Place is going down the drains, last time I came here service was awesome but it seems like management does care about service any more this time around. Place is under staffed for how busy it gets. They have only 3 servers on a Friday night each handling around 8 tables each. Also did I forget to mention there is no bar tender, meaning servers have to make drink, therefore slower service!!!!!! This place is not the same anymore . I ordered a causa de pollo and the causa was tasteless... Couldn't feel the aji amarillo in the potato and the chicken was meh, was seasoned with mayo only... No celery or veggies, only a piece of avocado that was getting ripe ,getting that black look around it . I decided to order la sopa a la minuta and it wasn't good either. Must have been a bad day for me ! My soup was too spicy for my taste ... Way too much aji panca or red seasoning. Definitely I wouldn't order it again ... Oh Calamares is expensive and awful. One time we ordered takeout for two ceviches from them and they smelled like they had been outside the fridge all day long. They smelled like rotten fish. We tried calling back and no one answered and we paid like $60 for them. Recently we went with my family to eat. Mistake I don't know what we were thinking. We ordered a fried fish and it was frozen inside. There is a more humble restaurant called el Limon a bit further down and they make the best ceviche in Kearny all for a much more affordable price than Oh Calamares and they have the best arroz chaufa with a special spicy sauce. I've been here many times. It can be a hassle on Fridays, weekends and holidays to get a seat since there is no reservation. The music can be very loud to the point that you can't hear yourself speak lol But, the food is the true reason why I'm a fan. I love their fried corn kernels with that spicy green sauce. The menu dishes were mostly unknown names to us, thank god they had an English description. We started with a pitcher of Coors first. * I ordered their specialty dish Chicken Calamares and was pleased to have done that. It was a hugely appetizing curry, served on a big oval dish, featuring cubes of chicken, potatoes, baby carrots, beans etc. Very filling and super tasty. * It also features a full bar with TV's beaming soccer. Unbelievable absolutely the best Tres Leches cakes ever. But that was the end let me start with my main course which was a fried seafood platter was very fresh and delicious. Regret entering this Restaurant for the first time. From beginning till the end. The Sangria was awful, taste like Hawaiian Punch. The mussel appetizer was extremely salty. And twice my steamed fish came out raw. Then the Waitrest insisted that I still had to pay for the fish and mussels that was never eaten !!! Good thing there was an off duty Police Officer and his Family sitting directly next to us complaining about their meals aswell. The one star I'm giving this restaurant is for the Salsa music. I went there after my friends recommended this place to me. But ordering food there is a really tough thing for me. I need to read all the detail on the menu to understand what exactly for a dish. The waitress was very nice and patience to give us some suggestions. One entree attract me so much but unfortunately I forgot the name. It a very popular entree in that restaurant. First time here . From the outside it looks like a regular dive kinda place . Once you walk inside though it is surprisingly nice . There is a full bar with a decent wine list And it's dimly lit with candles with Latin music playing in the background . The waitress's are very nice and the service was good . The menu is great . A lot of Chinese influence mixed with Peruvian . Had the chaufa ( fried Peruvian rice ) with shrimp . Large portion and very tasty . Also had the half chicken with ahi Amarillo . Was very good . I had 2 glasses of 2009 Valencia Spanish red and that was a perfect match . The prices are not "cheap" but also not overboard , as the portions are big. Also it's not "cheap" food . Delicious food! I have been here numerous times with my family. Our favorites are the Aji de Gallina and the Bistec a lo Pobre. The only complaint I have would be the live entertainment being a bit too loud. I go with my kids so they do end up getting a bit irritated. Would I give them less than 5 stars for that? Not at all. Disappointed. My family of 6 came all the way from Miami, where we normally get great Peruvian food. But I took my NJ and NY family to this place because we heard so many things about Oh Calamares but ended up being Oh so disappointed. For a party of 16 people they didn't want to give us any break when we complained for a horrible salmon en salsa de pisco. Five of us tried it and it was awful, both the salmon and the pisco sauce!!. In my case, my pescado a lo macho was pretty average, cold and NOT spicy at all. But it was at least yellow!!! The waitress was helpful but only reacted to our complaint when I mentioned the last name of the owner (I am a journalist and happened to know that one of the owners was in the premises). They gave us 50 percent discount in that dish. I mean for a large party and being this a small restaurant I was expecting more attention to detail. When a reputable place gets a complaint the manager shows up in no time and takes over the whole situation. DO NOT expect that at Oh Calamares!! And one more thing: we were there for probably an hour and a half and on a Friday evening they didn't even have not even one Peruvian song. I can honestly say that when it comes to really good Peruvian food that is one of the best spots to go in this area, however, they get 2 stars because I left with an unbearable headache. The live music was so LOUD the waitress couldn't hear our order, we had to repeat ourselves like five times until we gave up and wrote it down for her. We have eaten here four times and had take out four additional times. The ceviche is without comparison (with the exception maybe of Pio Pio). Always delicious and fresh. We have had the saltado dishes, the chaufas, as well as the parihuela soup, the heart appetizer, and the picante seafood dish. There has never been a reason to complain. The service is also top notch. Last night our meal was taking longer than usual and they quickly apologized, offering free drinks (they also offer delicious cocktails) to compensate our wait. The place is cute, the food is good, the papa and piscos are great, the service not so great. She checked on us once. We had to wave our hands to get her attention to get the bill. After sitting there for 15 mins, we decided to just bring the bill up to the front to pay because she never returned to get it. We went on a Friday night. I guess it's karaoke night on Friday's? Well, they keep the lights off to the point that people around us (including us) had to pull out our flashlights from the phone to see what was on our plates! The music was SO LOUD, that it was impossible to hear each other if you're having dinner. I've been to other restaurants/had dinner with karaoke or even a "show" going on but this was ridiculous. The worst service!!! If youre hungry and want to stay hungry this is the place for you. I never write these but for this spot I had too. Our waiter did not introduce himself nor was he friendly at all. The best is how he never returned to check on our table not ONCE. We were his only table and still he could care less. Even tho this restaurant has amazing food their service always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Their is rarely anyone at the door to greet and seat their customers , but theirs a sign clearly stating you have to wait to be seated. On my last visit here I joking asked the person who finally acknowledged us if they were hiring hostesses since we felt they were in need of one. He arrogantly made up a crappy excuse and made us feel even less comfortable then when we got their. No matter what happens behind the scenes of a business it's never the customer fault for waiting or becoming a bit annoyed at no being acknowledged. Haven't been here in over a year an how the service has completely changed. Waited over 30 after being seated for a waitress to come and ask about beverages and food being ordered. The food took over 40 min for the food to be served when asked for more "cancha" they supposedly ran out and the waitress never came back to ask us if we needed anything. Horrible !!! Constantly had to be chasing her down for a refill of the drinks. The food was bland and not season correctly especially the ceviche . Once we wanted the check they took forever to bring the check!
