Today, I was in a Pittsburgh city bus heading out of town and it was nearly hilarious watching our bus driver merging from the various on-ramps to get across the Monongahela River. He was only successful because people are scared of buses. Otherwise, I'd probably still be there! With a clearance over the river of 471 feet and a total length of 1207 feet, the bridge is impressively awesome considering that it is over sixty years old. It was an achievement for the time as the first computer-designed bridge in the world. The bridge is painted a bright yellow and there is no toll to cross it in either direction. I'm a fan. In fact, the last part of that construction was finished in 1986 when the main part of the bridge had been open since 1963. Dubbed "The Bridge to Nowhere". Like all bridges in Pittsburgh, it's a magnificent piece of infrastructure composed of steel. It's well maintained and is handy for connecting to various parts of the city.

The bridge has a pedestrian walkway that makes it easy to get back and forth from downtown. In fact, when working downtown, this was one of my daily lunch walking routes. Thankful for my hometown and all that's come of it and from it. Warhol was a genius as is this and all of the bridges in our city.

People are afraid of the "tunnel monster" and slam on their brakes when entering. And, if there is any sort of incident around it, the traffic backups are crazy. It was build and designed for significantly less traffic than it sees every day. And that is very apparent because even when it isn't rush hour, construction or some major event there is still usually a backup right around the tunnel. That being said, the tunnel is well maintained. It just makes commuting from/to the east a bit of a nightmare.

It's the gateway to and from Parkway East which is a clustered poo show. For real. Don't even think about heading inbound or outbound during peak times. The Sewickley Bridge is hit-or-miss . . . it's either gonna be all backed up with traffic . . . or it is gonna be empty. Most of the time, it's loaded with cars, otherwise, it serves its purpose, which is crossing the river from one side to the other . . . Cheers!

I happened to hit it at one of those times. What would normally be a 1 minute crossing turned out to be a 45 minute detour! The Sewickley bridge connects the road to the Sewickley business district on one side and Coraopolis on the other. As others have said it can be hit or miss with this bridge because of the traffic lights at each end and the turning lanes onto it. It crosses the Ohio River and makes it a bit easier to get to Moon Twp and to the Sewickley business district from there. Other than that please be aware of the fact that this is the Penn dot chosen detour for the I 79 bridge.

A couple of great things about the bridge include the memorable implosion of the old bridge (then the dismantling and recycling of the steel) and the Hulton Bridge Hoax, which claimed the Hulton Bridge had an engineering error where the two sides weren't being built properly. I had hoped the old bridge could be saved as a pedestrian crossing, but the claim was the project was too expensive. Too bad, because it was a great idea.

Once you exit Rt 28 you have about a 3 mile drive through the town of Blawnox and then as you approach it stay in the right lane. At that point you are on it. It is a very nice bridge connecting to Oakmont and holds two lanes each way. Once off you can either stay straight to head into the heart of Oakmont or turn right to go to the business district. Oakmont has a lot to explore besides the outstanding bakery so it is my hope once the weather improves to check out more restaurants and other businesses this neighborhood has to offer.

This is a great place to take pictures or go for a walk. I do wish Eastside Development was a little more cool about people parking on the deck and walking across the bridge, so hopefully that will change. The bridge was designed by Pittsburgh native artist Sheila Klein. It features thousands of glass sequins made at the Pittsburgh Glass Center and railings that were salvaged from the 31st Street Bridge.

You are steps away from the business district, where you can find dinner, ice cream, and pubs. Parking is on the street, and although spaces are scarce, they turn over fairly quickly.
