Tonopah Cemetery - Entrance to the Tonopah Cemetery 1

I never thought I'd make a point to visit a cemetery on a road trip but here I am and I have to say…read moreI really enjoyed the visit to the Tonopah Cemetery. The graves are pretty rough due to their age. Pretty bare in terms of headstones as well, and in a way very grim, but I guess dying isn't lavish. The deaths; a lot of them, are very sad and tragic: children dying at childbirth, illnesses, murder, and more. The cemetery is located next to the Clown Motel so you get a two for one in terms of tourist spots. It's free so worth a stop If you Google the cemetery you can find more information on some of the dead. It's eerie. It's a bit creepy, but it is still 100% respectful to visit this folks who have died long before us.

The original one is next to the Clown Motel - aka Old Tonopah Cemetery. In 1911 the deathrate was was so high and the original cemetery kept being overwashed by tailings from the Mine Extension, destroying graves and headstones. So they needed a new space to lay those of the town to rest. The Tonopah Mine Extension donated the land to prevent the cemetery from expanding. A US Congressman by the name of Alexander Hardy is interred here as of 1927. Currently there are 2779 memorials. Would def recommend if your into history and learning how other towns and places of the past run things. It is free. Plots are still available for a reasonable price, offering many different burial options. Location is Veterans Memorial HWY/ Radar Rd - ample parking

Goldfield Cemetery - Don't eat library paste folks!

You will be amazed at how some people unfortunately died. The original cemetery was in the middle of town. As they built the once luxurious Goldfield Hotel right next to it, the residents of Goldfield did not want visitors stepping off the train only to walk across the cemetery to get to their hotel. So it was relocated to the outskirts of town about a mile away in 1908 as soon as the hotel construction was finished. As I mentioned earlier, if you take your time and skim over some of the grave site markings, you will be astonished as to how some of these unfortunate souls perished. People here have died from murder, accidental gun shots, stabbings, accidents stemming from mine disasters, and various diseases like diptheria, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. The most famous one has to be the "Unknown man who died from eating library paste". I know I couldnt believe it either that this old town had a library back in the day. Lol. But seriously folks, I dont think you will ever see any other grave stone with the cause of death from that. In closing, as with any other cemetery please treat it as sacred property and have full respect for those that are resting here. Yelp 2020 Review #36 832 overall

Formally the founder of a Paranormal Research team out in Vegas it's always been a fascination of mine. We were already in Goldfield to visit the Goldfield Hotel when we decided to stop off at the cemetery here. I didn't feel anything odd but it was a very humbling and interesting place to visit. Many people buried there were taken too soon by diphtheria and pneumonia. Some of the graves show what the person died from and some are unmarked without so much as a name. You can actually look up a few of their stories if you go to http://www.goldfieldhistoricalsociety.com/featured-storyGoldfieldCemeteryStories.html As always please be respectful when visiting cemeteries or graveyards.
