We ordered take out from Oishii after calling in our order. They're located in the small restaurant villa across from Hunter Valley Gardens on McDonalds Road. Gyoza Undercooked, barely a char on the bottom. Soggy. They packed in a small container of soy sauce and vinegar. Fish Salad Mayo for dressing - I wish they had other options. The mixed greens are great - vibrant, crispy and clean. Nice selection of salmon, tuna, albacore and shrimp (the only cooked meat). Edamame Pretty regulary, salted on the outside. Chicken Teriyaki Bento Comes with rice, miso soup and a small salad (also with mayo). Chicken okay, but the sauce was very watery. That's all.. read more

2022 - Apr, Hunter Valley: Visited here during the Easter long weekend. Now it's widely understood that the Easter weekend is the busiest weekend in the Hunter Valley, and when we asked for a table Oishii was fully booked; not such a big deal. After asking about takeaway we were asked to order inside, only to be harangued by a very rude waiter to order online; loudly blaming his trainee waitress. After following the QR on the back of the menu we were advised by a different, yet equally rude waitress, that the wait was 2 hours....needless to say, the service was significantly better at "Goldfish" next door with our takeaway having a 15 minute wait. Can't say if the food at Oishii is worth it, but the service is a joke. Disappointing!! read more

First, the crowd. All the businesses on the estate were packed. People bumping into each other packed. But Oishii takes it to new levels as it appears to be (from our quick Google, anyway) the only restaurant in the region serving Asian food, making it particularly popular with a certain tourist demographic from a much larger nation to the north who are numerous and many of whom have, ahem, different queue etiquette. The queue was a good half hour (not including waiting time post-ordering). Not an enjoyable queue due to the lack of space inside. The waiters do their best with a great attitude and friendliness but there's only so much you can cram before people start walking on each other's feet. The food is what to expect from, say, an airport restaurant in a mid-size city. "Japanese" in the "Japanese-American" way - California rolls rather than ebi and uni. South East Asian actually dominates the menu. The chicken satay was chicken breast in a cream-peanut sauce that bears little resemblance to what you'd get a few thousand km to the west and of course it's already drenched in the sauce when served. It was not, however, toxic or inedible, so Oishii retains 2*. Prices are eye watering but I don't blame them, most of it is rent to the estate, giving access to the steady stream of customers from the car park in the central spot of Pokolbin. The thing is, the Hunter is a foodie heaven with plenty of locally sourced ingredients and great chefs willing to give you so much more for your dollar. And many of the much better restaurants around are almost empty by comparison. Just drive a few minutes further in any direction and stop at any winery's attached eatery... read more

$17.50 for a Pad Thai? $19.90 for a Chicken Cashew Nut? $15.50 for a California Roll? Outrageous!!!!!!!!!!! However it hurts more to pay for crap food compared to paying a surcharge for decent food. Whilst expensive Oishii actually is oishii and the portion sizes are decent. A good feed to set you up for an afternoon of wine tasting in the Hunter! read more

A Thai restaurant that has a Japanese name, which sells a bit of Japanese food. Food are all overpriced, think whatever you can get in an ordinary Sydney food court, triple the price, and you get the idea. Quality, unfortunately, is worse than food court. I didn't see any reason to have Japanese food, knowing it is actually a Thai restaurant. Pad Thai ($20.50) and Pad See Eiw ($20.50, that's Pad Siew in any other Thai restaurant, in case you wonder). We picked this restaurant as it was a short stroll away from our accommodation. The setting is delightful and the wait staff were lovely. The Thai food is very average with the chicken in the pad Thai being very over cooked and the noodles lacking flavour and sauce. The Japanese cuisine on the other hand was fabulous and very large portion of the chicken tepanyaki which came with miso soup . Their corkage is $8 per bottle which is amazing because people tend to want to drink their fabulous wines that they may have bought in the Hunter. Prices are decent for the Hunter . read more

Yuck, no thanks. Found a black hair in the bottom of my plate of my stir fry that I was actually looking forward to. Better yet, the waiters smiled and replaced my plate like nothing happened. I wasn't compensated for it and had to eat it again knowing what had happened before! Bad experience, I would not go back there again because of it. read more

The food was average and expensive, but the real problem was regarding tap water request. They refused to give us tap water and made us buy bottled water for $3 AUD, with the excuse that we were dining out of their restaurant with a 10% off of their New Years Eve menu. However, they were serving alcohol to people eating in or out of their premises, and they also had a BYO policy. Therefore and according to Liquor Act, 2007 they state: "Free drinking water is required to be provided to patrons of licensed venues. These laws recognise the importance of having water available to patrons, particularly those who are dehydrated, taking medication, or for those who want to limit the amount of alcohol they drink." Very quick service, beautifully fresh sushi and delicious panang curry... A little overpriced but great overall

We came here as our usual Hunter Valley dinning experience fell through (we normally dine at Blaxlands but the courtesy bus was fully booked so we thought to try somewhere new). We have walked passed here many times enroute to the Smelly Cheese shop and Tempus Two & always found the outside found it to look intimidating. Lesson learned, do not judge a book by it cover! Decor: The interior is quite no frills with paper cover tables, kimonos hanging on the wall & an electric blue sign (think disco-tech). What ate: Curry puffs -ok, tad under fried, Oishii salad-generous- amount of salmon, Pad Thai-great consistency of noodles, a little too sweet, Panang Duck Curry - hands down hero dish of the night, delicious succulent duck, perfectly cooked veggies, smooth consistency of sauce. We drank:Asahi & Grimms Semi-Sav. We indulged in: Fried ice cream & green tea- rookie choice. Overall-6.5-7/10. It's a standard joint, for Asian cuisine two hours away from Sydney it was decent but not amazing. Service overall could be more attentive (for a tourist location they could probably turn it on a bit more) and the place could do with a furnishing overhaul to create some sort of solid ambience. We probably wouldn't come back as it is spendy Thai/Jap which we could easily get back in Sydney for half the price. read more
