Prince Rupert Hotel

We had a very nice stay at the historic old Prince Rupert Hotel when in Shrewsbury…read more The hotel is very old and part of this old character is very evident. The place is rambling, with numerous hallways, sloping floors, and one very old wooden staircase, all of which is part of the charm of places lie this for me. Some rooms have a lot of old character, although others do not. The lobby area was modernised and is now somewhat bland, but it is still nice, attractive, and comfortable. The rooms were comfortable and our room still had some old exposed beams, but otherwise was modernised, mostly in a somewhat bland style, but still nice and it was pretty large with a good bathroom and fixtures. Staff were nice, a glass of port was provided on checking in. Breakfast was in the lovely dining hall and including continental buffet plus a very good cooked breakfast/full English. The location is excellent, in the heart of the old town a short walk from everything, but on a quiet street. We had a nice view onto characterful old Fish Street from our room.

Not here. The room was spacious with a huge separate bathroom which contained a jacuzzi bath and a separate shower. These are hard to find in the UK unless you are willing to pay well above $300 a night. The staff was very attentive and also very helpful in providing insight into local restaurants. Given the choice, I'd stay here again without a second thought.

The place is a lovely old building, modernised and updated but in a manner that is both stylish ad sensitive to the building's character, leaving much of the old charm with exposed wooden beams, stonework, and old fireplace. This gives a comfortable and pleasant ambience. The food was excellent. Roast duck and lamb, with appropriate trimmings were excellent - perfectly cooked (5 stars). Parsnip and chestnut soup was divine (5). The Christmans pudding tart was also excellent and a slightly different take on the usual Christmas pudding. We had outstanding local cask ales in excellent condition, as well as cocktails.
I would stop by Shrewsbury just to eat here again. What gorgeous food and drink!…read more This is the only place in the Midlands that I've had such a stunning and authentic martini to date. That is a major credit to the bar and staff here, as finding a good martini is something I am constantly attempting but also being continually disappointed by, especially in this region of the UK. My party and I came here for dinner in the Christmas season while in Shrewsbury. This was one of my favorite dinners in the whole of the Midlands, if not the supreme winner overall. Though on the pricier side, everything to the last detail was expertly crafted and delicious. Also, the service was lovely and inside the restaurant comfortable and festive- we enjoyed sitting next to a wood fire! It stayed relatively quiet for the duration of our meal as well, which was nice. We had three different entrees: I enjoyed the sirloin of steak and the other members of my party had the duck breast and the lamb. I tried their dishes and every single thing was marvelous. Unfortunately, we didn't get too many photos as we were all busy chowing down! My steak was cooked perfectly, tender, and flavorful. Each accompaniment also boasted such lovely qualities. For dessert I enjoyed the bread pudding which was absolutely delectable. If in the area you simply must try this lovely establishment for an exquisite dinner.

We were just here to drink (£6.50 for a gin and tonic, not cheap, but not the worst that I have suffered, very standard prices on cocktails), 13 of us, avoiding the eyes of the creepy man in the most amazing shirt (he had ready-to-kill-you stare, and undid another button trying to gain attention with soulless peepers boring in to butts). Even though one of the clientele was a bit tasteless, it was a pleasant crowd, with lovely staff and gold toned cosy lighting that warms you right up. I'd really like to come back here for food.
Lord Hill Hotel & Restaurant

I didn't stay here but we did use the restaurant to cater us lunch after my Grandfather's funeral…read more The Crematorium where his funeral was held recommended Lord Hill to us and was reasonably close by so that driving after the funeral wasn't much of a problem. We had requested food for 25 people and they provided sandwiches and other finger food as well as served tea and coffee which was great, but the room provided for us definitely wouldn't have sat 25 people - luckily only about 15 people attended the after services. The bartender was friendly enough although a bit unskilled at her craft and had some problems recommending replacement items when some of us requested specific beers etc.
Yep, it's alright here. Was here last week for my Aunt's wedding and they really looked after us…read more The whole wedding was here so we kept them pretty busy but everything was perfect. I was also shocked that once you go out of London, even posh hotels don't charge the earth for a beer. The staff are lovely. The garden's are perfect for the photos and the staff are really pleased to be part of the wedding which is nice. Perfect wedding venue.

Not a bad hotel really for on the cheap, but I paid for the upgrade Internet and I'll tell you this…read more- hotels need to know - just make Internet work. Don't make some elaborate scheme, so you can make a few extra bucks, that knocks the customer off every 10 minutes and customers have to log back in etc. etc. So annoying. Every time I would close either my iPad or phone and re-open it I would have to log back in, and I use it for my work - it would knock me off line in the middle of live streaming etc. Great, so glad I paid £5 for this. In a nutshell- We already paid for the room. Just have good internet, and make it work, and make it easy.

Arriving in Shrewsbury on a Sunday evening is an odd thing as most places are closed. We managed to…read moreescape eating at Ask (which was packed), purely because a drunk informed us about Cromwells. Honest! A hotel/bar/pub/restaurant with a really nice atmosphere, great friendly staff and a wonderful menu. This place was a real find. The menu was varied and suited all our tastes (including the vegetarian in the group). My stater was a parmesan topped pancake stuffed with Shropshire blue cheese and mushrooms - it's sounds simple but it was delicious and very tasty. Main was a Sunday roast - a very upmarket one. The meat was fantastically tender and simply melted in the mouth. My Crème Brûlée dessert was aborted as the chef's blow torch blew up. I was disappointed (as it's a particular favourite of mine). The staff were very attentive though and offered me an orange chocolate torte was a substitute. To be honest I only ordered dessert as I fancied the Crème Brûlée but decided to opt for the torte. I didn't expect two portions on my plate (as an apology for the problems with my original choice). I struggled a bit to finish but finish I did! We decided to have some wine and after deliberating were told our choice of a white Rioja was not possible as it had been removed from the menu. Apparently other customers had commented it wasn't up to scratch so it was removed. We had a lovely wine which was recommended by the bar staff and the crisp notes sat perfectly against the pepper in the gravy/beef. If we had known about Cromwells before we would have gone sooner and possibly stayed there as the staff and the food really were top notch. A must visit for anyone finding themselves tired or peckish in Shrewsbury!

Then the best thing happened our tow truck driver took us to this hotel and it saved the day. My five kids were tired hadn't eaten and the hotel restaurant was closing in 3 minutes. We must have looked like we needed help they were so gracious, they ran to the kitchen and made us an incredible meal. They walked us to our rooms and showed us around, and were the nicest hotel staff I have ever encountered. My family was literally thanking me for breaking down. If you are near Shrewsbury and can stay here do it. The grounds and black swan swimming in the pond are beautiful, the rooms are nice and clean, the rates are very reasonable and more than anything the staff is incredible.
