I was a student in the 70s. Edie and Jean were the best. Very encouraging and intuitive to student progress. So many great memories!

I feel very strongly to make sure anyone else basing decisions solely on these reviews know that this dojo is NOT ANTI GAY. I've stayed away from "traditional" martial arts because I have flexibility issues as well, but I saw people of all ages, sizes and fitness levels doing Krav Maga. The staff and instructors have always been supportive and helpful. If an instructor notices I'm having trouble doing a certain move, they are quick to suggest an alternative. For example, I can't kick quite high enough to reach someone's waist (yet), so they suggested I aim for the knee instead. I've never felt pressured to buy anything or sign up for a long term contract. I signed up for black-belt training because I wanted too, and I look forward to the challenge. I disagree with the"McDojo" comment. In my opinion promotions should a balance between proficiency and motivation. Remember, not everyone is a natural jock or an athlete. Does that mean the rest of us who are not should sit on the couch for our lives? If you only promote those who are the most proficient, the less proficient get frustrated and quit. As with most things, it seems like a bell curve with most falling toward the center, not a line in the sand. My limitations have taken me longer to get where I am, but I still got there with practice and support. I earned my rank with sweat, fatigue and determination. I am proud of it.

I guess that's how the owner Steve rolls. I haven't yet met a teacher who cares about his students as much as Steve. He is hands on and is a terrific and patient teacher. I think it's important to get some positive vibes going for this place because so many decisions (for better or worse) are made via Google searches and if you don't exist on social media one might as well be that tree that falls in the forest. Couldn't recommend this place more. And not just from a karate perspective. They are all about teaching the core values of self control, self discipline, respect for others. We are clearly huge fans. And so are all the other dozens of families who have been coming here for years.

After joining, I also started classes in Palace Hand, quickly realizing that both styles benefit one another and eventually even adding Karate to my repertoire to engage my mind and body. Sensei Branchaud and Sempai Kim have reputable credentials and are truly great teachers, constantly pushing their students to become better and improve their skills in every class. Here they offer Karate, Palace Hand, Sword, Weapons, and Zen Meditation classes straight from Okinawa, Japan. Kodokai is a great place to have fun and get into shape, or even just lose some pounds while gaining knowledge, respect, discipline, and self-defense against one or multiple attackers. I have definitely lost weight and have gotten into much better shape since I have started my training. When it comes to training you might expect the drill sergeant type of method that is common in most dojos offering monotonous routines, but it is not like that here. This is self-defense training not sport competition training. They offer self-defense classes for kids, teens, adults, and private lessons. All training is done among students from beginner to advanced ranks without limiting anyone's training in order to accommodate a lifelike scenario since no attacker is the same. I have gained skills that can be utilized to protect myself, friends, family, and possibly another person who is being attacked or needs a helping hand. My work schedule differed from my class schedule and they were able to work with me to create a schedule that would work for both of us. It is a relaxed environment with great people who are fun to learn with and are very open to welcoming new participants to our dojo. There is an extensive amount of knowledge that is taught here much more than I can explain. If you are looking for authentic martial arts offering practical training this is the first and last place you will need to check out. It might be hard to find at first but it is located on Eddie Dowling Highway in the Plaza at Park Square in the back of the building (across the Street from CVS).

From day one they call every student by their name. They work with every student on an individual level - challenging some, building confidence in others - knowing just what the student needs at that particular time. This dojo has taught my son so many things in just one year: coordination, confidence, self control, pride in accomplishments, how to accept criticism, how to win and lose, how to follow directions, how to stand up for oneself or others, patience, persistence, and flexibility, balance, and strength. They develop the whole person. He has had so much FUN learning those things. Martial arts has really become a part of our son's identity and a great source of pride for him. This is not a dojo out to take your money and do the minimum. They do not have contracts. You just pay as you go and it is worth every penney. This dojo has already had such a positive influence on our son's life! Just check it out! Update: My son has now been there over two years. We are still very happy with the personal care he gets. He has had so much fun training and competing in tournaments (and winning some, not others), learning martial arts forms, weapons, and discipline. He also loves playing dodgeball (with soft foam balls) and other games the senseis use to train the younger children. We love the drop off movie nights where the senseis watch the kids, have a movie night and have a pizza party while the parents go on a date! The kids love seeing their karate friends and senseis in street clothes! There are so many nice families here. I also love the convenience of running into Dave's for a few things while my son is training! Very convenient!
