Breakfast was a three course extravaganza of pastry, warm peaches and delicious eggs, all homemade. The location is perfect, as it's just a couple of blocks to the historic downtown. Beach front, the pool area is beautiful, and the staff here is compiled with some of the nicest people I have ever met in my lifetime. It's spotless and the wifi though not the best is enough to get by. You don't really need wifi on vacation anyway. You need to be out enjoying the beautiful area. There is a little grocery story down the block and like a 7/11 type store right across the road. The neighbors are all friendly and everyone was delightful. There are always a bunch of taxi drivers zooming down the road so it shouldn't be hard to get a ride somewhere. What I liked was that it isn't in the hotel zone. But not super far away. We were close enough to get to everything we wanted to do with a short taxi ride away but still far enough that we didn't have to see all the hoodlums that came out for memorial day weekend. We got a chance to relax and really enjoy Mexico without the crowds. I love this place and can't wait to return.

The innkeeper was kind and welcoming, but also gave us space...breakfast was plentiful--eggs, sausage, toast, and coffee. They do take special dietary requests, and asked us about that when we arrived... Our room (we stayed in the main house) was decorated with antiques and wonderful old quilts, and faced the iron wagon bridge spanning the Des Moines River...we walked back and forth across this bridge several times. Next to the inn are several interesting shops with varying hours of operation...the general store was fun to browse through, and sells awesome homemade fudge. We did not have an in-room refrigerator, and didn't expect one but would recommend bringing a small cooler if wanting to keep drinks or food cold for more than a few hours (I did notice a mini fridge in the dining room)....also, most of the toiletries are provided upon request only. The inn has a colorful past which was fun to read about. If wanting a peaceful and interesting getaway I'd highly recommend staying here!

I'm the one who doesn't want to sit around in a room but it's so cozy and relaxing here that I don't ever want to leave. My husband and I have traveled to Europe, been on cruises, and been all around the US. The food we receive at Amber House is better than anything we have had anywhere else in our travels. We brag to everyone and tell people they have to stay here! We enjoy speaking with the owners and hearing all their stories. The highlight of this trip (314/3-15, 2021) was the farewell committee headed by their youngest son who is just as friendly and caring as his parents. We can't wait to go back to Amber House. We know we will never be disappointed!!

There is also a balcony with tables chairs and grill. If you get the penthouse on the third floor you won't be disappointed! Huge full kitchen with amenities like the second floor Kitchen. Huge living area with comfy couches and large dining table. 2 bed rooms can sleep 4. The huge balcony with tables and chairs provides an amazing view of the Clark bridge and Mississippi River. This place is within walking distance of many great Alton eateries and shops. Also only a 16 minute drive to Grafton or Edwardsville for for entertainment. One drawback is the parking. No dedicated lot so it's only street parking. There are dedicated spaces out front and side parking is available too. Owner still charged me for one night. Nothing close to what you see online. Staircase is super steep, doors do not have secure locks and windows in old doors. Shag carpet and furniture at least 30 years old. Creepy. Disappointed as he knew I was traveling in from California, arriving after dark. I told him I was visiting my handicapped daughter who stairs would not be safe for. Mike told me it was beautiful loft called the love Joy. Nothing beautiful here.
