, it's now getting warmer & I want to get the rest of the tree work done so I call some local companies. The next closest estimate I received was $800 or $1300 with the double Locust at the back fence containing the hanger. Off The Top was $600 or $900 with the 2nd double Locust. The guy who came here (leaving out his name intentionally) was just about the nicest guy you'd ever hope to meet. Personable, sincere, polite, funny. I wanted to hang-out with the guy & have a few beers. Forget the estimate, tell me more about your '68 Camaro. He saw my '70 Chevelle in the driveway, that's what we started talking about before any business. Then he tells me that I must've went to school with the owner Danny because he graduated the same year as me & I grew up in Deer Park, too. I'm also a Paramedic so I got a FF/LEO/EMS discount. All that considered is why he gave me the price he did. I finally get the money together & I give them a call to schedule the work. Unfortunately, I'm not dealing with the estimator & I start getting the run around. "We can't tell you an exact date. We'll call you the night before. We don't work on weekends." One night I come home from work & it looks like one of the trees had shifted toward my house after a recent wind storm, I was very lucky to find they left me a voice message while I was at work that they were coming that next day. I called-in to my job & lost a day's pay. They said they'd be there between 2 & 4pm but didn't show until 6:30pm. As soon as the guys got out of the truck, they started complaining that there was no way they were getting this done today... & "I think I just saw lightning". So they make a call & now I'm on the phone with the boss. He's treating me like I'm a bother rather than a customer, talking to me like he's doing me a favor rather than being paid for a job. He tells me he's charging so little that's it's "almost not worth the hassle" but promises that it will get done, just let them start & do as much as they can since they're already there. I agreed because what choice did I have. They were there less than 15 minutes before the worst downpour of the year began, sending them running to their truck. 10 minutes later, I get a knock on the door from one of them telling me they're leaving. So I lost a day's pay & nothing was accomplished. I get a few phone calls soon after from both the estimator & the boss. The boss thought he was calling someone else & hurried me off the phone while I was asking when they'd come back, "I'll call you right back but I have another problem I have to deal with". That's when the guy who did the estimate calls me & apologizes for the delay, promising that they will get the work done as soon as possible, "but It's not my call when they come back. You need to talk to Danny". The next Friday, I talk to my landscaper. I had no idea they also did tree work & he offered to do the job for $1200. I accept & he makes an appointment that's convenient for me, not him. A week later, Danny calls me at work to say they're coming right now. I tell him his services are no longer required. "Almost not worth the hassle"?!? I didn't price the estimate & EVERY customer is important. It's a wonder he's still in business, maybe that explains the DBA company name. Bad reputation, change the name, repeat. I will warn everyone I know away from this company. I hope the estimator gets a better job working for nicer people, he's too good of a person to be representing this company! read more

Neighbors were actually shocked by how inexpensive Off the Top was compared to the work that they provided. I got 6 trees cut back/pruned. The work was done within 2 days of getting the estimate. The crew of 6 showed up and within an hour of work, pruned and cut back 6 trees perfectly. They did a great job and cleaned up everything entirely. You couldn't even tell they were there. Well, I have to tell you Off the Top Tree Service will not disappoint you. We needed some trees cut down and the estimator showed up at the scheduled time, gave us a fair estimate (right in the middle of other estimates) and we hired them. The experienced team of workers that showed up obviously takes pride in their work. They told us what they were doing, how they were doing and cleaned everything up. I also wanted my neighbors tree cut back, he told me I need permission. My neighbor wrote out everything, nicest guy ever. When they arrived the cut back his tree and didn't touch mine! The guy said my estimate doesn't include that tree and they leave. The guy said the owner would call me so they could come back and resolve this... no one ever called. read more

My neighbor hired Off The Top to remove a large oak tree that was dying and a hazard, as it was their front lawn . We share a front lawn. We also have a very narrow street and the houses are close to each other.The workers were pleasant, but they put their chain saws and gas cans on my newly planted landscape. I asked them to please be careful of my landscape. They tried, but didn't always remember. When I saw the men climbing the tree with their chain saws , I asked why they did not have a bucket truck? They responded that it was broken. They worked until 3:30-3:45' not completing the job and after cutting a very large pie shape into the base of the tree. I asked" Why are you leaving now"? They responded by saying "The boss called and said we have to go to another job". They left huge logs on the lawn and and a very large tree truck, that was height of the house, with that large pie cut out of the tree trunk.I have in the past had a 100' tree cut down! a bucket truck was used! and they worked until the job was done. That is what I expected to be done here. The next day 3 workers returned and when asked why they left the large trunk with the pie shape cut out, I was told " You people always complain, I come from Lindenhurst and we don't complain." This is not your house, so mind your business, let the professionals get back to work". It was OK when my driveway was blocked all day and my lawn and landscape was used as a catch all for all their things. I even gave a worker a bottle of water on the first day. When they finally removed the large trunk the next day by using ropes and letting the trunk fall to the ground, 2 of the workers were almost hit by the falling trunk. I do not feel that this job was done in a professional way. read more

I would strongly recommend "Off The Top Tree Service" for tree cutting services. Rod from Off the Top Tree service, came and gave an estimate for my big maple tree (around 40 plus feet tall) in my backyard which was also arching into my neighbors backyard. His estimates were competitive and were in-line with other estimates received from other companies. His crew of six members came on time (in fact 15 mins early) and did a fabulous job. As they could not bring the heavy machinery in the backyard due to space limitation, his crew climbed the tree in a very professional manner and cut limb by limb taking care not to damage any property surrounding the tree. After cutting the tree they ensured my yard and my neighbor's backyard were cleaned. My neighbor had 4 trees damaged in the hurricane. Parts of them came down in my yard and 2 other neighbors. Off the Top was hired by the neighbor to remove the branches. I went out to see how it was going, and they said my yard wasn't included in the estimate, so they wouldn't remove it. We had moved all the branches into one pile for them to remove; it would have taken 10 minutes. I then noticed that their workers were on the roof of my shed, and cutting branches into my yard. I told the foreman that if they weren't going to clean my debris, they should get off my roof. They had not even bothered to ask for permission to come on my property. The foreman called the owner, who asked why I was giving them his men a hard time. HARD TIME? You don't go on someone's property without their permission. They finally removed the debris. It took 5 minutes. I found out later they charged my neighbor extra for the work. read more

I am over the moon pleased with the work performed by Off the Top Tree service and so glad I did not see the reviews on Yelp before I had my work done. I really do not know what company they are talking about, but it cannot be this one. My husband and I had some pretty bad tree damage in the hurricane in our house that we just moved into a little over a month before the storm. As we are on a budget after just buying our dream house, we first feebly tried to do the work ourselves and then relented to the idea of getting help. We brought in 4 companies total to get quotes and they were all pretty similar in price within a few hundred dollars of each other, with this company actually being the most reasonable both in price and in the speed at which they could do our job. In fact, after we gave them the green light, they had our work done and our yard back in shape within 2 weeks while other companies were quoting us 4-5 weeks. Today was the day for the work to be done and I worked from home so that I could be on site. The crew was on time and went straight to work. I got a little concerned when I saw clouds coming in, and without me saying a word to the workers about my concerns, they called in reinforcements to ensure that they job was done today. In fact, I am now realizing that the owner showed up onsite to help the men finish before the rain. They worked diligently and effectively, being able to complete our big clean up job in 3.5 hrs and did an amazing job! My husband came home shortly after they left and he too was amazed at the fantastic work done. They were professional, did not do any damage to my property or our fence (despite a fallen tree hanging over the fence line suspended between the branches of another tree), finished quickly, were the best price and went above and beyond. The owner, Danny, is so meticulous that he saw a loose branch on a tree that was not even part of the original quote and he had the men bring him a chain saw to trim off the loose branch. I would without question hire this company to do my work if it was ever needed again. We were so impressed we asked if they did grading and landscaping as we were in need of a contractor to both. read more

used them in feb 2012 to take down a large tree and stump grinding.,because they were the cheapest. however u get what u pay for. it took them a while to come after they gave me an estimate in january, and they wouldn't give me an exact date and time that they were coming. when they came, they were not careful doing the stump grinding . the stump grinding machine busted 3 hoses and 2 sprinkler heads in 2 zones of my sprinkler system and damaged a section of my neighbors pvc fence. i did not notice this till after they were paid and left. when i called them to report what they did, they said they were not responsible for the damage and would not fix it., even though they are licensed and insured. i told them i would buy the sprinkler parts if they could send someone to fix the damage they did. they said they would. i have been waiting since feb and they still have not come. everytime i call, they say they are coming on the weekend , but never show up. when i call ,they tell me they were busy and couldn't come. it is now the end of may and they still have not come back to fix the damages. if u decide to use them because they are cheap, make sure u do not pay them before u inspect your property before they leave, because they will not come back once they have your money. read more
