The marker reads, "John Deere was born February, 7th, 1804 the third son of William Rinold Deere and Sarah Yates Deere. It is presumed that Sarah gave birth to John at home; over William Deere's Rutland tailor shop located on the east side of Main St. across from the park. In 1805, the family moved to Middlebury, Vermont where at the age of 17, he learned the blacksmith trade as an apprentice. When hard times hit the region in the 1830s, Deere decided to leave his wife and family temporarily and venture west. In 1836 Deere moved to Grand Detour, Illinois where, in 1837 he built the world's first steel moldboard plow - "The Plow that Tamed The West"." The marker was erected in 2012 by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation. The sign is in near mint condition. There is parking nearby at a convenience store. The North Main Street Cemetery, which was established in the 1780s, was superseded by this city cemetery. After the Evergreen Cemetery was built in 1861, West Street Cemetery saw a decline in burials and eventually ceased to be used by the end of the 19th century. Many burials were eventually moved to Evergreen Cemetery. Veterans of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, and Vermont's fourth governor are interred among the more than 600 graves. Perhaps the most noteworthy person interred here is Governor Smith who served as US Congressman, US Senator and Vermont's Fourth Governor. He was elected to represent Vermont's 1st District in the US House of Representatives, serving from 1791 to 1797 and 1801 to 1803. He was then elected as a Senator from Vermont to the US Senate, serving from 1803 to 1807. Finally, he served as Vermont's Governor from 1807 to 1808. The cemetery is in excellent condition. The castle was so cool and has so many unique and rare antiques. The tour guides were so knowledgeable about the history, building techniques, and all of the antiques and art work in the castle. The castle has a beautiful marble deck outside over looking the green mountains and it was a perfect way to end out the tour. I would highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area!

I am not sure I will ever return; I am an avid live music aficionado and have seen 100's of shows all around New England and NY. The seating is so close - if they had just reduced the seats by 2 or 3 per row if would be so much better. I had a germ factory sit next to me - he actually had a cup that he kept hawking into during the show. I wish I was kidding or exaggerating but I am not. Absolutely gross. The usher seated him; not sure how she missed that the man was unfit to be in a public space and why he was not refused entry? Or seated in a less densely occupied space? So much for enjoying Lyle Lovett and John Hyiatt - I spent close to 400$ and drove over 200 miles to rub elbows with this filthy cretin. The Gorham Covered Bridge carries Gorham Bridge Road across Otter Creek in a rural area of…read morePittsford and Proctor, Vermont. It is a single span, 114-foot long Town lattice truss that is supported by concrete-faced stone abutments. Under the 18 foot broad road deck, laminated beams have been added to strengthen the bridge. One of Vermont's oldest remaining covered bridges, the bridge dates to 1841. Together with Nicholas M. Powers, who was at the time Owen's apprentice, Abraham Owen constructed it. One of the most well-known bridge builders of the 19th century, Vermont native Powers is recognized with building a significant number of covered bridges. It was one of three still standing Vermont bridges that were known to have been constructed by Powers at the time this bridge was added to the National Register in 1974. Because the bridge has a clearance and a weight limit posted, both of which my van is well under, I opted to cross and did so with no issues. It is a lovely bridge and worth visiting! Nice station that is very easy to find…read more My concern was parking. I was traveling to Lancaster, PA for five nights and there is no signage at the site or online about parking. Amtrak usually provides parking...otherwise what would be the point. I parked my car left it and hoped all went well. It did and feel confident to do so again. The reason for the FOUR stars is the lack of signage about parking. It was free but a tow truck would not. The station and the City of Rutland needs to clarify this for users of Am

Info overload on a self-guided treasure hunt…read more The museum is just off the road a really sharp turn off that goes over a steel mini bridge. Slow down as you approach it. The building has seen better days, both inside and out. If you're a Norman Rockwell fan this has an unimaginable collection of his works, including a souvenir area that has reproductions, plates with his drawings, and another room with even more of his works! Your tour beings right after you enter on your immediate right and is set up in chronological order from his earliest years to later in life. You work your way around a large room and there are works in the middle of the room as well. Amazing how many pieces he created in the span of his life. I believe the location has about 2,000 pieces of his works on display. In every section, there is one index card pointing out a factoid. From the looks of it and the fact the text on the faded yellowing index card it looks with the type that appears to be created on a manual typewriter in serif fonts, this stuff is certainly due for an upgrade. The text could be larger, have more contrast, and passages in some cases shorter with more descriptions throughout the displays. At $7.50 per adult, you go through this space in perhaps 30 minutes. It does not appear to be ADA compliant. No restroom. Dirt or gravel parking lot out front and to the right of the building. There is another museum in the Arlinglington area where Norman lived for a bit and visited with Grandma Mosses. It is much smaller, is free, and provides a better layout although just as dilapidated. So, if you are a Norman Rockwell fan and you're near Rutland it may be worth the peek. There is so much to take in you really have to pick and choose which ones you want to zoom in on. Unfortunately, the only way you would pick is visual vs content because there just isn't a whole lot of easy quick to read nuggets throughout. Enjoy! Carson
