While the exterior of Feathers is undeniably gorgeous, the interior was shabby in places, the wall-to-wall carpeting was stained and overall there was a distinct smell of old steamed food. In fact, the atmosphere at the Feathers was so creepy that we checked out after an hour and went to another hotel.

This gives a comfortable and pleasant ambience. The food was excellent. Roast duck and lamb, with appropriate trimmings were excellent - perfectly cooked (5 stars). Parsnip and chestnut soup was divine (5). The Christmans pudding tart was also excellent and a slightly different take on the usual Christmas pudding. That is a major credit to the bar and staff here, as finding a good martini is something I am constantly attempting but also being continually disappointed by, especially in this region of the UK. My party and I came here for dinner in the Christmas season while in Shrewsbury. This was one of my favorite dinners in the whole of the Midlands, if not the supreme winner overall. Though on the pricier side, everything to the last detail was expertly crafted and delicious. Also, the service was lovely and inside the restaurant comfortable and festive- we enjoyed sitting next to a wood fire! It stayed relatively quiet for the duration of our meal as well, which was nice. We had three different entrees: I enjoyed the sirloin of steak and the other members of my party had the duck breast and the lamb. I tried their dishes and every single thing was marvelous. Unfortunately, we didn't get too many photos as we were all busy chowing down! My steak was cooked perfectly, tender, and flavorful. Each accompaniment also boasted such lovely qualities. For dessert I enjoyed the bread pudding which was absolutely delectable. If in the area you simply must try this lovely establishment for an exquisite dinner.

It has a large, beautifully maintained garden with views of Ludlow Castle and a local church. The garden abuts several green fields, in one of which cows graze. There is a small wooden table and chairs at which it is very pleasant to sit and relax and admire the wonderful view. My friends and I were served morning coffee there. It's all delightfully bucolic. The house itself is a large detached building, circa 1930. There are three spacious bedrooms. I stayed in The Lawrence, which is basically a suite of rooms - a bedroom, a bathroom and a separate toilet - with its own door. It was extremely comfortable, with all mod cons, eg a television and tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast, which is freshly cooked to order and delicious, is served in a room downstairs. The proprietors are very warm and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Prices are very reasonable - I paid £65 a night for sole occupancy of my suite of rooms. Whitfield House is excellent value for money. It's the best B&B establishment I have stayed at (and I've been to a fair few!). I recommend it unreservedly.

A gravelled drive leads you to the front of the house, which is surrounded by mature trees and we were greeted on arrival by the owner's friendly dog 'Rodney Rocket'! After a very welcome cup of tea and piece of cake, the owner talked us through some of the best places to visit or to eat in the area, like the Ludlow Food Centre and the Jolly Frog restaurant; both of which we tried and were well worthy of their recommendation. Our room, the 'Lawrence Room' was quite sizeable, with a separate toilet and bathroom, with a cavernous bath, and the sun-soaked main room, had a feeling of space and a comfortable king size bed. Of course, not forgetting the amazing views, over into the landscaped tiered garden, the rolling fields beyond and Ludlow Castle in the distance. A decent sized TV and a good selection of tea and coffee too. Breakfast was served in an equally impressive room, with wood panel walls and well spaced tables. A great variety of fruit, cereals and fruit juices to start, and then a great Full English Breakfast, making full use of local produce, one of the nicest I've had for some time; the scrambled eggs were particularly fine! The owners and staff were friendly and helpful, and the walk into the centre of Ludlow was just right, at about 10 minutes. Whitfield House is a such a peaceful and restful place to escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life; waking up to just the sound of the birds in the morning was fantastic.

Undergoing a massive revamp. They been redecorating the bedrooms and the function room…read more Redecorating doesn't describe it really as they have totally refurbished everything. New en suites in all the room, major structural work to the function room out the back. All very tidy, modern, tasteful and large! We went to a couple of Christmas functions there Xmas 2010 in the function room out the back. It's large, very large, not sure how many it can seat but I counted 160 seats and it looked a bit empty. Check out the cocktail bar upstairs it's epic, love it. Food: Not yet caught up with the new image they are trying to portray. I keep trying out their bar menu every few weeks. It's basic UK pub grub at standard prices. What I call plate cleaners... easy to eat all of it. Nothing to moan about. The guy who runs it has put some thought into employing very experienced staff in senior positions, they know their stuff. He has brought together a good team but the front of house workers, ie the bar staff, waitresses are as expected, they let the side down. This place is well on the way to becoming Newtown's Premier hotel to stay in. It's about time we had one.

This is part of the Acton Scott property, and is near the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm. This place was truly amazing. The rooms were all huge, and there was almost an equal ratio of bathrooms to bedrooms (many with en suite bathrooms). They do a great range of bar type food including staples like burgers and bangers and mash, whenever I have eaten there I have enjoyed it. Drinks are relatively cheap, especially given the location and the staff are pretty friendly too. Parking can be found both up and down the hill from the Tontine but you may have a few minutes walk, especially in the summer, as you will be competing with tourists for a spot.
