Depending on the weather patterns, it can be chilly and rainy or, as it was this past weekend, warm and sunny. It's held the last Friday and Saturday in September and amounts to a parade, row of food vendors, a tent or building where you can buy locally made cheeses, local shops in the village of Sugarcreek open for browsing (which can be done any day), Swiss competitions (steinstossen, etc), music from local oompah bands and loads of people watching. This year was the first where I've seen some of the local wineries combined with the cheese vendors to create a very cool small scale wine tasting. It's not a full day's worth of activities, but given the location, with the drive, some local shopping, and dinner, you're doing the whole day. Don't miss out on getting some cheese. The swiss is to die for. Also consider taking a walk through Andreas furniture store. Finally, if you're bored with the festival, continue on the way down OH-39 and follow the signs to Berlin. There are loads of Amish shops and restaurants there. The countryside is quite scenic too.

It was not crowded downtown Sugarcreek just yet, but it was about to be. I was welcomed by the friendliest staff who briefly explained the lay out and I was on my way. Lots of cool antiques and history of Sugarcreek and a lot about both the Swiss and Amish heritage of the area. It is an old building with creaking floors (which adds to the charm!) so when you are downstairs you can hear the people walking above you. There is a very small gift shop up front and I didn't buy anything, but there were a few cute souvenir trinkets. I can't wait to come back and bring my son.

We walked in and entered the room with all of the bottles for sale. I asked where they do tastings and the staff told us that is in the next room over. When we went in, I asked what we needed to do in order to taste. (there are large signs at the "bar" area that they do not do tastings at the bar). We were greeted with a "go over to one of the tables" but kind of with an attitude like we should have known better to just go over to a table instead of asking a question. Once we did visit a table, there is a list of wines on a paper and pens. You can taste as many as you want, but can only sample four at a time. Samples are 50 cents each. I enjoyed some of the dryer reds, but wasn't a fan of certain specialty ones (the dandelion one really intrigued me but both my husband and I disliked it). The person doing the sampling the day we were there didn't seem to like the fact that I was asking questions about the wine and the winery. There was a definite attitude. Maybe it is because we weren't regulars or seemed like we wouldn't buy or something. But it was definitely off putting. The staff in the front room were definitely much friendlier and accommodating. Overall, a fun stop, but not one I'd rush back to next time I'm in the area.

The wine was good. I sampled 4 dry red wines and my husband sampled some of the semi- sweet wines. We then got a glass/ bottle and ordered pizza then went to the barn. We waited almost an entire hour for a subpar small pizza priced at $14 at 6:30ish. The wine lady said they would be open until 7 for wines as we went up to buy a couple bottle before we left the lights were off and doors were unlocked but no one inside so wasn't able to buy a bottle. More thoughts needs to go into The barn space, a nice rustic "venue" but the thought into running a smooth winery just wasn't there that night.

On site, they have a charming shop with a variety of household decor items. They also have a variety of knives. The reason the space exists, though, is because of the intricate ivory carvings. The museum space itself is kind of small, but there are a variety of historical ships depicted. It is incredible how intricate he was able to get with something as delicate as ivory. So much detail and so many tiny and thin pieces. I never would have thought it was possible! I was curious about how the ivory was acquired since I know that is a hot topic, and it was all ethically sourced through either antiques or other legal means. The building is meticulous and the staff extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The museum was affordably priced (they even have a family rate of $25) and worth it if you are looking for something different and unique to experience.

This man's grandfather Ernest Warther carved trains out of ebony and ivory. He passed this talent on to his grandson David. What Ernest did in trains, David has done in sailing vessels. The intricacy of the work, the overarching attention to detail and the pure artistic genius that goes into these carvings is nothing short of amazing. Each one will capture your attention for different reasons. Whether it is the bold lines, the intricate sailing vessels with all their masts and rope or the ornate scrimshaw on some of these pieces, the experience is amazing. There is no other collection like this one in the world. This is not your typical stuffy art museum. Every piece is fascinating and exciting. Everything is hand carved from legally and ethically sourced ivory. We were fortunate enough to arrive while the artist was working in his in house workshop. He came out and met all of us and showed us how he perfects all the myriad of tiny intricate ropes on his sailing vessels. Everything is carved. Nothing is manufactured elsewhere and added to the pieces. The gift shop was nice and well stocked. The whole place is clean, wheelchair accessible and pieces are well lit. Bathrooms were in good shape when we were there. This is a must stop destination if you are in the Sugarcreek area.

We weren't IDd for alcohol that was ordered by 3/4 of us(I ordered pop). She slammed our food down. was hardly attentive in the almost 2.5 hours we were there. Our food came out nearly cold, as if it had died in the window. I was given dirty looks by Faith from the moment I walked in. She never cleared dishes, we had to go up and get our checks. To put the cherry on top, our car was heavily keyed on BOTH passengers and the drivers side. The owner was told and NOTHING has been done He was notified of the incident as well. Absolutely ridiculous, that was our first time dining there and will be our last. I've never felt so unwelcome and so uncomfortable because of my server.
