Also, I was looking for a few books and it seems this isn't one of the larger branches so I found the books I wanted were either in Okemos or the main Lansing branch.

Children are noisy and run freely through the quiet study area. Addtionally, you can hear all of…read morethe kids from the children's area too due to the layout. Further, the librarians themselves don't seem to follow the quiet rules. One was chatting loudly in a study room with the door open that was attached to the quiet area. Do not come here if you prefer a quiet library- try Okemos instead. I left before I finished my work because it was so bothersome.

The ELPL is a separate entity and not part of the Capital Area District Library. While a Lansing…read morelibrary card will work in Okemos and so on, it won't in East Lansing. When I first experienced this, I was definitely ticked but it ensures that all the patrons are East Lansing residents. But you don't have to be a resident to browse (public library, duh) or use the free Internet. The books on sale are dirt cheap and, surprisingly, are a decent selection.

The MSU main library has everything you need for research and study. It contains the vast majority of the University's library collection. It also has tons of study locations from loud to quiet, comfy or torturous. The Sparty's cafe stays open late, and open 24 hours during finals. The computers here stink. MSU computers take FOREVER to log in. I have no idea why. There always seems to be a large amount that are not functioning properly. Compared to those available for Engineering students in the Engineering Building, they're flat out awful. The place is over 50 years old and it's really starting to show in some areas. Regardless, they keep it in pretty good shape and it serves its purpose well. As with all university libraries, they need to keep transitioning from being a place for research to a place to study. Hardly anyone goes to the library anymore to search for a book they need. The stacks should be condensed to free up more space for study nooks. They also need to put more electrical outlets in to account for the fact that everyone has a computer now. Piece of advice: Bring a power strip and extension cord with you if the Library is busy. This way you can make a table far from an outlet work and make an outlet that someone else was already using help out multiple people.

I just love the Holt library! It has a MASSIVE selection of books, the librarians are always…read morehelpful and friendly, and there are plenty of activities. I'm particularly fond of the CADL website, where you can choose a book, put it on hold and then have it sent to the library of your choice and pick it up when it's in. Awesome! My one complaint is that the children's room is not particularly large, and it often gets VERY crowded during story times. A door would be nice, too, as it's not unusual for kids (okay, MY kids) to try to wander out into the main library.

They have a nice lobby area that leads to the CADL desk and into the main library. Plenty of street parking in the neighborhood.

I take my kids here for the same, as well as for the trains, the occasional puppet show, and the checkers. This library is awesome enough that my kids would rather go here than the mall. Very small but has everything that I need. I reserve stuffs online and pick it up from this…read morelocation. Easy self scan checkout. This location itself does not have much of anything, but they can get things from other locations of library network. New release movies take a while to get them. Once you reserve it, you don't lose your place in queue. They email pickup notice. Copy is 15 cents per page. Coin operated. Scanner is available. You have to rent one from info desk and hook it up on computers within library. Small scanner, so you have to scan one page each time. Plenty of parking. People working there are very friendly and courteous. They are some dubious grown-ups playing games at computer station all day long. I never had anyone bothering me. So, no problem. There is a uniformed security guard on duty.

I love the smell of this place…read more No matter what, whenever I go here I am transported back in time. The smell of the books is a constant. And for learning, the library is Mecca. Check it out: Their collection includes over 4.5 million volumes, 33,000 magazine and journal subscriptions, 200,000 maps, 40,000 sound recordings, plus access to hundreds of electronic resources. Lots of windows, well lit, plenty of places to sit and study or work, well equipped with electrical outlets and even a coffee and sandwich shop. The building is almost in the center of campus and overlooks the Red Cedar River on one side, and Beaumont Tower on the other and is flanked by Beal Gardens (only one of the best botanical specimen gardens in the Midwest - where I first discovered the Dawn Redwood...sigh). You don't need a student ID to get in, wireless internet is free. Did I say I love this space.

It's a university library. So it can get pretty crowded at times as students are cramming away for…read moreexams. Yes as other reviewers have said it does have a smell... good or bad you can decide for yourself. This library has a lot of areas to study at but good luck finding a good spot some times. It can be filled with chatty inconsiderate students. And students who will also cough on you and not care. Also hearing students talk bad about each other isn't really a positive experience..."She's so weird" etc. There are study rooms with chalk and white boards that's a plus, but you can get kicked out if you're alone and a group wants to use that room. I once got kicked out by a group of "10" students that were allegedly going to cram into a room that would comfortably fit 5 to study in. They're where study rooms that had only one person in it not far from me... I was a little upset as I just had about 40 minutes left of my study session and having had a recent surgery I didn't want to move around a whole lot and set myself up somewhere else to study again. The library probably doesn't get cleaned very often either... for a whole week I went everyday to the same spot to study and the same trash that was on the ground never got picked up and the desk had the same eraser shavings there left by someone else. Some desks/cubicle things also have graffiti as a classy touch... Bathrooms are frequently dirty too. over all it's just an ok library to study in.
