Our next review was the family-run Old Black Forest Restaurant that has operated for years. This review is for the newest restaurant to open in Mahone Bay called 'Oh My Cod!' Love the name and décor! It's contemporary, but warm and welcoming. Located in the former Gazebo Café on Main Street, it is amazing what a keen sense of style can do to lift a space from the ordinary to something special. Personally, I cannot wait until the warmer months to enjoy meals alfresco on the waterfront deck. Oh My Cod!'s menu is limited, but offers some interesting breakfast and lunch/ dinner options. Old favorites like Fish & Chips (Cod of coarse or Haddock), Beef Burger (garlic or curry sauce), and Mussels are all on the menu. The bacon wrapped scallops on a skewer looked amazing and will definitely be ordered on our next visit. James E. and I enjoyed the Maple Butternut Squash 'Soup of Today' and the Dockside Burgers which had very moist and flavourful patties that were nicely dressed with the usual condiments and lots of cheese and apple smoked bacon. Personally, I would have preferred a toasted bun rather than one that was warmed, but dry and pale. I also found the grey colour of the hand cut fries a bit off-putting, yet they tasted good. James wasn't put off by the fries or bun, but he felt the curry flavour was too subtle. The mild garlic flavoured sauce suited me just fine. Home-made desserts displayed in the front case certainly caught my eye. We ordered the sticky toffee pudding which was moist, light and delicious with a cup of excellent coffee. Looking forward to popping in for after dinner desserts since they all looked so delicious. Both drinks and dessert menus are generous in comparison with the lunch/dinner options. All in all, food was freshly prepared, generously portioned, nicely presented and delivered hot. Given this is their second week in business, Oh My Cod! can't be faulted for a few missteps. It's great to have another restaurant in Mahone Bay that offers good home-style cooking and friendly service at good prices. Oh My Cod! is definitely worth a try. Lots of reserved tables and walk-ins on a Friday night in Mahone Bay so it looks like it's going to be a popular spot. The food was tasty, the servers were very pleasant but the owner was very rude not once but twice, and that's a deal breaker for me! We arrived at 2pm party of 8 looking for a table on the ocean side I was informed that "that's not going to happen" ok so what can we do? Well if you don't mind waiting we can have a table on the street side in about 15 mins and pointed for us to wait on the side walk... ok so yes he was a bit rude but they're busy so I kinda brushed it off then while waiting one of our group is looking over to see how close we are to being seated and the guy says " staring is not going to get your table any quicker" The only reason we stayed is for a friend who was on crutches! I understand from the staff that this man is the owner so I'd like to remind this owner that there are great places to eat all over Mahone Bay and Lunenburg with a whole lot less attitude! read more

This place might just serve the best chowder in the province. It's on the pricier side, but the portion size is huge and full of lobster (a must in any chowder - I don't order chowders that don't have lobster in it!) mussels, scallops and haddock and, of course, cod! There's also carrots onions and potatoes and my only real complaint is that the amount of potatoes was a bit much. It's already a very hearty soup and having that much potato in in makes it difficult to finish. The broth is on point though - nice an savoury and near perfect. Not to thick, not too watery. Oh my Cod has the perfect Mahone Bay atmosphere. It's the perfect place to find yourself on a Summers day. I tried their specialty drink of the day and it was DELICIOUS. Fresh mint, fruity and delicious. My husband and I both got the fish and chips. It was good, my husband is a big guy and it was smaller portions considering the price. But fries were yummy and fish was fresh (we saw live shipments of mussels coming in as we sat there!!) The homemade dessert is why you go though. Drool. We visited here on a Thursday afternoon around 2 pm. We were seated on the patio and waited about 10 mins for a server to come over. She told us that we were welcome to order but the food was taking 30-40 mins to come out. We thought about it and decided to stay. I ordered the lobster croissanwich and my partner the fish and chips. The food did take a long time to come out but it was good once it arrived. A generous portion of lobster and a mountain of crisp fries. I noticed lots of people ordering the scallops, and truth be told I wish I had ordered them too! They looked delicious. Some of the prices were a little extreme like $16 for one piece fish and chips and another $8 for a second price but it's a tourist town and they don't mind paying that much. Found this place on way to Lunenburg. Liked the name and thought we'd check it out. Both front and back patios were full. So it's gotta be good, right?? And yes it was. Lobster croissant was delicious. Fish and chips were amazing. Lobster poutine got a thumbs up from our 13 year old food critic, while the 15 yo foodie was all over the smoked salmon sandwich. The deserts were also fantastic. Try the lemon lush pie. That's all I'm gonna say. Service was a bit slow, but it was peak of lunch crowd and they did tell us the kitchen was behind. One of two excellent eateries in Mahone Bay (along with Mateus). Doubling as an ice cream shop, it has a very informal feel. But don't let that fool you....the food is top notch. Excellent fish tacos (generous portions of batter dipped cod or haddock with interesting slaw and chutney if memory serves)...great spinach salad and fish and chips on a 2nd visit. Nice hand-formed burger with well-seasoned addicting onion rings....crispy, not greasy at all. Had a can of really nice pale ale from the new brewery in town. Unfortunately, I am not able to comment on the quality of the food .... The website recommends making a reservation and even allows for online reservations. Friends and I made a 1:30 reservation on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival for our reservation, we were told that the reservation policy had changed due to the large number of walk-ins. They did not have an available table for our reservation and it would be roughly a 20 minute wait. Imagine our shock and disappointment. Very poor customer service is why I have rated 1 star. read more
