Wilson Castle. Bricks don't do well in Vermont weather.

It's just odd to travel a mile up a winding country road in rural Vermont to this enormous brick castle. Doctor John Johnson constructed the structure in 1867 in an effort to impress his bride, an unidentified English nobleman. The narrative goes that Johnson met her while studying medicine in the United Kingdom. The castle's completion cost $1.3 million and eight years. After barely three years of living in the castle with her husband, Mrs. Johnson left for England. Her husband had to sell the castle after she passed away. The castle is a peculiar mixture of 19th-century architectural styles including Dutch Neo-Renaissance, Scottish baronial, Queen Anne, and Romanesque Revival. It consists of 32 rooms, 84 stained glass windows, and 13 fireplaces. There are bunches of videos and a very helpful staff who are proud of the heritage of the building. Interesting things to see in each room and while there are minimal barriers, try not to touch stuff so that it lasts for future generations. The building is not handicapped accessible. I'm so glad we decided to stop here! It's currently under renovation, and I do hope to see it again once it's completed - until then I'll settle for following their progress on social media! It has such beautiful features, and I really enjoyed getting to look around. The stained glass alone is worth making the trip here! There are so many beautiful windows and lamps. The fireplaces are also magnificent! There are multiple statues on the grounds which are quite impressive as well. The people who own and work here are clearly passionate about this place and the history of Wilson Castle! Their passion is clear in how much effort they're putting into maintaining and restoring the castle. It is also a great opportunity to look into the past!

Amazing and very old authentic Castle. Worth the price of admission!

You'd think you're in a spooky haunted house, but it's a bona fide castle, pretty much preserved for about a century, give or take. If you're lucky, your tour guide will be a member of the family! Inside is dark and musty-smelling, but you can go into the rooms, not stand behind a velvet rope. You can touch the artifacts. You watch a DVD first, then take the tour. It's marvelous; furniture from several decades ago, hand-carved imported wood, exquisite stained glass windows, and more. This place should be a national landmark and taken over by a non-profit. It's a treasure!

What an amazing old gem! Spectacular architecture. I could use a bit of upkeep, but I'm sure the costs astronomical. I went with my little kids, so we didn't do the tour but my understanding is, if you're into paranormal activity this is the place to come!

My sister and I love taking pictures in old creepy authentic historic places. This manor is an incredible combination of all those things. But we appreciated most was how you can see the disrepair and the decay happening all around you, and that gives it a sense of realism. All the furniture there is original to the owners of the homes including back to the builders of the homes. It is simply history being preserved as Time wear is away at it. Sheila was our guide for part of the tour, and she was the most down to earth, approachable, and helpful to her guide I've come across. My sister and I took tons of photos and the natural lighting in the bedrooms is truly magical. Even smells like an authentic old building. Well worth the admission price.

Norman Rockwell Museum of Vermont - Norman's works around the room in chrono order

Info overload on a self-guided treasure hunt…read more The museum is just off the road a really sharp turn off that goes over a steel mini bridge. Slow down as you approach it. The building has seen better days, both inside and out. If you're a Norman Rockwell fan this has an unimaginable collection of his works, including a souvenir area that has reproductions, plates with his drawings, and another room with even more of his works! Your tour beings right after you enter on your immediate right and is set up in chronological order from his earliest years to later in life. You work your way around a large room and there are works in the middle of the room as well. Amazing how many pieces he created in the span of his life. I believe the location has about 2,000 pieces of his works on display. In every section, there is one index card pointing out a factoid. From the looks of it and the fact the text on the faded yellowing index card it looks with the type that appears to be created on a manual typewriter in serif fonts, this stuff is certainly due for an upgrade. The text could be larger, have more contrast, and passages in some cases shorter with more descriptions throughout the displays. At $7.50 per adult, you go through this space in perhaps 30 minutes. It does not appear to be ADA compliant. No restroom. Dirt or gravel parking lot out front and to the right of the building. There is another museum in the Arlinglington area where Norman lived for a bit and visited with Grandma Mosses. It is much smaller, is free, and provides a better layout although just as dilapidated. So, if you are a Norman Rockwell fan and you're near Rutland it may be worth the peek. There is so much to take in you really have to pick and choose which ones you want to zoom in on. Unfortunately, the only way you would pick is visual vs content because there just isn't a whole lot of easy quick to read nuggets throughout. Enjoy! Carson

The area that they set up is outside the track area and covers two buildings. The track is nice, other than that there is fair amount of parking but overall driving around the location (that wasn't included as part of the show) there is a lot of areas of open barns and fencing in disrepair. Its hard to judge a location like this because of the many different things they host but i would say for the vintage shows we do, they do a great job.

Unfortunately, I left the fair yesterday feeling sorry for the vendors. Perhaps it's busier in the evenings, but it was strangely quiet during this particular hot summer Saturday afternoon. There are your typical rides, food vendors (fried dough, burgers, hoagies, ice cream, cotton candy....etc.) along with the various carnie rides and games. Only a few rides were actually running. There are several barns with animals and a nice showing of 4H kids. Still...the layout was somewhat disjointed and again...it was surprising how sparsely attended it was. My favorite spots were: -Maple House (syrup, maple candies freshly made onsite, ice cream...etc..and the smell is out of this world) -Horse barn (way in the back behind the other, smaller barns) -Historical barns (some cool stuff in there) -4H display/barn Not sure what the organizers need to do to increase attendance, but they should definitely look at the flow/layout....along with how many days the fair is open. The vendors let us know that it went from Tuesday through Saturday. Even though it's summer, it doesn't give a full weekend of the fair for the vendors to get the kind of traffic that they need.
