    Bento box and teriyaki chicken
    Jack D.

We stumbled upon Oki 2 Go when we were in desperate need of some quick nosh during a rapidly moving lunch break. Initially sitting in a 'fancier' restaurant across the road, we realised "ain't nobody got time for that" and thought, stuff it, Japanese is always fast. Sure, Oki 2 Go doesn't look like much. In fact, it just looks like your dime-a-dozen Japanese sushi shop, but if you head inside and actually have a look at their a la carte menu you will see endless deliciousness. I went for the Bento Box because a bad bento box simply does not exist - they are always good, satisfying and speedy. Oki 2 Go have multiple boxes to choose one but I went for the safe traditional. My partner on the other hand went for some teriyaki chicken and rice - fresh, delicious and again, speedy. I'm not going to call this a destination diner, but if you are in the area and want something tasty, satisfying and most importantly speedy (have I mentioned they were speedy?) look no further. Your easy peasy lunchbreak destination.

This Japanese restaurant is extremely welcoming, friendly and yummy! I love sushi and feel like any good strip of shops has to have a high quality Japanese take out place. This is the Acland St version. It's always fresh where it's perfect for a quick and healthy take away lunch where they have set it up really nice so it's good to sit inside or outside as well. All the food is very high quality where there isn't much in the way of Japanese in the area so must get a lot of business. The bento boxes are great there where all the items aren't overly expensive where you can get a filling box for around $15. Got to try it if you're looking for a quick bite on Acland St.

This Japanese restaurant is in the perfect place! It's great after a hot summer's day to be able to stop by and get some nice takeaway on the way home from the beach. The Sushi is super fresh and all the food is really good quality. Definitely an added bonus to a stop by the beach!

Poke Me delivers more than just the seafood aspect of poke but an array of toppings to make it a great meal. For starters, I like the minimalist decor. It's almost easy to miss walking by as the new kid on the block, if it weren't for all the people shovelling down the goods. Walk up, order and wait for your name to be called. (Note: Only cards accepted - no cash!) The assembly line is more like a fresh deli, with big jars and bowls full of fresh veggies and proteins. You pay a set price depending on the protein you order - tofu starts at $12, chicken, salmon and kingfish are $14, tuna is $15. You follow the easy instructions above starting with the base - rice or salad, then protein, two long lists of toppings, and then your sauce. They have Korean rice, so yummy! Even their toppings go the extra mile with red pepper edamame, pickled cucumber with ginger, Kimchi, wasabi tobiko, two kinds of sesame, flavoured mushrooms, the list goes on. You can have it all! The portion size is extremely generous. I was super hungry and still could not finish it. Easy take away for a second meal! Fish quality was good for what could be called 'fast food.' Their sauces are spectacular too - traditional poke is shoyu style, but you can get two types of mayo, jalepeno, a total of five or six to choose or try a few. I'll definitely be back as this is the perfect summer food, leaving you feeling healthy and happy. :)

There was a nice selection of sushi, sashimi and hot dishes. See my pics of the menu! We tried the Sushi and sashimi special combination first. Everything was excellent. I also ordered some yellowtail nigiri and salmon. Service was prompt and friendly. It wasn't too busy when we were here but when we walked past later it was packed. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Will definitely be back next time am in town!

I think Kanpai is in a great location for the perfect balance. ~ Inside, its dimly lit, warm atmosphere is relaxing and the staff are welcoming and understanding. ~ The drinks come in big glasses, the food is well presented, and orders come out quickly. ~ The open kitchen style is nice, albeit not particularly unique, finding comforts in the more traditional teppanyaki-styled Japanese restaurants. The downside of this is that when the restaurant is busy, I imagine the kitchen sounds could get quite noisy for the seating environment. ~ The restaurant is open 'late' on some nights -- and they mean it more than other restaurants in the area. Kanpai was actually my second choice of places to try, however arriving at the first restaurant at 10.15pm on a Saturday night and finding it closed made me give Kanpai a try. On the Saturday night I was here, the kitchen closed at about 11pm. ~ Sadly, the entrees and mains did not come out at the same time. It's a little pet peeve of mine, but if I'm eating with someone else and my entree arrives ten minutes before theirs, I have the choice of either being rude and gobble it up without waiting for theirs to show, or allow it to go cold while waiting for my dining partner's dish. Overall, the food was tasty, the environment was quiet and clean, the experience was positive, and the staff were kind. I even had a laugh at the waiter who I witnessed using an array of chopsticks and sticky-tape to rescue a receipt that had fallen behind the fridge. A positive dining experience. I will be back.

The interior is nicely decorated, with a big outdoor terrace that overlooks the water. It was pretty chilly so we stayed inside, but one nice day it's definitely worth doing. There's an extensive sake list, and plenty of beer but I stuck with iced tea which changes regularly. Mine was a lemon rosemary which wasn't too sweet at all. For food, we started with edamame that came with a lovely spicy dipping sauce. That was followed by some skewered meat which they specialize in and you should definitely get - they're reasonably priced and a great accompaniment to drinks. Finally, we had a rainbow roll from their well curated sushi menu. My husband said it was some if the best sushi he's had recently - definitely very fresh. Service is friendly, and if you aren't inclined to dine in there is a dedicated take out area.

It's always fresh, and tasty and beautifully presented. In this regard, they didn't let us down. But the service was so incredibly bad. They clearly forgot someone's entree, and instead of just owning it and admitting it, there was every excuse under the sun and most didn't even seem plausible and varied from wait staff to wait staff. I'd rather just know for sure that something has been forgotten, so we have a realistic expectation of when to expect it. I just don't think they either cope when very busy, or their staff just need more training. Other than the bad service, I have to compliment them again on the food. Every dish was delicious and looked good too. My favourite was the Tuna Tataki (picture attached). Really, really good. Pricing is a teeny bit high, but I guess average considering Japanese food is a bit pricier than other cuisines. Parking isn't always great, so I like coming to the earlier seating so there's a better chance for a parking space. The decor is good, but the chairs a bit uncomfortable and heavy to move when adjusting yourself at the table. But overall, I think if the food at a restaurant is good enough, it sometimes outweighs some of the negatives.
